2011 Burton Hate-
Continuous Rocker to Flat Camber Twin

2010 Burton Hate- Flat or Zero Camber Twin
Beginner to Expert Freestyle
The 2010 Burton Hate started out with a Zero camber shape that some liked but most didn't.  The 2011 Burton Hate it evolved from a flat profile to V-Rocker or continuous rocker with a flatter profile at the tip and tail.  The ride was more fun but lacked edge hold.  It still rocked the Jib park, added little more fun when it comes to turning and is a little more forgiving than the 2010.  The 2012 Burton Hate has a few refinements but the ride is still pretty similar to the 2011 Hate. If you are into this type of ride also take a look at the Burton Whammy Bar because it has a different set of jib tech that might work for you as well.  The Whammy is more catch free but the Hate's flat kick nose/tail might be more fun for what you want to do in the jib park. We'd probably give the ollie power to the Burton Hate because of that flat kick and the butterability to the Whammy Bar.  Also follow the weight recommendations or the Hate will not perform as described. This board is made for lighter riders.  This is a fun park ride

The Good Ride Take

The Good Ride Take on Continuous Rocker (For the 2012 and 2011 Burton Hate)
This is where it all started or re-started in the Mid 2000’s. In the beginning Continuous Rocker was mainly for park and powder. Today it's still pretty much made for the same 2 functions. There are a few boards that are made for all mountain to freeride use but most of those have migrated to hybrid shapes.  Continuous Rocker helps you maintain a catch free forgiving ride which is excellent for beginner riders or those who ride at slower playful speeds through the park.  Almost every one we have tried has to be on edge or it will wander giving you that squirrely feeling like a skateboard with loose trucks.  The biggest issue is it isn't very stable flat basing or one footing in firmer snow.  Continuous rocker is for the most part really poppy and helps you generate your own air.  There are many styles of this shape so this could be a good choice for beginners, park rats and people who only ride powder.

The Good Ride Take On Flat Camber (For the 2010 Burton Hate)
Flat Camber is a byproduct of Reverse Camber.  There are many types of Flat Camber with many shapes.  Some have flat camber between the feet and then bend the board up after the bindings.   Some have a nose and tail like a regular board but it just goes completely flat between them.   It has a lot of positive qualities.  One is the ability to float well in powder.  It doesn’t have that leg burn free feeling like rocker but some say it floats and performs better.  It is also very stable at high speeds and doesn’t have the issues that rocker and rocker/camber boards have.  Generally most rocker/camber and pure rocker boards don’t ride well in the flats due to the bend in the center of the board.  The bend can sometimes be the only contact on the snow and that makes the board unstable in the flats and it can be a bit squirrely at high speeds or on hard pack snow.  Flat Camber eliminates this issue.  It’s also very fun to jib and is very catch free. The biggest drawback is the lack of pop these boards have.  It is very hard to generate any spring to Ollie.  If pop is important then Flat Camber isn’t for you.  If you like to carve, stay close to the ground and want the same benefits that reverse camber offers in powder this might be a good choice over a cambered snowboard.

The Good Ride Take on Burton
Burton is huge. They have developed or acquired most of the technology that we use today. Burton is one of the only companies that can provide you with everything you need to snowboard from boards to beanies.  Burton even owns arguably the best surfboard company Channel Islands because Jake likes to surf.  They are like the Yankees of snowboarding because they can always outspend their competition to win.

The positives- Burton provides more products for each gear/clothing/accessory category than any other company.  Burton has possibly the best customer service in the snowboarding industry.  Burton continuously spends more money than almost any company to develop new tech or just make what they have better.   Burton sponsors more pro’s and get’s more high level user feed back than any other company.  They have some of the best boots, bindings and boards in the industry.  They also have great clothing.
The Negatives- Because Burton spends so much money on sponsorship and tech they have to pass this cost along to the products they sell.   They relentlessly continue to jack up the prices every year.  You are almost always going to get a good product from Burton’s higher end line but some mid to low level products don’t stack up to the competition in the same price range.  Burton always tries to make proprietary tech like the channel tech and 3 hole binding tech so you can only ride Burton Gear which sucks! We wish they wouldn’t act like the Microsoft of snowboarding.

