Burton Nug, Women's Nug and Me Nug- Continuous Rocker Twin

Directional Nug- Continuous Rocker Directional Twin
2011 Good Wood Award Winner
The Burton Nug is a peculiar but very fun quiver board.  It's not for everyone but if you are into trying different boards then you should definitely give this a try.  It's a very little board that rides big. Like Burton says ride the Nug 8-10cm smaller than your normal board and we agree. Being soo small the Nug had a slightly strange feel at first but after a few turns it becomes pretty fun.  As you would expect the Nug is really easy to throw around.  It's not really an ideal all mountain board but this is definitely a really fun quiver board.  Despite its short size it can ride out of the park rather well.  To us it's the kind of board that is unique, interesting, fun to play around with and learn new tricks on.  In many ways it makes us feel like better riders. The 2012 Burton Nug Line went Nug crazy. Burton made a Women's Nug (awesome), the Directional Nug (possibly overkill) and the Me Nug (overkill). So aside from the new nug's the 2011 Nug is very similar to the 2012 Twin Nug. All years and models have the Squeezebox tech except for the Women's Nug. Check out the Detailed Review Below.

The Good Ride Take

The Burton Nug Snowboard Review By The Good Ride

Size 146
Days- 1
Conditions- hard Pack
Bindings- Malavita EST with Hinge TEch
2 Riders- 5'10", 200lbs size 9 shoe.  5'11" 175lbs, size 8.5 shoe

The Burton Nug is an incredibly fun board and this super small size is not as gimicky as you would think.  None of us would want this as a primary but we all would love to have this as a quiver board.  Both of us were very impressed with the big board performance this little 146 offered.

Groomers- The Burton Nug was fun at moderate to high speeds as well making this for a better board than we would of thought.  The small size and rocker don't make for a great groomer board but this was pretty surprising.  The V-Rocker or continuous rocker on the Nug seems to be less curvy and more on the flatter side but that could be because it's so small. Either way it wasn't as loose between the feet as many continous rocker or hybrid rocker boards are. It still was catch free but it just felt a little more stable between the feet and this to us was pretty cool.

Powder- Not so good.  Just too small but it would float better than a camber version of this board.

Turn Initiation/Carving- Very Very Easy to turn. The rocker and the exceptionally short length makes for super easy turning. It's not bad to carve in good conditions but it's lack of edge hold isn't there when it comes to harder snow.

Speed- Peter Straight lined a pretty steep hill and got to 65mph on the GPS Goggles he was wearing but Peter is not right in the head.  Still this board is not made for speed like that.  It's not supper chattery but its not great at moderate to high speeds.

Weight- Light and due to it's very small size is almost un-noticable on the chair.

Edge Hold- Lacking here like all Burton rocker boards.  We felt the board slip under us numerous times on edge in hard snow.  It is our biggest complaint about this unique board.  We'd like to see a little more edge hold like many companies provide for their reverse camber boards but at least there is a 1/2 MM extension at each foot.  "Frostbite" might not be the best description but at least there is some additional edge hold over a standard side cut.

Flex- Soft is the name of the Nugs game but it wasn't as soft as we thought it would be.  There are many Burton boards that ride small and this small board rides big.  Both testers were on the heavy end or over (editor) the weight scale for the 146 but it did a great job supporting both of us.

Switch- Excellent because it's a true twin with a centered stance.  The Directional Nug isn't as good but it's still not bad.

Rails/Jibbing- A little board like this is awesome in a jib park.  The Nug has a pretty flat profile for a rocker board.  It adds to the small size and we found it terribly easy to hit even more difficult rails than we would normally hit.

Pipe- Not ideal.  It's just missing the edge hold for good pipe riding. If The Nug had better edge hold this could be pretty interesting.

Jumps- This was pretty fun generating your own air and pretty fun hitting just about any size kicker.  It's so easy to spin on this board. Even without the Malavita EST bindings that have "hinge tech" (makes it easier to ollie) the Nugs were pretty fun to pop on.

All in all the Nug was a surprise to us.  It's more than just a gimmick board and it's really fun to ride on.  If you have the cash this is a fun board to add to the quiver.  Or if you are looking to mix it up for a year or so with the Nug you will be pretty happy with it's all mountain freestyle performance in many conditions. We feel the Twin is the way to go but the direcitonal isn't that much different.

The Good Ride Take on Continuous Rocker
This is where it all started or re-started in the Mid 2000’s. In the beginning Continuous Rocker was mainly for park and powder. Today it's still pretty much made for the same 2 functions. There are a few boards that are made for all mountain to freeride use but most of those have migrated to hybrid shapes.  Continuous Rocker helps you maintain a catch free forgiving ride which is excellent for beginner riders or those who ride at slower playful speeds through the park.  Almost every one we have tried has to be on edge or it will wander giving you that squirrely feeling like a skateboard with loose trucks.  The biggest issue is it isn't very stable flat basing or one footing in firmer snow.  Continuous rocker is for the most part really poppy and helps you generate your own air.  There are many styles of this shape so this could be a good choice for beginners, park rats and people who only ride powder.

