Burton Custom X and Burton Custom X Wide $649
Advanced to Expert Aggressive All Mountain to Freeride
Camber Directional Shape
2006 Good Wood Award Winner
Almost everyone knows about the Burton Custom X.  If for some reason you don't it is a stiffer more directional version of the the most well known board  the Burton Custom.   It's pretty stiff, fast and fun for tearing up the mountain at high speed. The 2012 Burton Custom X remains very similar to the 2011 Custom x and 2010 Custom X models in terms of the all around ride. They did add "Squeeze Box" tech to the 2012 which helps improve the flex between the feet but to us we didn't notice much of a difference compared to the previous models. We felt a bit of a difference on some other Burton boards with the Squeezebox tech but for some reason it seemed almost the same with the Custom X.  Check out the detailed review below.

The Good Ride Take

Burton Custom X and Burton Custom X Wide All Mountain Freeride Snowboard Review

Board Size Used-164,160 & 156
75+ days ridden

Bindings Used- Burton P1's and  Burton Cartels

The Custom X is  Especially if you like speed. This is not for beginners or intermediate riders.  This is for advanced riders who want to push themselves to expert level and expert riders who want a very aggressive board.  It isn't a board for anyone else.  We see many riders out on the hill who shouldn't be on this board and aren't having as much fun as they could be.  So ask yourself if you want to improve your ego or riding style before going this way.  The custom X really hasn't changed much over the last few years and every year we ride it we don't have that much new to add.  It's a fast hard carving aggressive board that we love to ride every year.  Everyone seems to have a custom x on the mountain. The Custom X is really hard to describe but a few stand outs are the edge to edge transitioning and its lively feel that gives you a go big feeling.

Groomers- If you like morning Groomers then you will be quite pleased with the Custom X when the corduroy is calling.  It's incredibly fun to turn and really fun to straightline.
Powder- Burton figured out a long time ago how to make an all around board work well in the fluffy stuff.  The Custom X does rather well in the powder for a cambered board. It has a decent set back and good sized front nose.  It's not going to keep up with most reverse cambered boards of the same shape like the Rome Anthem SS but its going to do very well for cambered boards.
Speed- Very Fast! The Custom X responds very well to a straight line or nice high speed turns. The base is fast and the board is stiff so it does very well at high speed. This board is made to go big and it won't disappoint.  Just make sure your health insurance has a low max out of pocket.
Weight- This is a very light board. Especially for a wood core. Every year it gets lighter. You might not notice this on your front foot when riding up a chair.  It doesn't hurt when you are riding either. It makes everything you try to do a little easier.
Turn Initiation/Carving- The Custom X is a pretty stiff board and it takes some work to initiate a turn. Compared to a hybrid rocker board it's incredibly difficult. If you compare it to camber boards of old the turn initiation is very easy so just want to put that into perspective with all the tech out there.  The Cuxtom X has a pretty narrow waist with a deep side cut so for it's size and stiffness this is pretty easy to make quick tight turns in trees or steeps.  When making wider turns it's stable and fun.  Carving might be the Custom X's best feature and one of the major reasons why this board is so popular. The old school camber shape is still the best when it comes to carving out a turn. It feels like at the end of a serious turn or carve that the Custom X is springing you out of the turn and setting you up for the next turn.  Not many boards have the ability to do that and that is what makes the Custom X special.
Edge Hold- The Custom X has allot of camber that drives the nose and tail's edge into the snow.  It also has stainless steel edges. Burton also extends their board out by 1/2 of a millimeter right near each of the binding mounts and you can see it if you look down the edges.  This helps edge hold in most firm or icy conditions. It’s a great idea and the custom x still has that traditional board feel with a little extra grip.
Flex- This is a stiff flex that is closer to the Medium side of stiff and a definitely a step up from the custom.  Every year Burton figures out how to keep this board chatter free at high speed and reduce the stiffness.
Switch- Even though the Custom X is more on the directional side it still can ride switch. It does feel a lot different than riding regular. You will get use to it but it’s nowhere near as fun as a twin.
Pipe- The Custom X does very well in the pipe. Good edge hold and gets you from one transition to the next. It's perfect if you aren't really hitting or landing fakie that much.  If you do you'll want to look for a different board.
Jibbing- You can jib around on this board but it’s not going to tickle your jib fancy like other soft park boards.  This is not it's best quality.
Rails/Boxes- Not the Custom X's  forte but it does pretty good for how stiff it is.  If you have such an expensive board you can probably afford a more rail friendly board and save your edges for a park mood swing.
Jumps-It springs off of any size jump and has enough stiffness to land just about anything.  Don’t worry about this board.......worry about your ability.  Because the custom x is pretty directional it's not the best if you spend a lot of time taking off or landing switch.  If you want something better suited for that look at a stiffer twin or directional twin.

