Burton Custom Snowboard Review

Burton Custom and Burton Custom Wide $529
Intermediate to Expert All Mountain
Twin Like Directional Shape with Camber
2008 Future Top Ten Award Winner
Years ago the Burton Custom defined the all mountain category. If you don't know about this board then you havent been snowboarding. Its been around and on top longer than any other board out there and is the standard for longevity. You can do anything with this. The last 2 years the board is more twinish. The Burton Custom is ok for intermediate riders but is far better suited for advanced to expert riders.  They will appreciate and be able to handle the Custom much better. The 2012 Burton Custom hasn't changed very much except for a tech upgrade with Squeezebox and Lightining Bolt tech which did improve the ride but it wasn't that much of a game changer as we thought it might be for the custom.  For some reason we noticed it more on the hybrid rocker/rocker shapes than we did on the Custom but maybe that is because we were riding the Custom and Custom X a little differently than the freestyle boards.  We were more interested in carving and higer speeds with these boards.   Read the full break down below

The Good Ride Take

Burton Custom & Custom ICS All Mountain Snowboard Review

Days on the Board- 25
Bindings Used- Burton Co2, Burotn Cartels Burton P1's and Burton Diodes
Riders That Tested it- 5

Every company has to make an “all mountain” board.  What usually happens is you get a board that does everything average and nothing great.   This board really appeals to the masses because it does most everything slightly above average and a few things rather well. This is a great board for someone who likes everything or someone who wants to try everything. The custom is also a great board for those that still love the feel of camber when it isn't dumping and have a hybrid or rocker shape for powder riding. We have ridden this board almost every year and don't have much to add to this review for 2012.  It's pretty much the same board.

Groomers-
If you like morning Groomers then this board is great to make quick or slow turns on the morning corduroy. If you’re not that into the park and just like to cruz this is a great board for almost all conditions. Like most boards it’s not fun when it’s really hard packed snow or icy.
Powder- In the past we would say the Custom Camber board does well in the powder but these days it can't keep up with the rocker or hybrid shapes out there.  It still does well for camber but it can't come close to the Burton Custom Flying V Rocker when it gets really deep.  Still some hold outs feel that camber is better but we feel the Camber custom is average where before the rocker revolution we would of said it was good.
Speed- This board does very well at slow to medium speeds but can't haul ass like the custom X. The base is pretty fast and the board has a medium flex. We'd say it's border line excellent.
Weight- This is a pretty light board. It’s not going to break any records but it does reside comfortably in the pretty light category. You might notice this on your front foot when riding up a chair but you’re not going to say Fu$(when is this lift over.
Turn Initiation/Carving- This is probably the Burton Custom's best quality. It’s a pretty narrow mid flexing board with a decent side cut so when you want to turn it its pretty responsive.  It still leaves a little work for you to do if you want to lay into a turn.  It is fun to make big turns or short tight turns and it will never let you down in a tight spot.  When it comes down to laying a serious carve the Custom isn't as good as the Custom X but pretty close enough to still call excellent.
Edge Hold- This board has good edge hold considering it has a traditional shape and a medium flex.  It’s not anywhere close to the custom x with its pressure distribution edges or now called frost bite edges between the feet but it will hold an edge in most hard pack conditions and in most pipes.
Stiffness- This is a soft to medium flexing board.
Switch- Even though this board is directional it's twinish shape still can ride switch pretty well. It does feel a lot different than riding regular. You will get use to it but it’s nowhere near as fun as a twin or even many directional twins.
Pipe- This board does pretty well in the pipe. It has enough edge hold to climb most walls.
Jibbing- Not terribly jib friendly but this is a cambered board with a medium flex.
Rails/Boxes- Hit em and you'll be just fine
Jumps- It’s a good board for jumps and can handle most anything you throw at it. These days the Camber shape is a little more technical aka less forgiving than the newer rocker shapes.  One thing that is hard to duplicate with the hybrid and rocker shapes is the pop you can get from the camber model of the Burton Custom.  This is a great board to generate your own air with.

