The Good Ride TakeA Quick Look at the Ride Highlife UL
The Good Ride Take on Ride They are from the same parent company as K2 and have many similarities in terms of board design and company policy. Ride’s customer service is better than K2’s and actually has a # to call on their site instead of just an on-line form. Ride, like K2 seems almost secretive when it comes to having third party entities like us or end users like you review their gear. So many companies like Burton, Rome, YES, Arbor ect. are really proud of their gear and try to do everything they can to get you to ride them. Ride seems to do the bare minimum and despite its large size has very few demo products. Their policy seems to be if you want to try it you have to buy it. Ride chooses mainly to work with variations of flat/rocker snowboards but has recently started to work with hybrid camber. Their hybrid camber is different than YES and Rossignol and leans more on the flat camber side of things but we still like to see them go in this direction. We have found that we like some of their shapes but other boards we weren’t fans of . Like K2 Ride’s rocker shapes always seem to be pretty flat between the feet and it makes for one of the better rocker set up out there. Ride makes pretty good bindings and many people swear by them. They have more parts than most bindings but all in all they do a very good job despite the fact that a lot of the binding is metal. We are big fans of the canted foot bed but can’t say we are a fan of their Contraband strap system. They make good boots that last for a long time but boots are so personal all we can speak to is their build and longevity.

The Highlife UL (11/12) is a board I've been looking for for some time to add to my quiver. My daily is a custom x w/ diode est and with few exceptions couldn't be more pleased. There are, however, times when I wish I had more float and better handling in the chop. The Highlife has answered the call and then some... Overall I'm pleasantly surprised with the HL, and have few if any legitimate complaints. Positives: -Rocker in the nose provides great float, even in just a few inches of snow. The ride is surfy, much like that of a tapered board, but without the drawbacks of taper. -The construction provides a very damp and controlled but not dead ride. Good return energy out of turns. -Relatively stiff (slightly stiffer than my cx) yet easy to ride in most conditions. Holds an edge well and is fairly intuitive. Easy to flatbase and straightline. Negatives: -Can be a little difficult to access the pop. Could be the flex but I just don't get the ollie that I get out of the CX. I admit some of this could be the bindings which is a big reason why I like the CX. There is plenty of out-of-turn snap so I think it's just a matter of getting into the flex. -I prefer a relatively stiff nose but the carbon heavy nose in the HL can transmit some feedback on abrupt hits. It isn't bad but it throws off the flow at higher speeds. These are minimal complaints though and look to be addressed to some degree in the 12/13 model. In all this is a really solid choice for the all mountain rider that's on the freeride end of the scale. It may be too damp for some but I prefer this in a board meant to charge. The hybrid all-mountain design is my favorite out of the many rocker designs I've tried over the last few years. With all the freestyle boards out there it's nice to see a board that caters to the aggressive mountain rider. Thanks Ride! |
