Arbor Element RX Snowboard Review

Intermediate to Expert All Mountain Freestyle

Directional Twin Continuous Rocker Shape
Sometimes you pay a price in ride quality for a unique look but this is not the case with Arbor.  The Arbor Element comes in 2 models. The Arbor Element CX (camber) and the Arbor Element RX (rocker). The Element RX is not just a rocker version of the Element CX.  The Arbor Element RX is more like a stiffer more all mountain version of the Arbor Coda than a rocker version of the Element CX. The old school camber is going to have a more aggressive fun to carve ride for those that like the old school feel but the RX is going to be a lot better in powder.  The edge hold of the Element Rocker (RX) is just as good or even better than the CX thanks to the extension of the edge between each foot.  It's got some spring, it's good in powder for a centered stance twin, is fun to ride all over the mountain and is very forgiving.  If you are really into carving out a turn regular or switch then the Element CX might be the call because carving on the RX isn't there yet.  When it comes to speed the Element RX is an acquired taste over the camber version but after a while you get use to it's less than stable feel.  We still prefer the speed and carving from the CX but like everything else we like better with the RX. Still it's up to you to decide what is more important to you.  All in all the Arbor Element RX provides a solid rocker ride that does a great job in all conditions.  The Element RX changed very little in 2012 from 2011 and both are great boards.  All the tech is the same and the ride is pretty similar.  There were just some minor refinements.

The Good Ride Take

The Good Ride Take on Continuous Rocker
This is where it all started or re-started in the Mid 2000’s. In the beginning Continuous Rocker was mainly for park and powder. Today it's still pretty much made for the same 2 functions. There are a few boards that are made for all mountain to freeride use but most of those have migrated to hybrid shapes.  Continuous Rocker helps you maintain a catch free forgiving ride which is excellent for beginner riders or those who ride at slower playful speeds through the park.  Almost every one we have tried has to be on edge or it will wander giving you that squirrely feeling like a skateboard with loose trucks.  The biggest issue is it isn't very stable flat basing or one footing in firmer snow.  Continuous rocker is for the most part really poppy and helps you generate your own air.  There are many styles of this shape so this could be a good choice for beginners, park rats and people who only ride powder.

THE MOUNTAIN SYSTEM

A FUSION OF INTERDEPENDENT TECHNOLOGIES THAT SUPPORT SUCCESSFUL ROCKER PERFORMANCE

Make no mistake, rocker represents a completely different approach to snowboard design.  It requires a total rethink of long held ideas of how flex, materials, and shape interact and affect performance.  In response, Arbor developed The System to address the new physics of riding rocker.  In our opinion, the award winning “System” has proven itself to be the best rocker design yet offered.

OTHER FEATURES & TECH

THE TOPSHEET

WOOD POWER PLY - Arbor’s wood Power Ply works like a 3rd layer of fiberglass - during construction resin locks the dense natural fibers in place, creating a composite layer that structurally enhances a board for added return and improved durability, while allowing for important weight reduction. The Power Ply technology allows Arbor to reduce our overall reliance on chemically treated fiberglass and petroleum-based resin by up to 20%.  The Power Ply is produced using sustainably sourced, natural wood veneer. The variance of real wood grain creates a one-of-a-kind look on each board made with this technology.

BIO-FILM - Every board in the Arbor line is now built with an ultra thin protective top foil made using 30% caster bean based bio-plastic.  This top sheet protects the board from damage caused by loose bindings, out-of-control skiers, or other unforeseen impacts.  Its natural glossy nature also eliminates the need for environmentally harmful clear coats.

WOOD CORE

VOODOO CORE - Arbor’s second lightest and most versatile core, designed for mountain and park level durability; built with a 100% FSC certified, sustainably produced “TDS” poplar. TDS is a specially selected lighter grade of wood.

BASE

ROCKET BASE - A higher molecular weight, wax-infused sintered base that provides unmatched durability and speed

SIDECUT

UNBLENDED PROGRESSIVE - Arbor’s unblended tri-radial sidecut technology; better known as “Grip Tech.”  Please see “The System” Section for more details.

SIDEWALLS

RHYTHM RAILS - Made from an advanced blend of ABS and urethane; delivers durability, a clean, acoustically damp ride, and solid edge performance.

GLASS BALANCING

MIXED GLASSING - A triax over biax lay-up that’s best for versatile on-mountain and park riding

REINFORCING

CARBON FIBER STRUT - Inserting carbon fiber down the center of a board creates a compression strut that livens up a board's longitudinal flex and improves durability without affecting turn-ability, spin initiation, or landing recoverability - designed for mixed mountain and park performance.

INSERTS

2X4 14-PACKS - An insert system that provides a wide stance range and amazing micro adjustability; used to create Arbor’s:

Mountain Stance - Max Stance: 24.4" / 62cm

SHADOW FLEX

MEDIUM SHADOW - Delivers mountain and park performance.  A slight tapered thinning of the core profile between the bindings, improves: turn and spin initiation; tracking in mixed conditions, on the flats, and during landings; and performance on rails, boxes, and naturals.

EDGES

RECYCLED STEEL - Built with hardened steel edges made with 60% recycled steel; provides maximum edge performance.

2-YEAR WARRANTY

Every board in the Arbor line comes with a two-year warranty on material and workmanship.  We stand by everything we make.

Arbor Element RX 2011

The expansion of our System Series will be led by the new Element RX, which brings Arbor’s cornerstone roots design to an all-mountain rocker offering; feeding the ride-it-all addiction of a growing reverse camber community with Element level style and performance - on mountain, in the park, and beyond.
