YES Pick Your Line $499
Intermediate to Expert Freeride to Mostly Mountain

Hybrid Camber Tapered Directional Shape
The Yes Pick Your Line expanded on the YES The Optimistic's pow skills and turned it into a good freeride board with a slight hint of all mountain in it as well.  We really enjoyed the Pick Your Line in anything from morning groomers to deep powder. This is a great board for anyone who lives for powder days but also needs to ride when there isn't any powder. We liked the huge nose, slightly tapered tail and mostly rocker hybrid camber shape.  We like the addition of a waivy side cut they call ultimate traction which we think is pretty much essential for any tapered set back board when it comes to edge hold. The ride is pretty surfy but not super surfy and this was one of the easiest powder boards we have ridden. We had fun in almost any condition you want to ride. Check out the detailed review below.

The Good Ride Take

YES Pick Your Line 156 and 161 Review by The Good Ride

Days-12

Riders- 5’11” 175lbs size 9, 5’10” 195lbs size 9 shoe, 6' 160lbs Size 10.5 boot
Boots- Burton SLX, DC Status, Nike Kaiju, Burton Ion
Bindings- Union Atlas, Burton Diode, Burton Co2, Union Force SL

We have had time on the 161 and 156. Most of it was the 156 in powder and the 161 on groomers which should of been the opposite but that's how it worked out.  Still this board carried 2 heavy riders through powder very well and groomers were a treat on the 161. We felt this to be a decent all mountain board that is a great freeride/powder board. So here is our detailed take ont the Pick Your Line.

Groomers- We mainly had powder on the YES Pick Your Line but had a few groomer days . It's fast and fun to ride in almost any condition. We didn't have high expectations because usually a powder board doesn't do that well on groomers but the Pick Your Line has that similar magic as the Nidecker Megalight that makes this incredibly fun to take out in the morning.  We centered the stance more and the board behaved like a combo of the Yes Big City and the Jones Flagship.  It had that freeride feel of the Flagship but a little more forgiving all mountain feel of the Big City.  It's great to Carve out turns and can bomb almost like the Flagship if you want to pick up speed.

Powder- The YES Pick Your Line is pretty much un-sinkable and a serious challenger as one of our favorite surf style powder boards out there for 2012. Even this little 156 handled two heavy guys in over a foot of powder and kept up with people who were riding much bigger boards.  We can only imagine what the 161 would ride like in deeper powder.  The feeling was surfy but not soo off the tail surfy that it felt squirrely.  We really liked the way the board was designed to handle powder.  The huge nose could stay a float in almost any depth of powder. We had a few pretty steep narrow chute runs and loved the way this handled.  It was nimble and it held an edge ok in some icy conditions at the top.

Turn Initiation/Carving- Really fun to and easy to initiate quick turns.  None of us felt uncomfortable making turns when riding through trees. Making big carving turns in the powder or on groomers is really fun as well.  When it comes to carving the slight Taper is noticeable when making carving turns but not terrible compared to other tapered boards we have experienced.  Still you can really lay into the best powder carve possible and a pretty good carve on groomers.

Speed- A super fast base and super damp med/stiff board made the Pick Your Line a very fast board.  The fast base keeps the speed in the flats as well as picks up speed rather quickly when you want to start going.  This is one of it's better qualities. Even though the nose is big and the shape is mostly rocker there is no chatter or clown shoe effect.

Weight- This is not light but it's not terrible on the foot.  It feels very similar to the YES The Optimistic in terms of weight.

Edge Hold- Tapered boards like this have a tendancy to wash out on the tail some times when you need it.  This taper is so minor that there is no wash out at all. The mellow magnetraction really increases edge hold and makes this borderline excellent. With a few extra waves in the side cut this will do a good job in just about any condition worth riding. It doesn't feel bottomless like the more aggressive magnetraction but when hitting really hard to icy snow the edge holds.  You never feel like you are going to wash out and it's a confidence inspiring ride.