The bottom line is Burton is the 800lb patriarch of our industry that makes good stuff and backs it up with good customer service.  The snowboarding world owes soo much to them but at the same time they can be very frustrating when it comes to price and proprietary technology.

The Burton Hate 2012

Burton Restricted

HATE

Instant aggression session.

In one of the Ghostbusters movies, the sewers of New York filled with this ooze that made everyone really mad. When building the Hate, we didn’t want that to happen, so instead of ooze, we filled it with playful V-Rocker™, a soft flex, and ollie boosting Jumper Cables. You’ll still hate all the Waldos, kooks, clowns, and beaters on the hill, but at least you’ll be loving the park while destroying it on the Hate.

Flat kicks combine with V-Rocker™ to terrorize all terrain with float and freedom, while NEW Jumper Cables intensify amplitude, harnessing the aggression within.

Hate running from security? Hate low-end “twin” boards that don’t hold up to street beatings? Hate getting bucked backwards down stairwells? Hate fighting camber? Hate half-assed tail presses? Hate everything? Then grab the new skate-shaped Hate and get pissed off.

Rocker Shape
  • Zero Camber

Zero Camber not only makes your board easier to press, butter, and revert, but less likely to catch an edge and give you a bloody lip on take-offs and landings. The overall freedom you’ll feel is a lot like loosening the trucks on your skateboard and perfect for jib-focused boards like the NEW Hate and NEW ConDOM.

Burton Hate 2010

The Good Ride Take on Rocker/Reverse Camber - At first rocker tech was mainly for the park and powder.  Now we are seeing many different riding styles of reverse camber and it's slowly establishing itself outside of the park as a viable all mountain solution.  This was re-vitalized mainly by Mervin (Lib-Tech, Gnu & Roxy) and K2 also put out a board at the same time.  This change in technology really makes it an exciting time for the sport of Snowboarding. We are seeing all types of technology out there but so far there are 2 predominant themes:
1. Pure Rocker where the board slowly curves up from the center.
2. Rocker and Camber where there is either a mini camber in the center or the board or the tail and nose bends back down.  Everything seems to be trending toward this type of design over straight camber.
The Positives
Reverse Camber helps you maintain a catch free forgiving ride which is excellent for beginner and Intermediate riders.  It’s also great for people who want to work on their game.   It rides excellent in Powder and floats better than almost any cambered board.  It helps you out of those situations where you could bog down.  It is also incredibly fun to jib around on and hit rails/boxes.  Some love reverse camber (especially rocker/camber) in the pipe and on jumps.  So far the rocker/camber combo’s seem to be winning out over straight rocker.  It provides more stability and is working its way into an all mountain ride.
The Negatives
the biggest issue we see is they are not very stable in the flats.  The Rocker/Camber combo’s do a lot better than the Pure Rocker boards but they still don’t track very well compared to a cambered board.  Almost every one we tried has to be on edge or it will wander.  The only ones that didn't had a mini camber between the feet and those were our favorite.  When you straight line a reverse camber board and get it up to high speeds it feels less stable than a cambered board.  Some rocker/camber boards are getting very close but if you are about speed then a cambered board is the better choice.  When it comes to pop the cambered board still wins out.
Is Camber dead?
In our opinion no way.  There is still a purpose for camber right now and many at the good ride still love camber for groomer and hard pack days. Reverse Camber is not for everyone yet but this year almost every company has a rocker/reverse camber.  Some companies don’t even offer a cambered board any more. It is our suggestion to go ride a few and form your own opinion. You might find a quiver board or even your primary board. We aren't sure on how reverse camber will play out but we feel that the next few years it will continue to evolve. We will say that we are riding in new ways and styles that continue to make this sport progress.  We thank K2 and especially Mervin (Lib-Tech, Gnu and Roxy) for reintroducing functional rocker to our world! The creativity of the snowboard world has even lead to skiers copying us again!
