A good ride favorite!

Canted footbed for 2012
You see the Burton Cartel bindings everywhere and they might be the most purchased binding in the history of snowboarding and there is a reason for this.  It doesn't mean that the Cartel will be the best binding for you but it usually makes the most people happy out of any binding every year.  Park or Mountain, soft or medium flexing boards, the Cartel should blend in and do a good job giving you a smooth and predictable ride.

Check out the detailed review below and the comparison between the 2012, 2011, 2010 Burton Cartel, Burton Cartel Re:Flex and Burton Cartel EST bindings.

The Good Ride Take

Burton Cartel and Cartel EST Snowboard Binding Review by The Good Ride
Burton Cartel Disc vs. Burton Cartel EST vs. Burton Cartel Re:flex vs. Burton Cartel Restricted EST vs. Burton Cartel Restricted Re:Flex.

Day's Riden- more than we can count
Bindings Tried-  All of them
Boards Tested-
Lib Tech Jamie Lynn Phoenix,   Burton Custom,  Gnu C2 BTX Billy Goat, Jones All Mountain Twin, Never Summer Proto, Rome Agent Rocker, Rome Postermania, Rossignol Onemagtek, Rossignol Taipan, Yes Big City, and many many more boards.

The Cartel is a very smooth predictable binding that everyone knows about and more people have used this binding than probably any other binding. We don't know why we are doing a review on the most popular binding out there but if you know these bindings then at least you will have something to compare our other reviews to.  We have had Cartels for as long as we can remember in our line up.  Here is our Take on all the different bindings that are in the 2010 to 2012 lines.

Here is a breakdown of the different Burton Cartel bindings out there right now.

2010 Burton Cartel Line
There are two main models.  Burton Cartel EST and the Burton Cartel Disc Binding.  The EST haas more natural flex under foot but the Disc fits all boards.
2011 Burton Cartel Line

There are 5 Models.   Burton Cartel EST, Restricted Cartel EST, Burton Cartel Re:Flex, Cartel Disc and Cartel Restricted.  There are 2 common changes for the better over the 2011. For 2011 they added the high back from the now discontinued long running well liked Burton P1 and gave the old high back from 2010 to the Burton Mission line.  The Cartel also has an small but asymmetrical ankle strap to allow alot of lateral movement with your board and a far better toe strap over the 2010. The Cartel EST is pretty much the same as the 2010 cartel EST.  The Cartel Re:Flex has a new base that allows more flex underfoot similar to the Cartel EST and it works for all boards (our choice for 2011).  Then there is the cartel disc binding that just has the new straps and high back to differentiate it over the 2010. Both Restricted models are only different in the Anke strap.  They have a large asymmetrical ankle strap that makes for a more supportive/responsive freestyle and all mountian ride.  If you can find the Restricted in EST or Regular they are probably the call.  It's a toss up with the Restricted Disc vs. the Cartel Re:Flex.  The ankle strap from the Restricted is the strong point but so is the new re:flex technology on the Cartel Re:Flex.

2012 Burton Cartel Line

Again there were some big changes to all the cartel line with a new high back that is a softer version of the discontinued 2011 C60 High back and there is a new base plate (est is different). We like this new design and feel it gives a little more response and feel than the 2011 models. The 2011 Disc Cartel is discontinued and there are 4 types of bindings.  The 2012 Cartel EST has the new high back and base plate but is still pretty much a similar ride.  The 2012 Restricted EST is the same as the 2012 Cartel EST except for a much larger and better ankle strap.  If you want EST then this is the call over the 2 EST's. The 2012 Cartel Re:Flex has a new base plate and new high back but still has a pretty similar feel and ride to the 2011. The best choice to us is the 2012 Cartel Restricted Re:Flex binding because it flexes underfoot similar to the EST bindings, can ride every board and has a much more supportive ankle strap that will provide more support and leverage. Because of the ankle strap we feel it has better overall performance than the Cartel EST bindings. We'd like to see the restricted and re:flex to be just one binding. Overall every 2012 Cartel binding is better than the previous models but you can still get a good ride out of the older ones if you can't spring the cash out for the latest and greatest.

The Good Ride take on the Burton Cartel EST Bindings

1.  We love the 100% shock absorbent foot pad that runs entirely across the board.  We also like that it comes in different types of thickness.  It also has a good flex under foot that makes the entire board flex better than a traditional binding.
2.  The 2 screw channel system also allows the board to flex more naturally and creates much easier turn initiation than the standard 4 or 3 hole bindings.  Also the longitudinal flex is exceptional.
3.  We like how easy they are to adjust compared to 4 hole bindings and You can place them in many more positions on the board than traditional bindings.