Flex- Felt very much like a mellower version of the YES The Optimistic with the flex. It's still more on the stiff side of medium but there is room to get a playful feel out of it.

Switch- The nose and tail are pretty different so riding switch is not the same.  Still you can ride switch if you need to.  On a powder day with the stance set back it's average but when the stance is centered or close to it on a groomer day it's pretty good switch. It's still different but you don't feel like it's a tapered ride.  It feels more like a double ender.

Rails/Jibbing- Nope.... it's a little too stiff but you can slide across a few mellow boxes.

Pipe- If you center out the stance more and set it up more like an all mountain board the Pick Your line is a good amount of fun in the pipe.  The edge Hold is pretty solid and it's fun to ride the pipe with. Especially if you are a directional pipe rider.

Jumps- Of course this is great hitting a jump off natural terrain but if you center the stance and hit the park it's not bad at all.  When it comes to ollie power the PYL isn't super springy but it's not completely dead either. It wouldnt' be bad to see a little more camber. Not too much but a little more to provide some spring.

Overall we were very very impressed with the YES Pick Your Line and felt it's probably one of the better boards in a freeride/powder category for the 2012 season.  It can fit a wide range of riders and makes for one of our most recomendable freeride to mostly mountain rides.  What surprised us more than it's powder ability was it's strong all mountain characteristics that make this a great one board quiver for those that live for powder but experience every type of snow.

The Good Ride Take On YES Snowboards- Yes has been around now for a few years and has established itself as one of the better hybrid camber snowboards in the US.  We are big fans of hybrid camber because it’s stable between the feet, has good edge hold and is very floaty in powder.    The guys who designed these boards are from Burton and they had Nidecker make the boards.  Nidecker has been around since 1984 and has an amazing reputation in Europe.  They just haven’t found a way to correctly market themselves in the US which is a shame because they make great boards.  YES did have some cosmetic issues with their boards but most of that is behind them now. Our biggest complaint is that we’d like to see Women’s boards and Wide boards from YES as well.   Almost every board from YES is well thought out and usually won’t disappoint.

The Good Ride Take on Hybrid Camber
For the most part there are two types of hybrid camber that we see out there these days.

1. Mostly Rocker Hybrid Camber
This type of ride, like many boards, has camber and rocker but unlike other rockered boards the center has a mini camber. This is usually 1-3mm high, sits only between the bindings and then curves up right after. From a distance this board looks like a rocker board but when you look closer you see the little camber between the feet. This is not as loose as hybrid rocker but it’s very close. It is very stable between the feet and easy to one foot or flat base in any condition out there. Mostly Rocker Hybrid Camber is very versatile. You will see this design on anything from Freestyle to Freeride style snowboards. This will work well with all ability levels and riding styles.

hybrid-camber

2 Mostly Camber Hybrid Camber
There are all types of designs but this type usually looks like a Camber board and rides much closer to an old school Camber board.  ONe thing you will notice is usually when you step on the board the tip and tail rise up a lot more than a normal camber board will.  Some are mostly camber and others have a bit more rocker but you will always notice they have camber.  This allows for a stable, fast carve friendly feeling you get with camber but also makes it more catch free and floaty in powder.  This doesn't float effortlessly like hybrid rocker, mostly rocker hybrid camber or flat to rocker but it does better than camber.  You will mainly see this on aggressive freestyle to all mountain to freeride style snowboards.

powder board that does almost everything

5 of 5 people found the following review helpful
I wanted a powder board that was able to handle a normal day on the mountain. Goodride suggested this board and they were right. Took this thing to Park City for 3 days. The first two days were pretty much hardpacked and there was no problem carving. The last day had 6 inches of new snow. Deeper in some areas. Effortless, Rear leg burn free. It got tracked out after the 3rd run and it handled the chop. This is one board you can bring on a trip and won't let you down.