The Good Ride Take on Burton

Burton is huge. They have developed or acquired most of the technology that we use today. Burton is one of the only companies that can provide you with everything you need to snowboard from boards to beanies.  Burton even owns arguably the best surfboard company Channel Islands because Jake likes to surf.  They are like the Yankees of snowboarding because they can always outspend their competition to win.

The positives- Burton provides more products for each gear/clothing/accessory category than any other company.  Burton has possibly the best customer service in the snowboarding industry.  Burton continuously spends more money than almost any company to develop new tech or just make what they have better.   Burton sponsors more pro’s and get’s more high level user feed back than any other company.  They have some of the best boots, bindings and boards in the industry.  They also have great clothing.
The Negatives- Because Burton spends so much money on sponsorship and tech they have to pass this cost along to the products they sell.   They relentlessly continue to jack up the prices every year.  You are almost always going to get a good product from Burton’s higher end line but some mid to low level products don’t stack up to the competition in the same price range.  Burton always tries to make proprietary tech like the channel tech and 3 hole binding tech so you can only ride Burton Gear which sucks! We wish they wouldn’t act like the Microsoft of snowboarding.

The bottom line is Burton is the 800lb patriarch of our industry that makes good stuff and backs it up with good customer service.  The snowboarding world owes soo much to them but at the same time they can be very frustrating when it comes to price and proprietary technology.

FEATURES
V-Rocker

Continuous rocker between your feet and in front of your feet towards the tip and tail creates catch-free playfulness and improved float from peak to park. Frostbite Edges enhance power and grip, balancing the board’s overall loose and forgiving feel.

Twin Shape

The shape is perfectly symmetrical for a balanced ride that’s equally versatile when ridden regular or switch. Jib, spin, stomp, and butter with a greater balance of freestyle mobility and cat-like stability no matter which way you point it.

Super Fly® Core

Lightened up and loaded with pop, this vertical sandwich of hard and soft woods saves weight and improves snap and response. Further optimized for float in our freeride focused boards, and strength in our park-focused boards.

Negative Core Profile

The team favorite! Thinner sections of core between the bindings soften flex and torsion for a more playful feel and added foot control that’s perfect for everything from park to pow.

Grip and Rip™ Tune

The standard for slicing and dicing the entire mountain.

Squeezebox
NEW Scoop

This exaggerated tip and tail scooping turns up the edges for a looser, more forgiving feel that adds catch-free fun when riding everything from a knee-high box to neck-deep pow.

Infinite Ride™

This Burton-exclusive technology allows us to maximize pop and strength by overbuilding the board, then putting it in a machine that breaks the board in for you. Whether you choose to ride Springloaded, Rocker or Camber, rest assured that with Infinite Ride™ your board will maintain its flex, pop, and feel from the first day forward, season after season. Infinite Ride—ensuring the core values for years to come.

The Channel

Now on more boards and evolved for greater performance, the Channel(M6) has staked its claim in the marketplace as snowboarding’s most direct connection. Focusing power through a central connection that evenly distributes energy for added rebound and snap, it also lets you easily micro-adjust your stance width and angles. The addition of M6 means we’re using a standardized hardware size that improves upon performance and ease-of-use, and allows for compatibility with all Burton bindings as well as bindings from select competitors, making it a choice for any rider.

Twin Flex

The flex is perfectly symmetrical from tip to tail for a balanced ride that’s equally versatile regular or switch, frontside or backside.

Dualzone™ EGD™

The wood grain is positioned along the toe and heel edges, perpendicular to the rest of the wood core, for superior edge hold and added strength.

Triax™

Versatile flex and response for everything from mini to mega shred.

Frostbite Edges

Edges beneath your bindings extend out slightly for tremendous edge-hold on hard, icy conditions. Powerful when you need them, playful when you don’t, Frostbite Edges are hungry for hard-pack while remaining ever forgiving in softer conditions.

10:45™

Aggressive rippers take note. 10:45’s extra-meaty, dual angle geometry results in bomber impact absorption.

NEW Jumper Cables

Jumper Cables on the NEW Process V-Rocker, NEW Déjà Vu V-Rocker, Blunt, Hate, and Social are ultra-light carbon stringers that radiate energy outward from your feet towards the tip and tail. Beyond adding amplitude to your ollies, they also create more snap when powering through turns. For maximum flight, the Jumper Cables Hi-Voltage on the Joystick, Hero, Hero Limited, and Lip-Stick use carbonated rods for ultra-electrified pop and performance.

Pro-Tip™

A tapered tip and tail thickness reduces swing weight for easier mobility.

Hi-Speed Quad Package

Adding performance, speed, and strength while reducing weight, with results even a novice will immediately appreciate. You will find many of our team riders on these boards.

Sintered Base

Durable and highly porous, get added durability and superior wax absorption for greater overall glide.
