Beginner to Expert Freestyle to All Mountain
Camber Twin Shape

For 2012 the YES Basic comes in two shapes. They offer camber like they did in 2011 and their hybrid camber shape that they call camrock for 2012.  So they pretty much added the hybrid camber 2011 YES Typo to the basic line which makes things easier for us.  This is a solid, playful, loose, springy snowboard at a reasonable price.  The YES basic camrock and the Rossignol Taipan are two of our favorite all mountain freestyle boards below $400.  The Yes Basic went from a YES is made by Nidecker and this is a very good thing.   Nidecker is a Swiss company known for making high quality snowboards and for some reason never really took off in the US. YES and Jones (made by Nidecker) proved that with the correct marketing Nideckers boards can sell here.  Burton must be kicking themselves after dropping the YES guys because they seem to be blowing up these days and make really fun boards. What is also cool about the 2012 Basic is YES has a size for everyone this year.  They have Wides, Regulars, Small/Women's and Kid sizes.  Check out the detailed review below.

The Good Ride Take

Yes Basic Review by The Good Ride

Days- 8+
Riders- 5'10" 195lbs size 9 shoe, 5'11" 160lbs size 10.5, 5'11" 175 size 8.5 shoe

Boards Tried 157 and 159

Boots- Nike Kaiju, Burton SLX, Rome Libertine Pure Flex

Bindings- Burton Co2, Burton Cartel Re:Flex, Flux TT30

This is soo much fun for a $399 board.  Love the camrock and you could feel the edges bite into the hard snow in steep terrain. Base seems faster than last year. Also construction looks very good. We tried the 159 at the demo day and Jimbo said that out of all the boards he tried that day the Yes camrock was the most fun to turn.   We then got a hold of the 157 for a couple weeks and got to learn all about the board.  We found this to be very similar to the Rossignol Taipan.  We found the Basic to have a faster base and the Taipan to have a little better float in powder due to the setback.  Well here is our take on the Basic Camrock.

A quick look at the YES Basic

Groomers- This is a pretty good all conditions ride.  We had slushy, almost icy hard pack and packed powder groomer runs and everything was handled very well with the Yes Basic.  It's a little too loose to be an excellent groomer board but if you like to make good turns for a bit and then jib around on natural terrain this could be perfect.

Powder- The YES Basic is a really fun board for a twin with a centered stance. We had a day with some powder and another day with some left over powder that was a little over a foot. The basic floated well and if riding switch in powder is your thing this will be a great board.  If you like to set it back and get the most effortless float in powder we feel the Taipan has the advantage here.

Turn Initation- The Basic can turn very very easy and would be good for just about any level rider.  It's pretty loose between the feet for a hybrid camber snowboard and almost feels as catch free as a hybrid rocker board without the squirrely feel you get flatbasing on hard pack or one footing.  If you make short or wide turns the Basic will be predictable and easy.

Speed- The Basic is a soft board so this isn't going to light the world on fire when it comes to fighting chatter at speed.  Still this does a very good job for it's flex.  It can handle moderate speeps and is good for a board that can jib like this.  It's a very ballanced ride.
Weight-This is right in the middle.

Edge Hold- We liked how this held in just about any condition you want to ride.  It held well in the pipe, on hard pack and did well with just about everything but pure east coast ice.  It's not going to bite like many magnetraction boards but it does a good job.

Flex- This is a pretty soft board it was smooth when it comes to buttering around the mountain or hitting the jib park.  It's not a noodle but it's pretty soft in the tip and tail.

Carving- We were able to make a pretty serious carve without washing out and love hybrid camber for this.  It does really well for a board of this flex.

Switch- Its a true twin so it's perfect switch.

Rails/Jibbing- The camber between the feet on this board is not very high.  It's almost like it's flat so combine that with the soft flex you have a really good rail and jib board.   It almost feels like a flat/rocker board when sliding across a rail or box.  We had a lot of fun in the park with this.

Pipe- Usually a pipe board and a jib park board don't do well together but the basic was pretty fun in the pipe.  The edges weren't tainted from too much jib park play so it still held an edge well in the pipe.

Jumps- We had a lot of fun in the roller coaster line.  It was also pretty springy when it came to generating your own air.  In the park or out of the park you will have a good time on the Basic.

All in all we were really impressed with the Basics performance in and out of the park. It rides better than many $500 board we tried.  Well done YES.

The Good Ride Take On YES Snowboards
Yes has been around now for a few years and has established itself as one of the better hybrid camber snowboards in the US.  We are big fans of hybrid camber because it’s stable between the feet, has good edge hold and is very floaty in powder.    The guys who designed these boards are from Burton and they had Nidecker make the boards.  Nidecker has been around since 1984 and has an amazing reputation in Europe.  They just haven’t found a way to correctly market themselves in the US which is a shame because they make great boards.  YES did have some cosmetic issues with their boards but most of that is behind them now. Our biggest complaint is that we’d like to see Women’s boards and Wide boards from YES as well.   Almost every board from YES is well thought out and usually won’t disappoint.

The Good Ride Take on Hybrid Camber
For the most part there are two types of hybrid camber that we see out there these days.

1. Mostly Rocker Hybrid Camber
This type of ride, like many boards, has camber and rocker but unlike other rockered boards the center has a mini camber. This is usually 1-3mm high, sits only between the bindings and then curves up right after. From a distance this board looks like a rocker board but when you look closer you see the little camber between the feet. This is not as loose as hybrid rocker but it’s very close. It is very stable between the feet and easy to one foot or flat base in any condition out there. Mostly Rocker Hybrid Camber is very versatile. You will see this design on anything from Freestyle to Freeride style snowboards. This will work well with all ability levels and riding styles.

2 Mostly Camber Hybrid Camber
There are all types of designs but this type usually looks like a Camber board and rides much closer to an old school Camber board.  ONe thing you will notice is usually when you step on the board the tip and tail rise up a lot more than a normal camber board will.  Some are mostly camber and others have a bit more rocker but you will always notice they have camber.  This allows for a stable, fast carve friendly feeling you get with camber but also makes it more catch free and floaty in powder.  This doesn't float effortlessly like hybrid rocker, mostly rocker hybrid camber or flat to rocker but it does better than camber.  You will mainly see this on aggressive freestyle to all mountain to freeride style snowboards.

The big easy

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful
I am actually reviewing the 2011 Yes Typo 159 which i'm told is the same as the 2012 Yes Basic. I have ridden the board for about 20 days now and experienced everything from the Icy crap we're having early this 2011/2012 season to knee deep powder in April 2011. This board is a great all around board especially for a beginner. the best part of this board would have to be its twin powder performance and super easy turn initiation. this is one of those boards that feels huge when you are bombing in powder (even with stance centered), yet small when you want to play around and make small turns. The sintered base is pretty fast for a cheaper board which is nice. its not run-away fast but good for a beginner trying to push themselves.

My complaints with this board would be that it is slightly heavier than you would want for a park board, the edge hold is not great and the top sheet just seems cheap and delicate to me. This is something that they will probably fix being a newer company but if you look at my board, you would probably think I had ridden it for 80 days instead of just 20. Other than that, this is the ideal board for a beginner. There is definitely board that are better in every category but probably none for $379. I really enjoyed this board.