4. The biggest drawback is the fact that these bindings only work with Burton Channel Tech boards.

Did we want to hate the EST set up?  Yes because we aren't fan's of proprietary tech that only works with Burton boards. However after riding and playing around with the new bindings we couldn't help but like them.  Would we buy the EST set up?  No because we ride too many boards and don't want a set of bindings only for Burton.  We feel the Re:Flex are close enough in terms of flex underfoot to allow.  There is a Restricted version of EST with a bigger ankle strap that we like better.

The Good Ride take on the Burton Cartel Re:Flex Bindings

In our opinion these bindings are the way to go.  The minimized base plate and flexible disc make for a very natural flex with the board.  It flexes the board a little better torsionally but the real advantage is with the longitudinal flex. They have many of the qualities of the Cartel EST but also have the ability to ride other boards with 4 hole mounts.  They aren't as good as the EST's but are very close and the fact that you can ride them with any board is a huge plus in this day and age.  There are many companies that make amazing boards and they should be tried.  They have a restricted model as well that has a bigger ankle strap that we really like.

The Good Ride take on the discontinued Burton Cartel Disc Bindings

These are just normal bindings like any other binding out there. They have a traditional disc mount and like all bindings there is a slight dead spot under foot compared to the Re:Flex and even more so compared to the EST.  These are still great bindings but newer tech is better.

How It Rides
Stiffness-
These bindings have a solid mid flex but allow enough flex for tweaked out jib maneuvers if need be. Since the Cartels have pretty high high backs it is really easy to have leverage to turn well on your heel side.  We were pretty happy with all but the really aggressive stiff freeride boards.  We found the Union Force line to be easier when it came to bending a stiff snowboard tortionally but still these do a pretty good jobThe EST, RE:Flex and old Disc all do about the same job tortionally flexing a board.  However the new larger ankle strap on the 2012 Restricted EST and 2012 Restricted Re:Flex do a better job than the other models.
Comfort-
The straps are right up there with the best without sacrificing performance. The ankle strap on the RE:Flex and EST is small but very soft. If you are someone who cranks these down you will feel very little pain. The 2011 and 2012 toe strap is versatile as well and does a far better job over the 2010. Allot of people love it over the toe and some still love it the old school way. With these new straps you can do either and feel very comfortable.  All High backs are asymmetrical and allow your boots to fit perfectly and feel comfortable leaning forward or backward.  There is little difference in comfort between the 2010, 2011 and 2012 burton cartels.  The only bindings that might have a little more support and therefore comfort are the 2012 Restricted Re:Flex and 2012 Restricted EST because they both have a bigger asymmetrical ankle strap but that is debatable.  The EST's do have an EVA foot bed that runs across all the contact with the boot and it's probably the most comfortable.  The Re:Flex is really close because it has similar cushioning in the toe and heel area.  There is less padding over the heel/disc area but it's not that much of an isue.  The Re:Flex and EST's are pretty close in terms of a comfortable foot bed but the old disc Cartel didn't have the padding in the toe.
Response-
When you want to be somewhere these bindings will not make you work too hard to get there. Toe or heel edge you can turn pretty quick but it's not lightning fast like some other bindings out there.  Many people like this type of response because it's a bit more forgiving when riding medium to soft flexing boards.  It's not going to compete with some of the more stiffer freeride bindings in terms of response. Some of the riders felt that the toe edge was not as responsive as the heel edge but it still had a smooth ride and good turn initiation.  What ever you need to do weather it be turning or jibbing these bindings become an extension of your boots.  The 2012 EST/Restricted EST Cartels have the most response, the 2012 Re:Flex/Restricted Re:Flex Cartel's are a close second, and the discontinued Disc comes in third.  Again we love the big asymmetrical ankle straps on the 2012 restricted models over the smaller straps but you probably know that allready. There is just more leverage for all around riding.
Adjustability-
No binding except for other Burton's are as adjustable as these. Almost any way you want these bindings tweaked it can be done. The High backs have a very easy forward lean tool that won't slow you down if you need to make an adjustment. The ankle strap can change to 3 positions that go from super tight to super freedom. The toe strap has 2 positions as well. The toe of the base plate also is very adjustable and easy to do so. The best part of this set up is the way you can adjust the high backs to line up with the board. Most bindings only have 3 positions but Burton has a sliding adjuster that allows you to adjust to 21 to -21 degrees.  There is really no difference in adjustability when it comes to all these bindings.  The only binding that has a slight advantage is the EST because they have more stance/angle options on the board but binding to boot is the same.
Dampening/Shock Absorption-
The cartels do very well at high speed and don't add to your boards chatter. They have adopted the gel cushioning at the heel and have good padding at the front. They can handle straight line runs or kickers of any size.
Board/Boot Integration-
These bindings bond the board and boot together. There are not many bindings like this that can work with almost any type of board weather it be park or big mountain!