All in all we were thouroughly impressed by the Custom X.  The Channel Tech really made it easier to turn and more responsive.  That being said we don't like that you are sentenced to only the bindings with 2 channel inserts.  Right now that is only Burton Bindings, Flow Bindings and Flux Bindings.  We don't know if it is worth the price after riding the $499 Rome Anthem.  If you need the Burton name and are enamored witht he extra tech then the Custom X is and will always be the only choice.

The Good Ride Take on Burton

Burton is huge. They have developed or acquired most of the technology that we use today. Burton is one of the only companies that can provide you with everything you need to snowboard from boards to beanies.  Burton even owns arguably the best surfboard company Channel Islands because Jake likes to surf.  They are like the Yankees of snowboarding because they can always outspend their competition to win.

The positives- Burton provides more products for each gear/clothing/accessory category than any other company.  Burton has possibly the best customer service in the snowboarding industry.  Burton continuously spends more money than almost any company to develop new tech or just make what they have better.   Burton sponsors more pro’s and get’s more high level user feed back than any other company.  They have some of the best boots, bindings and boards in the industry.  They also have great clothing.

The Negatives- Because Burton spends so much money on sponsorship and tech they have to pass this cost along to the products they sell.   They relentlessly continue to jack up the prices every year.  You are almost always going to get a good product from Burton’s higher end line but some mid to low level products don’t stack up to the competition in the same price range.  Burton always tries to make proprietary tech like the channel tech and 3 hole binding tech so you can only ride Burton Gear which sucks.

The bottom line is Burton is the 800lb patriarch of our industry that makes good stuff and backs it up with good customer service.  The snowboarding world owes soo much to them but at the same time they can be very frustrating when it comes to price and proprietary technology.

Camber

An advocate of powerful turns and poppy precision, camber speaks to the core values of board design. Acting like a suspension, camber creates a lively ride capable of slicing and stomping the entire mountain.

Camber distributes weight evenly over the entire length of the board allowing for smooth, continuous edge control from tip to tail.

Burton 2012 Custom X 152 Review

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
Burton Custom X 152 with Cartel bindings. Stats - 5 ft 7 in height, 145 pounds weight. Six days straight riding at Whistler Blackcomb Feb 2012, variable but generally good conditions, one day with some fresh powder. See my other review of the Custom Flying V also on this site.

Overall I found this to be an excellent board. I'm an intermediate rider (at best) and was slightly concerned after reading various reviews saying this board was for advanced riders only (hence my question to Lee below). Nonsense. As someone who has (stupidly) been away from riding for almost 10 years, camber is all I know. It's all I need to know apparently. On groomers this board is a hypersonic piste weapon of mass destruction. Fantastic edge-hold, carving ability and overall response. On a pow day I did manage to bury the nose a couple of times but I reckon this more due to crappy riding skills and failure to set back the bindings a little than it was to the board itself. It's a directional board and I rode it that way pretty much 95% of the time. It seemed ok when briefly riding switch but I just felt like bombing it most of the time. Again, there are probably better boards out there if you want to butter about the place. This board is super, super lightweight. I literally couldn't feel it hanging from my leg on the chair - a big plus and keeps the legs fresher for longer which means more riding at the end of the day. Paired with the est-Cartels the feel was nice. Check your screws with the channel binding at the start of each day though - seems like they can work loose after a couple days riding!

Summary: A stonking board. If you like getting off the lift and bombing it down the mountain you'll love this deck. Man, you'll love it. Next time I get out riding I'll try some other stuff but for those six days all I did was carve and bomb - couldn't get enough on this board.

Question for Lee - at 150 lbs, what size custom X did you try out? Thinking of buying so would greatly appreciate your answer. Cheers.

