686 just makes well made clothes with good waterproofing. You pay a little more to get a few extra features that many other companies don't offer. The Smarty line has been around for a while and have earned a good reputation. You get a good waterproof pant with a good liner pant for warmth as well. These are a step up from the Smarty Origional Pant. They add more waterproofing (20k vs. 15k), have a 1st layer and have a fleece pant as well.
