Capita Totally FK'n Awesome Snowboard Review

Advanced to Expert All Mountain to Mostly Mountain
Directional Hybrid Camber Shape
FYI- this is not a Mid/Wide board even though the waist width is pretty wide. The extension of the side cut at the waist makes the board look bigger than it seems.
The Totally FK'n Awesome is very similar to the Capita Capita Black Snowboard of Death amd to us it's like a slightly heavier less expensive version of the Capita Black Snowboard of Death.  It's still a very aggressive board just like the BSOD but it's just made for riders looking at a lower price point.  It rides somewhere in between the Yes Big City and the Rome Headline when it comes to riding style but also has some similarities to the also new Salomon Mans Board.  This is a good one board all condition ride solution for a mostly mountain rider that likes the BSOD but needs that extra $100 for bindings.   Check out the detailed review below.
Similar Boards- Rome Anthem Arbor Element CX, Bataleon The Enemy, Capita Black Snowboard of Death, K2 Protohype, K2 Slayblade, Nidecker Platinum, Ride Highlife UL, Rome Anthem SS, Rome Headline, Salomon XLT, Venture Zephyr

The Good Ride Take

The Capita Totally FK'n Awesome Snowboard Review by the Good Ride

Size 159
2 Riders- 5'10", 200lbs size 9 shoe.  6' 160lbs Size 10.5
Bindings- Union Atlas
Boots- Burton SLX

The 159 Capita BSOD was a board that we really enjoyed so we pretty much expected the same thing from the Totally FKn' Awesome since there are so many similarities.  It comes a little shorter and a little wider so it has a more of an all mountain ride that has more freestyle appeal than the BSOD but it's still more of an all mountain ride.  We felt the 159 Totally FK'n Awesome rode bigger than the 159 BSOD and the 157 probably would of been a bit more of an apples to apples comparison.

Groomers-  This is a great groomer board and it's super fun to take it out when the conditions are good and carve or bomb.  It has a nice camber feel to it here and it can handle dirty groomers as well as clean without getting too cranky.
Powder- If you compare this to the Yes Big City it's not going to be as good but it's a little less work than the Rome Headline and about the same or slightly better than the Salomon Mans Board.  Still the rocker at the tip and tail help alot over a regular camber board. The setback is the same as the BSOD at 1/2 an inch which makes an easier float for directional powder riding.

Turn Initiation/Carving-  Just like the BSOD we had a blast carving but the personality is slightly different when it came to turn initiation.  When it came to short quick turns the BSOD was better here and we felt this took a little more work for the same board size.  More work isn't always bad and many of us actually prefer a board that isn't super easy so we liked this feel.

Speed- This felt almost as fast as the BSOD.  Capita says this is more damp than the BSOD and we'll beleive them because we didnt' push either to their limits and don't care to.  I like what's still remaining.  We will say that we thought the BSOD held and picked up it's speed better on a long cat track or through a flat zone than the Totally FK'n Awesome but it's always hard to tell when you ride them on different days.

Weight- You could feel the extra weight in the Totally FK'n Awesome over the BSOD.  We'd like to see them lighten it up for 2013.

Edge Hold- Just like the BSOD the edge hold is excellent and isn't to overly grabby like Magnetraction can be at times. If you keep this up the hybrid camber along with the extension in the middle makes for a lot of grip around the feet and will hold an edge in any condition.

Flex- This is a stiff board but it doesn't act as bad as you would think when you get it on the hill.  The hybrid camber helps you butter a little easier than a camber board of this flex but it's still not easy.

Switch- This is a directional board but it seems a bit on the twinish side.  It wasn't bad riding switch but you could tell the difference when you did.

Rails/Jibbing- Not that much fun.  It's too stiff.

Pipe- Many people like a stiffer more aggressive board in the pipe. This a little more fun riding in the pipe than the BSOD but both rock.  We could of taken out the 157 and it would of felt almost like the 159 BSOD.   Like the BSOD it can be a little unforgiving but for the most part this is a great pipe board.

Jumps- The new hybrid camber tech is pretty springy.  We had fun generating our own air.  It's not a #1 but it's closer to the the top of it's class.  It's also good for those who like to go big off a man made kicker.

So at first we were wondering why Capita would make a board so similar to the BSOD.  However after riding the Totally FK'n Awesome we found it does have it's own personality and probably will fit a wider range of riders than it's older bro.

