The Good Ride TakeThe Gnu Danny Kass C2 BTX Review by The Good RideSize 158Days- 6 Riders- 5'10" 205lbs size 9 shoe, 5'10" 175lbs Size 9.5 Shoe, 6' 2" 195lbs Size 11.5 Shoe Bindings Used- Burton Cartel, Union Force, Union Atlas, Flux TT30 Boots- Rome Libertine Pureflex, Burton Shaun White, Burton Ruler, DC Park Boot Before we start a little take on Danny from the editor- Danny is the man so buy his board, boots, bindings, goggles and what ever else this Olympian is selling. Not because he rips but because he is just a good guy. I sat on a chair lift with him at the end of last season. In between us was a young girl who had no idea who he was. She complemented him on his boots and he returned the complement about her set up. She then began to tell about where she rides, where she is from, what she did yesterday and what she rides blah blah blah. He just listened and asked more questions where most people would of probably become annoyed. He finished with " you seem to really like riding. That is awesome. " If this girl finds out who she was on the chair with she'll be even more stoked on boarding. A quick look at the 2012 Gnu Danny Kass
To start off with the Danny Kass 158 we tried is pretty wide for it's size sporting a 26cm waist. One rider (me the editor) has size 9 shoes and the other rider had 9.5 shoes. That being said it was still pretty easy to handle all over the mountain. For a mid sized snowboard the Danny Kass did a pretty good job for 2 riders that have shoes a little small for the board. It just goes to show you that it's not always good to ride a board exactly to your specs and stretch it a bit. Gnu says this is a twin but it seems to have a shape more like a directional twin or even a twinish shape board. Groomers- Most of the day on the hill consisted of groomer runs and the Danny Kass did a good job. The new C2 BTX shape makes this board a lot more pleasant on the hill. The conditions were hard pack but still really good. Powder- We didn't get any powder but there were some stale stashes left from the previous storm that we hit a bit. This isn't much of a powder report but it did perform rather well in stale slushy snow. C2 BTX always performs well in powder. It's not like a tapered S-Rocker snowboard but it's far better than a camber twin with a centered stance. Turn Initiation- If you have Size 10 or 11 shoes the Danny Kass will turn on a dime but if you have smaller feet it's going to take more work. Still the hybrid camber shape will make the board easier to turn than traditional camber. We found it pretty easy to transition from edge to edge but it didn't have that lightning quick response that many of us found with the Gnu C2 BTX Billy Goat or Lib Tech TRS C2 BTX. It was more like the Lib Tech Travis Rice C2 BTX. Speed- The Danny Kass has a very fast base and is pretty stiff but their is still a bit of that feeling like a skate board with loose trucks when you point it. Also when you flat base it can be a little squirrely too. We must say that this has been really reduced compared to some of the C2 BTX boards we rode in the past so they are getting close to eliminating this problem. Weight- Not the lightest board out there but it's well built. Neither of us felt any issues with the weight on the knee and one of the riders is recovering from knee issues. Edge Hold- This board is excellent when it comes to edge hold. The MTX side cut is in the mid range but the Danny Kass would be fine on east coast ice as long as you stayed on edge. Flex- This board is really on the medium side of medium. It is a very well ballanced flex for all mountain riding. Carving- The Danny Kass can carve pretty well. The bend on the tail keeps the board from washing out. It's perfect for laying a rail to get up the half pipe or making some mellow turns but it was missing that spring out of the turn when you really try to scratch your nipples on a deep aggressive carve. Still this is pretty good when it comes to carving. Switch- Despite it's non twinish twin shape it rode switch very well. It's borderline excellent. Gnu says this is a twin but the nose and tail look different. The ride is very good switch but it didn't seem excellent. Maybe that was just in our heads but that is what we are reporting. Rails/Jibbing- You can stop through the jib park but you wouldn't want to live there. It's pretty fun though for a mid flexing board. Pipe- The one thing this board is supposed to excell in was not tested. There is no pipe up yet at our mountain. From all the indicators of how this board rides we don't see why this wouldn't rock the pipe. Jumps- The DK could handle jumps very well. It wasn't as solid as the Gnu Riders Choice but it's very springy of the lip and really is fun to jump in the park and hitting natural terrain throughout the mountain. The Gnu Danny Kass will always be a black sheep compared to some of Gnu's flagship models but some riders with mid sized feet or riders that want to put a little more effort in their turns will really enjoy this short powerful board.
The Good Ride Take on Hybrid Rocker SnowboardsThis is what we call a snowboard that has rocker in the center and then a camber bend at the tip and tail. The end result is the tip and tail are still off the ground but it helps bring some good qualities that people liked with camber to rocker. The camber usually keep’s the board from washing out when you lay into a harder carve and for the most part provide a more balanced all conditions ride compared to continuous rocker or camber. This is still nothing like camber board and it provides a loose forgiving catch free ride. Hybrid Rocker comes in all riding styles from Freestyle to Freeride and is a solid next step from where it started with continuous rocker. Hybrid Rocker is usually pretty poppy, floats well in powder, catch free and very forgiving. The one complaint is it can still be unstable flat basing or one footing in some conditions like hard pack or ice. The major companies are working on this problem and it’s been getting better since this was introduced. Most love this loose feeling and get use to the squirrely nature in certain conditions. We at The Good Ride feel this is one of the better shapes out there so give it a try.
