Beginner to Expert All Mountain Freestyle

Hybrid Camber Twin Shape
The YES Jacpot is the YES The Typo from 2011 combined with the Jones All Mountain Twin.  The Jackpot has the Ultimate Traction or mellow magnetraction of the Jones All Mountain Twin and the shape/flex of the Typo.  The Jackpot also has a much faster base than the Typo. We loved the Yes Basic and the Jackpot is a great board too.  It's very loose and jib friendly but still has a bite when it comes to staying on a rail and carving out a turn. We had a lot of fun on this board and felt it's one of the better boards you can get in this price range.   Check out the more detailed review below.

The Yes Jackpot is a new board for 2012 and is a pretty interesting ride.  We felt this to be almost the same board as the YES basic but with the new ultimate traction side cut that the Jones All Mountain Twin has and a faster base like the Optimistic has.  These 3 boards are very similar and all three are well liked at The Good Ride.

A Quick Look at the YES Jackpot

Groomers- The Jackpot is a pretty good all conditions ride and can handle just about any groomer you will encounter.  It's a little too loose to be an excellent groomer board but if you like to make good turns for a bit and then jib around on natural terrain this could be perfect.  The hard pack day we had showed that it's pretty loose but not squirrely.  It was also easy one footing off the chair.

Powder- The YES Jackpot is a really fun board for a twin with a centered stance. The hybrid camber is only a milimeter or 2 and the rocker is pretty pronounced so it rides in powder as good or better then a flat rocker board.  It planes well and doesn't want to sink.  You will still have to put a lot of work on your back leg especially if you want to take a freestyle centered stance approach to the powder.

Turn Initation- The Jackpot can turn very very easy and like the The Basic would be good for just about any level rider.  It's pretty loose between the feet for a hybrid camber snowboard and almost feels as catch free as a hybrid rocker board without the squirrely feel you get flatbasing on hard pack or one footing.  If you make short or wide turns the Jackpot will be predictable and easy.  The Ultimate Traction also gives this a little more grip and therefore stability in the turn so this is a good choice for anyone who wants an easy ride off the chair, an easy turning board and something stable when you have to flat base.  Even if you are an expert you will appreciate the ride this offers.

Speed- The Jackpot is a soft board but it has a fast base. It can handle moderate speeps and is good for a board that can jib like this.  It's a very ballanced ride and accelerates quickly when it comes to picking up speed quickly in the park.
Weight-This is right in the middle and doesn't bother your foot on the chair.

Edge Hold- We liked how this held in just about any condition you want to ride.  It held well in the pipe, on hard pack and we think it will do pretty well when it comes to east coast ice but there might be better boards out there.  We have to say this wasn't as grippy as the Yes Yes The Great Women and Great Dudes of History but better than the The Basic. We do like that the edges can be tuned a lot easier than the chain saw like Ultimate Grip in with the Great Dudes/Women.

Flex- This is a pretty soft board it was smooth when it comes to buttering around the mountain or hitting the jib park.  It's not a noodle but it's pretty soft in the tip and tail.

Carving- We were able to make a pretty serious carve without washing out and love hybrid camber for this.  It does really well for a board of this flex but it's not going to blow your carving mind. We'd say that this does well for a mostly rocker board.

Switch- Its a true twin so it's perfect switch.

Rails/Jibbing- The camber between the feet on this board is not very high.  It's almost like it's flat so combine that with the soft flex you have a really good rail and jib board.   It almost feels like a flat/rocker board when sliding across a rail or box.  We had a lot of fun in the park with this.  The Ultimate Traction does not change the ride when it comes to the jib park.

Pipe- Usually a pipe board and a jib park board don't do well together but the Jackpot was pretty fun in the pipe.  The edges weren't tainted from too much jib park play so it still held an edge well in the pipe.

Jumps- This is a pretty springy board when it came to generating your own air.  It felt just like the basic.  In the park or out of the park you will have a good time on the Jackpot.

All in all we were really impressed with the Jackpots performance in and out of the park. Like the Basic this rides better than many $500 boards we tried and really makes for a good do anything board. If you can afford the Jackpot we feel it will be a better choice over the Basic but both are really good boards.

The Good Ride Take On YES Snowboards- Yes has been around now for a few years and has established itself as one of the better hybrid camber snowboards in the US.  We are big fans of hybrid camber because it’s stable between the feet, has good edge hold and is very floaty in powder.  The guys who designed these boards are from Burton and they had Nidecker make the boards.  Nidecker has been around since 1984 and has an amazing reputation in Europe.  They just haven’t found a way to correctly market themselves in the US which is a shame because they make great boards.  YES did have some cosmetic issues with their boards but most of that is behind them now. Our biggest complaint is that we’d like to see Women’s boards and Wide boards from YES as well.   Almost every board from YES is well thought out and usually won’t disappoint.

The Good Ride Take on Hybrid Camber
For the most part there are two types of hybrid camber that we see out there these days.

1. Mostly Rocker Hybrid Camber
This type of ride, like many boards, has camber and rocker but unlike other rockered boards the center has a mini camber. This is usually 1-3mm high, sits only between the bindings and then curves up right after. From a distance this board looks like a rocker board but when you look closer you see the little camber between the feet. This is not as loose as hybrid rocker but it’s very close. It is very stable between the feet and easy to one foot or flat base in any condition out there. Mostly Rocker Hybrid Camber is very versatile. You will see this design on anything from Freestyle to Freeride style snowboards. This will work well with all ability levels and riding styles.

2 Mostly Camber Hybrid Camber
There are all types of designs but this type usually looks like a Camber board and rides much closer to an old school Camber board.  ONe thing you will notice is usually when you step on the board the tip and tail rise up a lot more than a normal camber board will.  Some are mostly camber and others have a bit more rocker but you will always notice they have camber.  This allows for a stable, fast carve friendly feeling you get with camber but also makes it more catch free and floaty in powder.  This doesn't float effortlessly like hybrid rocker, mostly rocker hybrid camber or flat to rocker but it does better than camber.  You will mainly see this on aggressive freestyle to all mountain to freeride style snowboards.

YES. Jackpot

To clarify this review slightly, the board is a similar shape to the typo/basic. YEs has not only added a similar version of the mellow mag called ultimate traction, but also a slightly lower profile rocker and the free flex tip and tail. Free flex is achieved by shortening the length of the wood core in the tip and tail in addition to removing the ABS sidewall material past the contact point. This is all done to achieve a lower swing weight, more ideal for spinning of jumps, but also to make the tip and tail more playful. Truly the all-around park killer!!

Enjoy!
