Burton Process Flying V Snowboard Review

burton-process-157
Burton Process Flying V $419
Beginner to Advanced All Mountain Freestyle
Hybrid Rocker Directional Twin Shape

The Process is a somewhat mellow all mountain freestyle board for lighter riders looking to take the park ride to the mountain.  Here is a quick history
2011 Burton Process V Rocker-This was introduced as the continuous rocker alternative to the camber Burton Process. This makes it more of a loose jibby all mountain freestyle ride. This was more of a park ride with a good feel for sliding around the mountain but it was missing edge hold that many rocker boards had.
2012 Burton Process Flying V- Burton kept the camber version as well but changed the rocker version to hybrid rocker that they call V-Rocker.  This changed up the ride quite a bit because it now holds out on a carve a little better.  It went from rough to average and the ride is a little more of a balanced all mountain freestyle ride.  It's also now has a Twin Like Directional shape instead of a directional twin shape.  This makes the Process V-Rocker more like a lower end version of the Burton Joystick. It's still missing edge hold but now it's a bit more poppy and is OK but not great venturing out of the park.

The Good Ride Take

Here is the difference between most hybrd rocker boards and Burton's Flying V Rocker.  The best way to do this is in a picture.

Here is what most people are doing with hybrid rocker.  There is rocker in the middle and then the camber doesn't make it all the way back down.

Hybrid-Camber-Description

As you can see with Burton there is one more rocker bend than the hybrid Rocker most people have out there.

The Good Ride Take on Hybrid Rocker Snowboards

This is what we call a snowboard that has rocker in the center and then a camber bend at the tip and tail.  The end result is the tip and tail are still off the ground but it helps bring some good qualities that people liked with camber to rocker. The camber usually keep’s the board from washing out when you lay into a harder carve and for the most part provide a more balanced all conditions ride compared to continuous rocker or camber. This is still nothing like camber board and it provides a loose forgiving catch free ride. Hybrid Rocker comes in all riding styles from Freestyle to Freeride and is a solid next step from where it started with continuous rocker. Hybrid Rocker is usually pretty poppy, floats well in powder, catch free and very forgiving. The one complaint is it can still be unstable flat basing or one footing in some conditions like hard pack or ice. The major companies are working on this problem and it’s been getting better since this was introduced. Most love this loose feeling and get use to the squirrely nature in certain conditions. We at The Good Ride feel this is one of the better shapes out there so give it a try.

The Good Ride Take on Burton

Burton is huge. They have developed or acquired most of the technology that we use today. Burton is one of the only companies that can provide you with everything you need to snowboard from boards to beanies.  Burton even owns arguably the best surfboard company Channel Islands because Jake likes to surf.  They are like the Yankees of snowboarding because they can always outspend their competition to win.

The positives- Burton provides more products for each gear/clothing/accessory category than any other company.  Burton has possibly the best customer service in the snowboarding industry.  Burton continuously spends more money than almost any company to develop new tech or just make what they have better.   Burton sponsors more pro’s and get’s more high level user feed back than any other company.  They have some of the best boots, bindings and boards in the industry.  They also have great clothing.
The Negatives- Because Burton spends so much money on sponsorship and tech they have to pass this cost along to the products they sell.   They relentlessly continue to jack up the prices every year.  You are almost always going to get a good product from Burton’s higher end line but some mid to low level products don’t stack up to the competition in the same price range.  Burton always tries to make proprietary tech like the channel tech and 3 hole binding tech so you can only ride Burton Gear which sucks! We wish they wouldn’t act like the Microsoft of snowboarding.

The bottom line is Burton is the 800lb patriarch of our industry that makes good stuff and backs it up with good customer service.  The snowboarding world owes soo much to them but at the same time they can be very frustrating when it comes to price and proprietary technology.