The Good Ride Take on Capita and Union
(same parent company)

Union-
Union really lead the charge with the concept of eliminating the dead spot bindings create on snowboards.  Because of that they have some of if not the easiest turn initiation out of any binding we have tried.  The bindings with the Force style base plate really shows this and can make a stiff snowboard turn easier than most bindings out there.  The bindings with the Contact style base plate have a more mellow turn initiation.  The last few years many companies have picked up on this design style and Union isn't alone any more in this category.  Still Union makes some of the best bindings in the industry.  One of the only complaints we have is the buckle on the toe strap is very difficult to undo when it’s cranked down.   We would like to see something like the ankle strap buckle that releases with little effort.  Another complaint is the adjust-ability of their bindings.  You can make some minor tweaks to make the bindings work for you but Union pales in comparison to Burton when it comes to adjust-ability.  If you aren't that into adjusting and want possibly the best turn initiation in the industry the Union's are your choice.

Capita- Capita knows how to make a good sturdy park and all mountain board.  They even have a good Pow board that’s priced appropriately for the amount of times you’ll use it a year.  As you start to look closer in the tech of Capita you can see little issues like some of their boards still have an extruded base instead of a sintered base.  You won't really see this on their high end boards like the Black Death but you will see it on their mid to entry level boards.  Because of this style of production you can sometimes find a Capita snowboard for $100-$200 less than some of their competitors in that class range.   If you are willing to put up with low tech in some places but still receive good performance Capita might be a good choice for you.

The Good Ride Take on Hybrid Camber
For the most part there are two types of hybrid camber that we see out there these days.

1. Mostly Rocker Hybrid Camber
This type of ride, like many boards, has camber and rocker but unlike other rockered boards the center has a mini camber. This is usually 1-3mm high, sits only between the bindings and then curves up right after. From a distance this board looks like a rocker board but when you look closer you see the little camber between the feet. This is not as loose as hybrid rocker but it’s very close. It is very stable between the feet and easy to one foot or flat base in any condition out there. Mostly Rocker Hybrid Camber is very versatile. You will see this design on anything from Freestyle to Freeride style snowboards. This will work well with all ability levels and riding styles.

2 Mostly Camber Hybrid Camber
There are all types of designs but this type usually looks like a Camber board and rides much closer to an old school Camber board.  ONe thing you will notice is usually when you step on the board the tip and tail rise up a lot more than a normal camber board will.  Some are mostly camber and others have a bit more rocker but you will always notice they have camber.  This allows for a stable, fast carve friendly feeling you get with camber but also makes it more catch free and floaty in powder.  This doesn't float effortlessly like hybrid rocker, mostly rocker hybrid camber or flat to rocker but it does better than camber.  You will mainly see this on aggressive freestyle to all mountain to freeride style snowboards.

SPICE UP YOUR LOVE LIFE!

The ultimate goals of young males are pretty simple: look cool, don’t do anything stupid, and – hopefully – score babes. We realize
that this is easier said than done. Especially if you’re talking about ski babes sippin’ martinis after a few runs on the hill. No need to
worry though, as we’ve consulted our resident expert to help. As an international man of leisure, an authority on the realm of
fraternization, and an experienced older man in general, Dr. Corey Smith once again presents you with an official cheat sheet for this
winter’s social events. Please cut out and carry with you always...

The Top Ten apre ski pick up lines:

10. “You really know how to handle those poles.”

9. “Last time I saw peaks like that they had snow on them.”

8. “I don’t like to brag, but they named this run after me.”

7. “So, are those skis yours?... Both of them?”

6. “I wouldn’t pull your pass if you ducked my rope.”

5. “Looks like they’ve been doing avalanche control, because I just
found a bombshell.”

4. “Can I park my pipe dragon in your garage?”

3. “This mountain isn’t a volcano, but we can still make an explosion.”

2. “The snow report says 6”, but come with me and I’ll show you
more.”

1. “You got the buns. I got the Cobra Dog™.”

Why You'll Like It:

Because you don’t get a name like Totally FK’n Awesome if you’re anything less. These hybrid camber boards were built to man-handle each and every feature of Mother Nature’s great mountainous terrain. The elevated contact points are rockered just enough to float through soft snow, while the cambered mid section and slight reversed side cut arc allow you to grip it and rip it – staying in complete control.