Custom X 2010 156 review

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful
I have looked at this sites review of this board many times before taking mine off the wall and putting it on the snow for the first time. I was honestly nervous and seriously question my purchase because I am barely an intermediate rider I figured I would tke the chance, risk life and limb (lol) and go for it. Well.......2 things. #1 I am SOOOO happy I did as I LOVE the board and, #2 I must respectfully disagree with anyone saying that you have to be an advance or expert rider to handle this board. As I previously said, I am barely an intermediate rider. Because of my apprehension and the many reviews stating that someone of my skill level shouldn't touch this board I spent the first part of the day dealing with some icy trails out in VT. I quickly found that the difficulty in handling this board was overexaggerated. I had no problem linking turns or carving. By the end of the day I was charging down icy intermediate trails with relative easy and a greatly increased level of confidence. So unless I am better than I give myself credit for I will have to respectfully disagree with the "Advanced only" recommendation.

Now for everything else:
Edge Hold- Excellent
Speed- Excellent
Turning/Carving- Excellent

Groomed or Choppy trails.....didn't make a difference. It blasts through everything like a bulldozer through tissue paper. Matched up with the CO2 bindings have have we are talking No Chatter. I loved it so much I am looking at my 2010 Flying-V wondering if I will ever use it again. I just wish we could get some deep pow out east this year so I can test it out there as well.

The Channel. I know some complain about the propriety issue but I don't mind it in the least.

Custom X 2011 Review

I felt compelled to share my experience on this board (2 days all mountain riding)
My first point is that it performs very well, excellent grip on all snow conditions, excellent dampening and obviously very fast. One thing that surprised me was that bumps do not slow it down at all, where alot of boards flex when you hit choppy bits this doesn't. It accelerates pretty much all the time - it is the snowboard version of a tank, it will not be stopped!
It is good in untracked powder but it is a bit unfriendly on tracked sections or any dips and bumps.
It is also alot heavier than ALL reviews would lead you to believe, infact it is a little bit tiring to ride for a day, alot like a sports car in that you simply cant have a little drive - you gotta go fast or it is not nice at all.
In short I found it to be very fast and perform very well but not very fun. In fact I would say in alot of situations it took the fun out of snowboarding - it isn't a very soulful experience riding one of these.
In short you HAVE to be a shit hot rider to ride one of these - if not you will probably injure yourself. I am not a really good rider but I am very competent and whilst I can appreciate what it can do it did feel a bit like if you make a mistake it would make you pay!
I have gone back to my standard custom ICS (camber) that I love.

I am also quite light (150 lbs) and I couldn't help thinking a heavier or way better rider would be better suited to this beast.

Hope that helps somebody out there...

One of the Best!

First I'd like to thank The Good Ride. Their reviews are spot on and they're my primary resource when looking for new gear.

I consider myself and advanced to expert freerider with 20 seasons of experience. I'm always looking for the perfect aggressive all-mountian/freeride board and the X is one of the best I've had the pleasure to ride.

Size: 164W (2010/11)
Bindings: Burton Co2 (2010/11)standard ICS disk

Initial thoughts: Slightly lighter than average but very solid. Sidewall/core material at the center was very thick. Good attention to detail. Stainless edges are a nice touch. This is my first Burton board...

Turning: Turn initiation is very precise and direct. In fact I was over applying my edges at first. Edge hold and carving is phenomenal. The board is easy to link turns and has good power out. I never felt like I was pushing the limits of the board even in the highest speed carves. One of the best qualities of this board is the ability to lay big carves while pulling quick turns if the situation calls for it.

Flex and Pop: Burton says 7 out of 10 (for response) and I would agree. Stiff but not uncomfortable. Pop is very good but quick. Timing the recoil is something that is taking some adjustment, especially having been on hybird rocker boards the last 2 seasons. If done right, the board really sends it. I also noticied the board rebounds quicker to bumps and rollers, which favors a more active riding style.

Speed: This board likes to go fast and with a number of runs in the upper 50's and one of 60 mph it's right there with my top speed runs of the season (lower 60's) on bigger and damper boards. I typically ride ~170cm boards for max stability but prefer a shorter, quicker turing board for the steeps. This is an almost perfect blend between the two. It isn't as damp as some boards I've ridden but it always feels composed and in control at the limit which was surprising given the snap and the length I was riding.

Jumping: Jumps were clean on take off and solid on landing. I'm an intermediate freestyle rider so I mainly stick to straight airs and ones with this board. I can see why burtons best riders like this board for going big.

This board favors an aggressive but fluid riding style and is really meant for an advanced rider on up. It's nice to see a no compromise cambered board on the market. The CO2 bindings are very comfortable and a great match for the board. I'd also recommend the Flux SF45 or DMCC.

In all I really like this board. It has the performance and versatility that I've been looking for for some time. The only real downside is the cost but the tech and performance is worth the coin if you can swing it.
