Gnu Impossible Series Snowboard Review

2012-gnu-impossible_series

Gnu Impossible Series EC2 BTX Asymetrical Side Cut $799
Intermediate to Expert All Mountain Freestyle
Hybrid Rocker (aka EC2) Assymetrical Twin Shape
The Gnu Ipossible Series has a rather unique shape and was introduced in 2011.  It's called EC2 BTX and it lives somewhere between C2 BTX and BTX.  E stands for elliptical camber so instead of a V like bend down there is more of a C like bend down after the rocker. This provides a more loose ride but still allows your tail to grip the snow when in a carve. It's more loose and playful than C2 and C2 Power but still has much more of an all mountain feel to it than BTX.  The impossible lives somewhere between the Lib Tech Attack Banana and the Lib Tech Banana Magic in terms of it's ride.  The impossible takes an all mountain freestyle approach to the mountain that is very similar to the Attack Banana.  I.  This is similar enough to the Attack Banana in terms of sizing, flex, shape and riding style that its hard to recommend this expensive board over the Attack Banana.  There are some advantages though.  We feel the impossible series feels a little more stable between the feet and has a faster base. It also has a little more bite between the feet when it comes to edge hold.  If you can live with Mervin's (lib-tech and Gnu) mid level tech on the Attack Banana you might be almost or more happy because you can probably buy a good pair of bindings for the difference.  You can also save about $100 if you go with the Banana Magic and get a very similar but slightly more aggressive ride. Still this is a great board so if you are a drug dealer or a trust funder then have at it.

The Good Ride Take

A quick look at the 2012 Gnu Impossible Series

The Good Ride Take on Hybrid Rocker Snowboards

This is what we call a snowboard that has rocker in the center and then a camber bend at the tip and tail.  The end result is the tip and tail are still off the ground but it helps bring some good qualities that people liked with camber to rocker. The camber usually keep’s the board from washing out when you lay into a harder carve and for the most part provide a more balanced all conditions ride compared to continuous rocker or camber. This is still nothing like camber board and it provides a loose forgiving catch free ride. Hybrid Rocker comes in all riding styles from Freestyle to Freeride and is a solid next step from where it started with continuous rocker. Hybrid Rocker is usually pretty poppy, floats well in powder, catch free and very forgiving. The one complaint is it can still be unstable flat basing or one footing in some conditions like hard pack or ice. The major companies are working on this problem and it’s been getting better since this was introduced. Most love this loose feeling and get use to the squirrely nature in certain conditions. We at The Good Ride feel this is one of the better shapes out there so give it a try.

EC2 BTX Twin Asym Magnesium All Terrain Freestyle

New Impossible Series featuring Magnesium fiber technology and more tech than any gnu in history! Elliptical C2 Twin Asymmetric Banana Magne-Traction geometries, strong light Magnesium fibers, rugged Bio BEANs top material, glow in the dark sidewalls, lightweight Columbian Gold eco wood and Sintered bases. Celebrate the bounty! Balance through asymmetry. Standing sideways on a snowboard your body is asymmetric from heel to toe and your turn mechanics are different on your heel side and toe side. The Impossible perfectly balances nature’s asymmetry allowing complete freestyle freedom. Take an Impossible for a run and you will feel the difference for a few turns, then as your body and board realize perfect harmony with the technology you will achieve the state Gnu engineers call “imperceptible perfection” and new levels of shred joy will be actualized. Get balanced and get weird!
