Patagonia Capilene 1 Crew 1st Layer Snowboard Clothing Review

$40
If you get hot a lot with your jacket on then try this instead of the Capilene 2 or 3 Crews.  It's great for people who over heat.  Yeah Patagonia isn't the first choice for snowboard clothing and is often called Pataguchi but hell they makes clothes that last forever.  Another thing we like about Patagonia is they are the only clothing company that is closest to zero enviormental impact in the action sports industry.  Supporting them is like investing long term in the snow we ride.

The Good Ride Take

A Goodride layering breakdown.

One of the most important things to remember for your comfort on the slopes is the correct layer.  We will go over the three basic types and how the differ in material and uses.

First- Cotton or some times called baby long johns.  Unless you ride a day or two a year and even then they have no place on the snow.  As cotton gets wet it loses all it insulation value so if you are falling and sitting down a lot your layers will get wet and stay that way all day and will make you colder.  For example we all have worn a T-shirt and seen how wet they get are always the last item to dry so stay away from cotton.

Second- Polypropylene/Nylon this is what most laying is made out of and is the best and most affordable way to go.  There is a big range in layers you can go from the Wal-Mart Special which is great for people that only go up once and a while.  Then there is the Patagonia or Burton, Dekine layers which are made with a higher quality polypropylene. These are for the people that go up to the slopes often and want to stay warm dry and not smelly.  The major difference between the brands is not just price but rather quality, for example a Patagonia Capolen will last for years and will feel less like a plastic bag against your skin and will not smell.  This is a big area that people really don’t know about, that the cheaper the nylon layer the worse it will feel against your skin, it will make it kind of clammy.  The other big issue is cheap nylon has the major problem of retaining body order, no matter how much you wash it.

So when buying polypropylene/nylon layers always buy a better quality because it will last a lot longer and you will be more likely to use it when it feels nice and does not smell, i.e. you will be more comfortable on the slopes.

Third- Wool is a old material that has gotten a lot of technical changes that make them the best way to go, but also the most expensive. We all have the idea of that scratchy wool sweater which is the wrong idea of what wool is not, especially in layering.  Wool is a natural material so it has great breathing and moister wicking properties, which are much better then Polypropylene.  The new wool is high quality Merino Wool that is really soft and has a great feeling against the skin.  Wool is also made in a verity or thicknesses so get this out of your mind that it will be to warm.  Many great companies like Smart Wool, Ice Breakers make wool layers in all shapes and sizes, from thick to super thin.   Wool also does not smell, and does not hold body odor.  Also wool lasts a very long time and is really tough and will last for years to come.

Breakdown

Cotton has no use unless you are hanging at the bar and want a cool T-Shirt to wear, other wise there is no good use for cotton in layering.

Polypropylene is a great material at a fairly reasonable price.  Wool has all the same properties and befits I listed about, but does cost more so take into consideration of how much you play.  Polypropylene and wool are for every activity form running, biking and snowboarding in all types of weather and temps.  Polypropylene is the most widely used outdoor material for layering.   There are so many different options that you can find what level that you need for what giving activity.  This is area that people over do the layering and buy heavy layers that are great on cold day, but are super hot on a warmer spring so you get you cotton long sleeve which soaks up all you sweet and makes you cold a warm spring day.  That is way polypropylene and wool is great is can get soaked with sweat and then provides great insulation value and dries out quite fast.  Another thing to remember with polypropylene and wool is that it is better to go thinner and layer with a fleece then a heavy layer that really only belongs in Alaska.  You always want to be a little cool when you start you activity.  We all had those days when you left the house and feel warm and toasty, but as soon as you walk from the parking lot to the lift line you are sweating.

This is a basic breakdown of what layering is all about and the different materials that they are made of.  You may not agree with us and you want to wear you T-Shirt when every you ride, well go for it, just remember that on the powder day you will always have the wet frozen shirt tail.  So stay comfortable out there you will have a lot better time when you do, and please don’t buy crappy gear it only hurt you and the planet.
