Hybrid Rocker (Flying V) Directional Shape
We thought the Burton Vapor was way too expensive but the Burton Method is just ridiculous!  This board should perform sexual favors on the chair lift for this price. Ok enough bitching. The point of these ultra mega expensive boards is to put new tech into play so eventually it will trickle down to the masses. The Burton Method is an amazing board in some ways and still lacking in other ways.  For 2011 the Method made only one major change to give it  more of it's own personality and takes a step away from the Vapor.  It went from a camber shape similar to the Vapor to a hybrid rocker shape similar to the Burton Custom Flying V Rocker.  Flying V Rocker really changes the ride. The Method won't have that ultra stable feel flat basing at higher speeds like the old camber but it makes the method better in powder, more playful and easier to initiate a turn. The edge hold generated by the "frost bite" tech is lacking and closer to the bottom side of Average.  We'd really like to see an improved version of "frost bite" because right now the Method and all Burton rocker boards are only fun in good conditions.  If you want flat out aggressive speed, better edge hold and an excellent pipe board then go for the 2010 Method or the Burton Vapor.  If you want a more playful catch free ride that is better in powder then go for the 2011 or 2012 Method.  We can't in good taste recommend something this expensive but we will say its a great board for those who ride in good conditions and need to have the best.  The 2012 Burton Method changed up the core from aluminum to wood which we like over the 2011 Method.  It's shape and riding style is very similar but there seems to be a little more pop and playfulness.

The Good Ride Take

Here is the difference between most hybrd rocker boards and Burton's Flying V Rocker.  The best way to do this is in a picture.

Here is what most people are doing with hybrid rocker.  There is rocker in the middle and then the camber doesn't make it all the way back down.

Hybrid-Camber-Description

As you can see with Burton there is one more rocker bend than the hybrid Rocker most people have out there.

The Good Ride Take on Hybrid Rocker Snowboards

This is what we call a snowboard that has rocker in the center and then a camber bend at the tip and tail.  The end result is the tip and tail are still off the ground but it helps bring some good qualities that people liked with camber to rocker. The camber usually keep’s the board from washing out when you lay into a harder carve and for the most part provide a more balanced all conditions ride compared to continuous rocker or camber. This is still nothing like camber board and it provides a loose forgiving catch free ride. Hybrid Rocker comes in all riding styles from Freestyle to Freeride and is a solid next step from where it started with continuous rocker. Hybrid Rocker is usually pretty poppy, floats well in powder, catch free and very forgiving. The one complaint is it can still be unstable flat basing or one footing in some conditions like hard pack or ice. The major companies are working on this problem and it’s been getting better since this was introduced. Most love this loose feeling and get use to the squirrely nature in certain conditions. We at The Good Ride feel this is one of the better shapes out there so give it a try.

The Good Ride Take on Burton

Burton is huge. They have developed or acquired most of the technology that we use today. Burton is one of the only companies that can provide you with everything you need to snowboard from boards to beanies.  Burton even owns arguably the best surfboard company Channel Islands because Jake likes to surf.  They are like the Yankees of snowboarding because they can always outspend their competition to win.

The positives- Burton provides more products for each gear/clothing/accessory category than any other company.  Burton has possibly the best customer service in the snowboarding industry.  Burton continuously spends more money than almost any company to develop new tech or just make what they have better.   Burton sponsors more pro’s and get’s more high level user feed back than any other company.  They have some of the best boots, bindings and boards in the industry.  They also have great clothing.
The Negatives- Because Burton spends so much money on sponsorship and tech they have to pass this cost along to the products they sell.   They relentlessly continue to jack up the prices every year.  You are almost always going to get a good product from Burton’s higher end line but some mid to low level products don’t stack up to the competition in the same price range.  Burton always tries to make proprietary tech like the channel tech and 3 hole binding tech so you can only ride Burton Gear which sucks! We wish they wouldn’t act like the Microsoft of snowboarding.

The bottom line is Burton is the 800lb patriarch of our industry that makes good stuff and backs it up with good customer service.  The snowboarding world owes soo much to them but at the same time they can be very frustrating when it comes to price and proprietary technology.

METHOD

Lofty science meets laboratory madness.

We gave R&D an unlimited budget to advance the state of the snowboard art. It got intense fast, but all the aerospace materials and space travel they expensed resulted in a concept that pushes weightlessness into uncharted territories. Harnessing exotic materials and formulas that are untouchable in the industry, the Method fuses rocker and camber with high-end precision for a ride that seemingly hovers down the mountain.

2011 Burton Method

The ultimate riding machine.

In search of the next level in weightlessness and performance, we gave our R&D team free reign to explore exotic materials and constructions never before considered for snowboarding. When the smoke cleared, the Method™ was born and introduced our lightest composite board matrix to date. Pushing the envelope even further, this year’s addition of Flying V™ means the best of rocker and camber combined for a ride that’s unlike anything you’ve felt before it.

NEW Flying V

Take flight with V-Rocker’s next evolution. A premium blend of camber and rocker performance, Flying V™ offers the best of both worlds. Rocker overall, including between and outside your feet, enhances playfulness and float through pow. Underneath your feet, subtle camber zones combine with Frostbite Edges, EGD, and The Channel to focus edge-control for crisp snap, added pop, and power through turns.

2010 Burton Method

Limit eraser.

If you were handed the keys to Shangri La, what would you build? This was the question we asked our R&D team and the Method™ was their answer. With every resource and no restriction, the result is a paradigm shift in high performance. Using materials in entirely new ways, finely woven carbon strands, titanium edges, and strategically placed S2 glass results in our lightest board yet. When someone asked, “If we can, why don’t we?” No one argued.