The Good Ride Take on Burton

Burton is huge. They have developed or acquired most of the technology that we use today. Burton is one of the only companies that can provide you with everything you need to snowboard from boards to beanies.  Burton even owns arguably the best surfboard company Channel Islands because Jake likes to surf.  They are like the Yankees of snowboarding because they can always outspend their competition to win.

The positives- Burton provides more products for each gear/clothing/accessory category than any other company.  Burton has possibly the best customer service in the snowboarding industry.  Burton continuously spends more money than almost any company to develop new tech or just make what they have better.   Burton sponsors more pro’s and get’s more high level user feed back than any other company.  They have some of the best boots, bindings and boards in the industry.  They also have great clothing.

The Negatives- Because Burton spends so much money on sponsorship and tech they have to pass this cost along to the products they sell.   They relentlessly continue to jack up the prices every year.  You are almost always going to get a good product from Burton’s higher end line but some mid to low level products don’t stack up to the competition in the same price range.  Burton always tries to make proprietary tech like the channel tech and 3 hole binding tech so you can only ride Burton Gear which sucks! We wish they wouldn’t act like the Microsoft of snowboarding.

The bottom line is Burton is the 800lb patriarch Gorrilla of our industry that makes good stuff and backs it up with good customer service.  The snowboarding world owes soo much to them but at the same time they can be very frustrating when it comes to price and proprietary technology.

CUSTOM

Lord of the boards.

Without the Custom, snowboarding would not be where it is today. From the pipes and parks of freestyle progression to the backcountry lines of legend, this is truly one board to rule them all. Ridden by Mikkel Bang and Mads Jonsson, its classic camber design is now energized with Squeezebox, a new core concept that pushes power, snap, and stability further. Outfitting the pros since ’95 this board needs little validation. It is the Custom.

Camber

An advocate of powerful turns and poppy precision, camber speaks to the core values of board design. Acting like a suspension, camber creates a lively ride capable of slicing and stomping the entire mountain.

Camber distributes weight evenly over the entire length of the board allowing for smooth, continuous edge control from tip to tail.

My favourite board. (Custom 156 ICS Camber)

3 of 4 people found the following review helpful
First off I love to ride the whole mountain, pow at any given opportunity,I like the park too (mainly jumps and the odd box but not rails) and love a good blast on the piste slashing banks and playing around boosting off side hits and stuff.
This board is honestly my favourite out of all the boards I've had, it is REALLY light (way lighter than a custom X and way lighter than a skate banana)
turns really well whilst maintaining a fun and fairly forgiving nature, has good edge hold and edge grip but not as good as the custom x, it doesn't have the same grip as the skate banana but has better edge hold and personally I kinda like a board that washes out a tiny bit - its like skidding a bit in a go kart! (know what i mean?!)
it also has very good pop off jumps and an excellent fast base, I usually keep it well waxed and structured with a proper brush with a cork and on recent holiday I was nearly always leaving my friend (a skier - I know gay right) everyone on the cable car for dead.
The other thing I like about this board is you can go slow on it when needed and lets face it people there are alot of areas on a hill where this is needed (crowds for example)
I have also not had any quality issues with this board at all - like I said my favourite board I've ever had.
I also ride cartel est bindings with the super bed from the CO2's that make it more responsive AND more damp - all in all given the varied nature of snowboarding (even on a day lapping the park you have to navigate other people and ride some piste dontcha!)
I give this board top marks cos it always makes me smile.
Have a good season folks.

Disappointed with Burton Custom

2 of 4 people found the following review helpful
I expected a lot more from this legendary board. I'll admit it's fast, responsive, good with jumps, landing & lot's of pop, but was disappointed with the edge hold. Not recommended for riding on icy conditions (East coast). The tail would washout on aggressive curves on hard packed. I have an Arbor Elements and it's edge hold was phenomenal.

Have had both boards and both have been snapped at the nose in the same exact way. (topsheet pressure cracks which lead to the nose being like paper) This board sucks. If you want a good board buy a different company