Overall we have and are still very impressed with The Cartel Line. We have to say our favorite of these bindings was the Cartel Restricted Re:Flex but if you only ride Burton boards then the Restricted EST will be the best call as well.  The other bindings

A Good Ride Take on Binding Tech
Metal vs Plastic Bindings

This is a Good ride breakdown for all you that are having a tough time choosing your bindings and what to make of the material you are looking at.  Most bindings are Metal, Plastic or some combo of the 2.

Metal Bindings have a lot of great aspects.  Almost all-metal bindings are made from aluminum.  Aluminum is great when it come to weight to stiffness ratio and also pretty durable.  There is one key issue with metal/aluminum bindings; they transfer all the vibrations from the board right into your feet.  This is the same principle that pelage “bass-less” bindings, your feet got totally tired or fatigued.  The newer generations have much better/damp bases so this problem has been minimized and in some cases eliminated.   There are some companies that make great bindings despite the vibration issue with Aluminum.   Some that come to mind are Ride and Rome.

Plastic Bindings also have many great features but let’s address some technical stuff first.  Most plastic bindings are really hardened glass plastic mix.   The high-end stuff tends to have a more carbon, and carbon fiber added for extra stiffness and weight savings.  Plastic bindings really dominate the market right now and most top bindings these days are mostly or all plastic.  They can be really stiff and react well to your commands.   The new bindings finally dialed in the carbon/ fiber integration to the point that the bindings will perform with the stiffness of metal and absorb more chatter.  Most industry leaders have limited or completely eliminated metal from their bindings and we feel that with the materials used right now this is the future.  Some mostly plastic companies that we feel rock are Burton, Flux and Union.

What kind of binding should you buy?  It’s a tough call.  Both Plastic and Metal bindings offer freestyle, freeride and all mountain styles.  At this point we feel that plastic bindings are edging out metal bindings when it comes to the very high end $300+ category.  However it is a tough call in the below $300 category as to which material has the advantage.

The Good Ride Take on Burton

Burton is huge. They have developed or acquired most of the technology that we use today. Burton is one of the only companies that can provide you with everything you need to snowboard from boards to beanies.  Burton even owns arguably the best surfboard company Channel Islands because Jake likes to surf.  They are like the Yankees of snowboarding because they can always outspend their competition to win.

The positives- Burton provides more products for each gear/clothing/accessory category than any other company.  Burton has possibly the best customer service in the snowboarding industry.  Burton continuously spends more money than almost any company to develop new tech or just make what they have better.   Burton sponsors more pro’s and get’s more high level user feed back than any other company.  They have some of the best boots, bindings and boards in the industry.  They also have great clothing.
The Negatives- Because Burton spends so much money on sponsorship and tech they have to pass this cost along to the products they sell.   They relentlessly continue to jack up the prices every year.  You are almost always going to get a good product from Burton’s higher end line but some mid to low level products don’t stack up to the competition in the same price range.   Just remember it’s not always good because it hast the Burton label on it.

While we’ve refined this recipe with improvements like Re:Flex™, AutoCANT cushioning, a new hi-back with no built-in Forward Lean, and special edition straps that let you switch between support and mobility, it’s still the same binding…only better.

CARTEL EST

Ride long and prosper.

Remember that episode where Shatner was making out with that hot green piece of alien ass? Neither do we, because Kirk don’t ride. The point is, the Cartel EST™ is so advanced it’ll melt your heart just like Shatner’s. This binding is from the future and you’re probably not ready for it. But if you’re one who boldly goes where no man has gone before, then step up. Just don’t forget to make the V with your hand.

CARTEL

Pure, unadulterated shred.

The Cartel™ is a cool name for this binding because it simply states what the Cartel is—a pirate band of snowboard technologies jolly-rogering the slopes in the most worthy of crafts. It doesn’t matter what that means, what does matter are keywords like “smoke weight,” “diesel strength,” “maxed out comfort,” and “shred-everything.” What the hell does “ergonomic” even mean? Shit’s comfortable, end of story.

