The Good Ride TakeThe Ride Machete Review by The Good RideSize 158 So the Ride Machete is a board we have been wanting to try for a while but for some reason it is very difficult to find a demo or get Ride to send us any boards. A big thanks to P3 in Mammoth for getting this board for demo. Ride's inability to provide demo boards in our area or work with us to ride their boards led us to beleive that they are hiding something since almost every other company goes out of their way to help us review boards. Despite this we had a pretty good time on the Ride Machete. The board performed well in just about any situation except in the jib park but there was that same dull feeling that is synonomous with many ride boards that most of us at the good ride aren't fans of. Still it was a smooth damp ride for those that like to go big or ride groomers fast regular and switch.
Groomers- This stiff twin does a good job on the groomers. The Ride Machete is damp enough to make for a pretty good ride on a groomer in almost every condition except for ice. We were expecting less from the Machete in this category but it was pretty fun. Powder- The Machete is a twin with a centered stance. The ride rocker does not have an effortless float as some of the other rocker boards out there with a more pronounced bend. The mostly flat Machete planes very well when it gets going and does a better job than camber but it doesn't have that free of rear leg burn feel. Turn Initiation- The Machete takes a bit more work to turn than many boards in this category. It doesn't take a lot of work but it takes more than many hybrid camber, hybrid rocker and rocker snowboards we have ridden. This is what makes the Machete a bit more fun on groomers but not as easy to micro adjust in the park. Still many people will like this feel when it comes to turning. Speed- The Ride Machete reminded us of the damp dull feel that we had with the Ride TMS. It doesn't make for a lively ride but the speed is very impressive for a freestyle twin. It makes for a board that is comfortable straight lining a steep run and of course having the speed and stability to hit a big kicker. Weight- The Machete is pretty thick for a twin and because of that it's closer to the heavy side of things. Edge Hold- Ride calls there edge's on the Machete "cleave edges" It doesn't really have a variation in side cut like the Never Summer boards have but this big edge does have a pretty good grip on the snow. We had a tiny sprinkling of snow but under that it was pretty hard. It was also windy so there were many exposed spots all over the hill and the Machete held it's edges over all terrain today. Flex- Not that soft. This is definitely a mid flexing board that is pretty hard to butter around on. Carving- The Machete can carve pretty well for a twin. The edge hold is good and the medium flex allows for the Machete to make a pretty good carve. We like that the rocker doesn't start for a bit after the binding so the tail doesn't wash out. You can lean into a carve but it doesn't have the ability to spring through the turn like many camber and some hybrid shapes can. Switch- The Ride Machete is a true twin so of course it will ride the same way switch as it does regular. Rails and Jibbing- You can slide across a box but this is far from ideal for hitting a rail or lapping the jib park. There are many better boards out there for this. Pipe- Pretty fun in the pipe. It has enough edge hold and stiffness to handle the pipe. The turned up edges make for a pretty forgiving entry. We have had better experiences in the pipe with boards like the Gnu Riders Choice and Salomon Official . That being said this is one of the better almost flat camber/rocker snowboards experienced in the pipe. Jumps- Riding around the mountain and ollieng over natural terrain we found the Machete to be semi springy. The whole pop-rod tech must help but it still doesn't give you that spring many boards with camber or hybrid shapes can offer. Now hitting jumps in the terrain park is another story. The Ride Machete is made for this and has enough flex to handle the big kickers. It's also not super catchy if you land wrong. The Good Ride Take on Ride They are from the same parent company as K2 and have many similarities in terms of board design and company policy. Ride’s customer service is better than K2’s and actually has a # to call on their site instead of just an on-line form. Ride, like K2 seems almost secretive when it comes to having third party entities like us or end users like you review their gear. So many companies like Burton, Rome, YES, Arbor ect. are really proud of their gear and try to do everything they can to get you to ride them. Ride seems to do the bare minimum and despite its large size has very few demo products. Their policy seems to be if you want to try it you have to buy it. Ride chooses mainly to work with variations of flat/rocker snowboards but has recently started to work with hybrid camber. Their hybrid camber is different than YES and Rossignol and leans more on the flat camber side of things but we still like to see them go in this direction. We have found that we like some of their shapes but other boards we weren’t fans of . Like K2 Ride’s rocker shapes always seem to be pretty flat between the feet and it makes for one of the better rocker set up out there. Ride makes pretty good bindings and many people swear by them. They have more parts than most bindings but all in all they do a very good job despite the fact that a lot of the binding is metal. We are big fans of the canted foot bed but can’t say we are a fan of their Contraband strap system. They make good boots that last for a long time but boots are so personal all we can speak to is their build and longevity.
