Forum Republic Binding Review

republic-dark-magic
$199
Intermediate to Expert Freestyle to All Mountain.
The Forum Republic is the most aggressive binding in Fourums line and makes for a binding that will work with more than just a freestyle board.   For 2011 the Republic has a completely overhauled baseplate for  the new cool tech that allows a much better flex under foot similar to the Burton Prophecy. The Republic has a base plate that has almost everything hollowed out to allow the board to flex in a more natural way and it makes every board butter better.  It also has a similar disc to what Burton introduced this year with the Burton Prophecy and Burton Co2 For 2012 Forum added a canting system to the binding which is a softer foam to make it easier to lean into the board.  It makes riding easier on your ankles, knees and hips while also making it easier to ride.  We like this tech and feel this is a solid follow up upgrade after so many upgrades in 2011. Forum makes freestyle gear but this hits a wider scope of riders and isn't bad if you are looking for a mid flexing all mountian binding.  The price is right also.  So if you like the Tech that Burton and Forum offer in their high end bindings but dont want to pay the high price then the Republic will be a good call.

The Good Ride Take

A quick look at the 2012 Forum Republic

A Good Ride Take on Binding Tech

Metal vs Plastic Bindings

This is a Goodride breakdown for all you that are having a tough time choosing your bindings and what to make of the material you are looking at.  Most bindings are Metal, Plastic or some combo of the 2.

Metal Bindings have a lot of great aspects.  Almost all-metal bindings are made from aluminum.  Aluminum is great when it come to weight to stiffness ratio and also pretty durable.  There is one key issue with metal/aluminum bindings; they transfer all the vibrations from the board right into your feet.  This is the same principle that pelage “bass-less” bindings, your feet got totally tired or fatigued.  The newer generations have much better/damp bases so this problem has been minimized and in some cases eliminated.   There are some companies that make great bindings despite the vibration issue with Aluminum.   Some that come to mind are Ride and Rome.

Plastic Bindings also have many great features but let’s address some technical stuff first.  Most plastic bindings are really hardened glass plastic mix.   The high-end stuff tends to have a more carbon, and carbon fiber added for extra stiffness and weight savings.  Plastic bindings really dominate the market right now and most top bindings these days are mostly or all plastic.  They can be really stiff and react well to your commands.   The new bindings finally dialed in the carbon/ fiber integration to the point that the bindings will perform with the stiffness of metal and absorb more chatter.  Most industry leaders have limited or completely eliminated metal from their bindings and we feel that with the materials used right now this is the future.  Some mostly plastic companies that we feel rock are Burton, Flux and Union.

What kind of binding should you buy?  It’s a tough call.  Both Plastic and Metal bindings offer freestyle, freeride and all mountain styles.  At this point we feel that plastic bindings are edging out metal bindings when it comes to the very high end $300+ category.  However it is a tough call in the below $300 category as to which material has the advantage.

Feel It

$199.95
The Foretelling of Freestyle

John Jackson and Pat Moore have conjured up violent spirits to guide them into the future of freestyle snowboarding. Acting as their medium, the Republic evokes these spirits from a history of powerful yet flexible bindings. Dark graphics done by infamous rock-and-roll band The Bronx, as well as NEW Simmer Down Canting and the Good Vibes Hinge Disk, settle these violent spirits, channeling them into a nearly occult-like paranormal freestyle experience.

Feel It

The Good Vibes are spreading and it feels natural. Featuring mind-altering and award winning new levels of board feel with the free-flexing Hinge Disk and the Split Baseplate. Good Vibes allow the board to flex naturally underfoot, heightening board feel and control and taking full advantage of continuous rocker. Let your toes marinate into dampening comfort with the full-length adjustable EVA pad so only the good vibes get through even on flat landings. Now available on the Republic and the award-winning Shaka.

Good Vibes Hinge Disk

Providing increased board feel and control, the Hinge Disk utilizes two separate pieces that operate independently, allowing the binding to flex underfoot. Updated for 2011 with nose-to-tail stance-width adjustment.

SIMMER DOWN

The medial (inside) section of the pad is engineered with a softer EVA that is easier to compress than the firm lateral (outside) section. This difference allows the pad to cant naturally based on the amount of pressure delivered from the boot. The natural canting self adjusts to every stance position, providing a custom fit that lets every rider enjoy the benefits of a more comfortable stance position, powerful ollies, and full-foot cushioning.

Good Vibes EVA Footpad

An adjustable full-length pad that protects riders from heavy impacts and minimizes chatter, while still allowing precise board feel and control.

NICE!

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful
Just came in from a full day with a new set of Forum Republic bindings. I ran them on a 153cm DC PBJ (Screech Owl).

First of all, the range of adjustability is pretty unreal. I was able to tweak these suckers just right... My size 11.5 boots fit the size large bindings just perfect. Toe and heel drag was minimized with minor adjustments

The hinged disc is a good thing. You wouldn't think it's that big of a deal - but a couple good presses with these, and you will FEEL the difference. Allowing the board to flex UNDER your bindings is a GOOD thing!

The footbeds on these bindings are unreal. Super cushy, absorbing TONS of vibration. I cant say enough good things about these footbeds. You really gotta try them.

The highbacks were plenty stiff for aggressive carving, but forgiving enough to allow lots of fun in the park.

The ankle straps are very comfortable, with enough adjustment to accomodate a good range of boot sizes. The toe cap straps stayed where they belonged... Much better than my Cartels and Missions. I prefer the Forum toe caps over the Burtons!

All in all, I am stoked about these bindings... I'd like to run them on some of my other boards!