Burton Cartel 2010

There’s a reason more pros, regardless of who’s paying them, choose the Cartel™. Simply put, it’s got everything you could ask for—smoke-weight, diesel strength, and maxed out comfort in a shred-everything package. An ergonomically canted Team Skyback® II and super-minimized Ultra Capstrap™ enhance control, while NEW FullBED™ cushioning and B3 Gel absorb negativity from harsh landings.
Baseplates
  • 30% Short-Glass/Nylon Composite

A slightly higher amount of response and power without sacrificing mobility.

    pdetail-bind-base-30-shortglass-nylon.jpg
  • Single-Component

One material throughout the entire baseplate creates consistent response and feel for a versatile ride that excels on all terrain.

Hi-Backs
  • Canted Living Hinge™

This exclusive technology eliminates excess hardware and weight, and even allows you to adjust your Forward Lean™ independent of your hi-back rotation. Set your hi-back rotation once, never touch it again, and still be able to adjust the Forward Lean any time.

    pdetail-bind-hi-backs-canted-living-hinge_01.jpg,pdetail-bind-hi-backs-canted-living-hinge_02.jpg
  • NEW Single-Component

The simplicity of a one-piece design means immediate response that lets you feel the entire mountain. Through material blends we can then control the overall flex profile—from soft and surfy to ultra responsive.

Cushioning
  • B3 Gel Heel Cushioning

The same cushioning found in our high-end boots, B3 Gel lets you stomp flat landings without self-detonating.

    pdetail-bind-cushioning-b3-gel-heel-cush.jpg
  • NEW FullBED Cushioning System

Found on the C60™, C02™, Triad™, Cartel™, Escapade™, and Lexa™, NEW FullBED™ baseplate padding offers a full coverage, cushioned platform that maximizes comfort while minimizing fatigue.

Buckles
  • Dual-Component

Dual-component hi-backs let us modify the flex profile by interchanging the frames on the spine. The spine maintains the structural integrity and flex of the hi-back, while the frame acts independently to support the boot. By doing this we can offer more comfortable and supportive hi-backs while eliminating dreaded calf bite.

  • Smooth Glide Buckle Technology

Buttery smooth entry and release, and unmatched strength are the trademarks of our Smooth Glide™ buckle technology. Polished, chrome-plated aluminum and lightweight polycarbonate levers give you season after season of premium ratcheting power. Best of all, our buckles are designed and built by us, not some shady supplier.

Response

Every binding in our line rides differently. The best way to describe the type of ride is through our response rating. The response rating is based primarily on the construction, profile, and materials used in the baseplate, hi-back, cushioning system, and straps, as well as feedback we get from our team riders and product testers. Based only as a comparison between the bindings within our line, a rating of one is more relaxed while ten is more responsive.

This is my 8th pair of Burton Cartel's and they are my almost exclusive do everything binding. These will comfort and spring when you feel jumpy that day but they also will be super comfortable and highly responsive on your more downhill and speed freak days. To me it almost seems if there are impulses attached to these bindings that read your mind when you think toe edge/heel edge and do it before hand. Crazy amazing response. Comfort are the best out there this season in this price range, which is what made me get these and not the Union Atlas. Very dummy proof to get into and out of, never any hang ups.

The only trouble I run into with this binding is that they do become loose in the bolts more than you would like. I do not mean that they have ever just come undone or anything of the sorts, just that you need to check your bolts before everyday you go slope slidin. So for that I have to realistically give these bindings a 4.75. But let's be honest if you don't check your gear before hitting the hills your a GOOF anyway!

Great Bindings

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
I switched to these bindings this year because my Rome's broke. I really enjoy these bindings because its hard to tell they are on your board. As I ride this season, i've never even thought about them which in my opinion is the sign of a great binding. I've never thought to myself that I wish i had better response or better dampening. They are just perfect to me.

Great all around binding, however one small issue

3 of 6 people found the following review helpful
I have this a 4 only because the price is somewhat high. Haven ridden this binding for the past two winters i am overall impressed. They keep you planted and still have some flexibility. my only issues i had were that the toe strap would sometimes come off. not that big of a deal, but worth mentioning. Another thing i noticed about this was that the base is very concave. I found that i would have foot cramping issues because of this, i ghetto fixed it and a happy :D
