Advanced to Expert Freeride and Powder
Directional Tapered Hybrid Camber Shape (S-Rocker)

Take the Burton Supermodel, increase the taper, add S-Rocker and you have the Burton Malolo.  It can still ride the groomers better than the Burton Fish but is still pretty much a powder board especially now that it's made with S-Rocker.  S Rocker has a small camber in the back but a huge rocker starting at the front binding.  The small camber in the back makes the malolo incredibly easy to turn and still has some stability that the old camber shape did in years past.  The camber in the back makes for a much more poppy ride and makes it easier to hit natural jumps or carve on a non pow day. The Malolo has established itself over the years and now has a decent following.  The rocker in the front makes it so easy to float in powder and after this you will only want a hybrid shape in powder. We like the malolo better than the fish because it comes in bigger sizes and while still very surfy has a more traditional snowboarding style of riding in Pow.  You will see the Malolo everywhere which can be nausiating and because many people have it there is a lot of hype.  Is it deserved?  We don't know but we can say the Malolo is a fun board in powder and not bad in decent non powder conditions.  Remember that the 2009 and below models don't have S-Rocker.  Only the 2010 and up have it.  This is a direct competitor to the Rome Notch.  Both have S-Rocker, a similar taper and a decent ride on groomers.  The Malolo comes in more sizes but the Notch has 4 hole binding mounts that accommodate every binding.  So if you allready have a Burton EST  binding or Channel Tech compatible binding then the Malolo is the way to go.  If you have normal bindings then take a look at the Notch.  Both of these boards are right at the top of our pow board list so you can't go wrong either way.

The Good Ride Take

The Good Ride Take on Rocker/Reverse Camber Boards- At first rocker tech was mainly for the park and powder.  Now we are seeing many different riding styles of reverse camber and it's slowly establishing itself outside of the park as a viable solution.  There is one recurring theme of adding extra edge hold between the feet that seems to make this new design work.  Of course Mervin (Lib-Tech, Gnu & Roxy) lead the charge with the most edge hold and have rocker boards that ride as well or better than cambered boards. Many other companies have a solid understanding of the importance of adding a little extra edge hold between the feet as well.  Reverse Camber is not for everyone yet but this year almost every company has a rocker/reverse camber or flat rocker board so don't be a hater and go ride a few.  Some have a totally different feel that anything you have ever ridden and others are just a more catch free version of a traditional board.  We aren't sure on how reverse camber will play out but we will say that thanks to reverse camber we are riding in new ways and styles that continue to make this sport progress.  We thank Mervin and K2 for mixing it up and reintroducing functional rocker to our world! The creativity of the snowboard world has even lead to skiers hopping on our design bandwagon again!

The Good Ride Take on Burton

Burton is huge. They have developed or acquired most of the technology that we use today. Burton is one of the only companies that can provide you with everything you need to snowboard from boards to beanies.  Burton even owns arguably the best surfboard company Channel Islands because Jake likes to surf.  They are like the Yankees of snowboarding because they can always outspend their competition to win.

The positives- Burton provides more products for each gear/clothing/accessory category than any other company.  Burton has possibly the best customer service in the snowboarding industry.  Burton continuously spends more money than almost any company to develop new tech or just make what they have better.   Burton sponsors more pro’s and get’s more high level user feed back than any other company.  They have some of the best boots, bindings and boards in the industry.  They also have great clothing.

The Negatives- Because Burton spends so much money on sponsorship and tech they have to pass this cost along to the products they sell.   They relentlessly continue to jack up the prices every year.  You are almost always going to get a good product from Burton’s higher end line but some mid to low level products don’t stack up to the competition in the same price range.  Burton always tries to make proprietary tech like the channel tech and 3 hole binding tech so you can only ride Burton Gear which sucks! We wish they wouldn’t act like the Microsoft of snowboarding.

The bottom line is Burton is the 800lb patriarch of our industry that makes good stuff and backs it up with good customer service.  The snowboarding world owes soo much to them but at the same time they can be very frustrating when it comes to price and proprietary technology.

S-Rocker

Speed and float are your friends, and that’s what S-Rocker is all about. Entry rocker extends from the nose to under your front foot, then transitions to camber between your feet. Compressing the camber causes the entry rocker to naturally lift the nose, thus improving float while maintaining momentum and stability through deep-driving pow turns and variable conditions.
