The Good Ride TakeThe Gnu Park Pickle Review by The Good Ride.Days on the Park Pickle- 2 Every time we see the Park Pickle on the shelf we chose something else and take it out but this time we took it out for a spin. First off we have to say the Park Pickle rides big. The 156 felt like a 159 and I (editor) kept checking the board to make sure my eyes weren't playing tricks on me. Also I kept forgetting that the Park Pickle wasn't a hybrid camber snowboard because it had a similar ride.

Groomers- We weren't expecting much outside the park but the Park Pickle quickly changed our opinion. We tried double black diamond to blue groomers and had fun just about anywhere. It's not amazing on groomers but it was pretty fun except for when it came time to flat base. The BTX shape had that same old squirrelly feel when one footing or flat basing down a path or getting off a lift. Powder- We didn't have much powder to ride but there were a few untracked lines we found to get a feel. This is the Park Pickle so the operative word here is park. Park boards aren't that great in the powder and this BTX shape doesn't seem to be really super banana'd out. That being said the Gnu Park Pickle going to do a good job if you want to take a park inspired approach to the mountain. It's just not goint to be that great when it gets too deep. Turn Initiation/Carving- The park pickle took a little more work to make tight turns than we expected but it's still on the easier side. When it came to making wider turns it was pretty fun. When we layed out a carve we were both expecting to have the board wash out but it did a pretty good job holding on. It is however not going to be that board you can make a belly scratching turn that could be expected. Speed- We were really impressed by this 156. It's a fast base and a pretty chatter free ride. It's just not fun to flat base like we sometimes like to do to increase our speed. It has the same failings that most rocker boards have. It is a little squirrely when flatbasing but on edge it's fine. That being said it has all the speed you need for the park. Weight- Like all Mervin boards the weight is close to the heavy side but the Park Pickle is very well made. Edge Hold- The Park Pickle grips anything as long as you are on edge. Flex- The Park Pickle seems to lean more to the medium side on the soft spectrum. It's still soft enough to butter the whole way down a run. Switch- The twin shape with an asymmetrical side cut makes for a very easy ride switch. If you are not great at switch riding the asymmetrical side cut makes it a little easier to ride switch. Rails/Jibbing- The Pickle will slide very well over just about anything and that is what it's made for. The BTX seems more flat than other BTX boards which makes it a little easier to slide across more complex rails and jibs. Pipe- The edge hold is soo good that it's hard to have a bad time in the pipe with the pickle. There are better boards out there but the Pickle does a good job. Jumps- Like the Pipe the Pickle does a good job and will be pretty fun hitting the roller coasters in the park. It also has a pretty decent spring if you ollie around the mountain without the aid of a ramp.
All in all the Park Pickle was a bit of a surprise because we quite frankly thought it would suck riding around the mountain but it was pretty fun. We would suggest this for someone who likes to ride mainly the park but occasionally ventures out to the other side of the fence. The Good Ride Take on Continuous Rocker This is where it all started or re-started in the Mid 2000’s. In the beginning Continuous Rocker was mainly for park and powder. Today it's still pretty much made for the same 2 functions. There are a few boards that are made for all mountain to freeride use but most of those have migrated to hybrid shapes. Continuous Rocker helps you maintain a catch free forgiving ride which is excellent for beginner riders or those who ride at slower playful speeds through the park. Almost every one we have tried has to be on edge or it will wander giving you that squirrely feeling like a skateboard with loose trucks. The biggest issue is it isn't very stable flat basing or one footing in firmer snow. Continuous rocker is for the most part really poppy and helps you generate your own air. There are many styles of this shape so this could be a good choice for beginners, park rats and people who only ride powder.
