The Good Ride TakeThe Lib Tech Attack Banana Review by The Good Ride
Size 159 The Attack Banana is a nice addition to the Lib Tech Quiver. It sits right in between the TRS and the Skate Banana in terms of performance. Many who felt that some of the Mervin boards MTX cut was too grippy will like the very mellow magnetraction side cut of the Attack Banana. We felt it to be a playful fun board and here is the break down. I (editor) only had one day on the board in varying conditions. The morning was smooth and icy in some spots. The mid morning was soft and slightly rutted and the afternoon was slushy and slow. A Quick look at the 2012 Lib Tech Attack Banana EC2 Power Banana
Groomers/Carving- Big surprise here. I thought the attack banana would be lacking like the Skate Banana but it was pretty fun. It's not ideal to attack groomers at higer speeds but it was fun to play around on them and the tip/tail had enough bend to grip into a carve and prevent you from washing out like the Skate Banana does. Powder- No Powder here but you can tell by the rocker that this will be fun taking a freestyle approach to moderate powder. Wouldn't like it in the deep stuff compared to some other boards out there. Turn Initiation- Just as easy to get from edge to edge as the Skate Banana but more fun to do so. Speed- The Attack Banana has a fast base like all Lib Boards but we felt some chatter at moderate speeds over the varied conditions I experienced riding that day. If you want speed there are many other Mervin boards that can out perform the Attack Banana but I was still impressed with it's performance compared to the Skate Banana. Weight- Like all Mervin boards they are well built and very reliable but this hapens at an increase in weight. It's still nothing terrible. Edge Hold- I did not try a brand new board. The Edges seemed to be in good condition and so we think this is how the board rides but we can't say for sure. The Attack Banana seems to have one of the most mellow MTX side cuts of any board out there. If you combine that with the softer flex it makes for one of the only boards from Mervin that we feel has good edge hold instead of excellent edge hold. I felt a few slips in the icy morning but still liked the style of this ride compared to many of the more grippy Mervin boards. Flex- Closer to the softer side of medium. I was surprised at how it did not press or butter anywhere close to the Skate Banana. It seemed to have the same flex throughout the entire board. I would of liked to see it a bit softer at the tip and tail but then it might chatter clown shoe style so this complaint might create a new complaint. Switch- This is a twin so it was just as easy to ride switch as it was regular. Rails/Jibbing- Not as ideal as I thought it would be. The Skate Banana was much better here. Pipe- I spent a lot of time in the pipe on this board. The day before I rode a board that rocked the pipe so it was not as much fun to ride throughout the pipe as the day before. The loose feel between the feel and the less than excellent edge hold made the Attack Banana ride the pipe adequately. As the pipe got soft my confidence went up but the first few passes on the icy walls in the morning were not that much fun. Jumps- The Attack Banana is pretty poppy and it was fun to generate your own air. There are more poppy boards but this is definitely in the top rung. Hitting small kickers was much more fun than the pipe. All in all the Attack Banana was not what I thought it would be but made for a pretty fun ride. We'd like to see this technology, especially the mellow MTX cut introduced into some of the other boards in their line up.
The Good Ride Take on Hybrid Rocker SnowboardsThis is what we call a snowboard that has rocker in the center and then a camber bend at the tip and tail. The end result is the tip and tail are still off the ground but it helps bring some good qualities that people liked with camber to rocker. The camber usually keep’s the board from washing out when you lay into a harder carve and for the most part provide a more balanced all conditions ride compared to continuous rocker or camber. This is still nothing like camber board and it provides a loose forgiving catch free ride. Hybrid Rocker comes in all riding styles from Freestyle to Freeride and is a solid next step from where it started with continuous rocker. Hybrid Rocker is usually pretty poppy, floats well in powder, catch free and very forgiving. The one complaint is it can still be unstable flat basing or one footing in some conditions like hard pack or ice. The major companies are working on this problem and it’s been getting better since this was introduced. Most love this loose feeling and get use to the squirrely nature in certain conditions. We at The Good Ride feel this is one of the better shapes out there so give it a try.
Company InformationLibTech Attack Banana BTX Snowboard 2011New Technology Available Now! Seattle, WA – The Lib Tech experiMENTAL division continues to attack conventional snowboard design stagnation with innovation and fun. The Lib Tech Attack Banana is the latest evolution of revolutionary industry changing Banana Technology (rocker between your feet) and “Innovation of the Year winning” C2 Banana Camber combo. The Attack Banana features Steven Cobb’s EC2 elliptical camber banana combo. Why would you want this? Because it mindlessly rips all terrain and snow conditions in both directions from your centered freestyle stance. The elliptical camber creates a unique “pressure map” and performance characteristics that are halfway between the original Banana and the aggressive C2 Power Banana geometry that Travis Rice likes so much. This board is the perfect design compromise that will leave you anything but compromised when it comes to all terrain freestyle performance. Floats in powder, carves the hardpack, rips the ice, jibs like whatever will not let you down when things get gnarly. Tested around the world from Mt. Baker to Summit Central…the early release model is an instant quiver killing factory favorite. Art is Mike Parillo’s “Tetons” oil painting (his first oil painting ever) originally used in the early nineties as an Emmagator graphic and now re-arranged by Lib graphic designer Annette Veihelmann. The original painting hangs at Asymbol in Jackson Wyoming… 5 beautiful photo prints have been made and Mike Parillo has donated his own personal print as the grand prize in our register and win contest… SpecsLib Tech Attack Banana 2012 Specs
