Rossignol Krypto and Krypto Wide Snowboard Review

When Jones left Rossignol we thought the Rossignol Experience would be cancelled but instead it continued and now has an offchute called the Krypto which is new for 2012. We have to say that the Krypto is very similar to the Experience but it's different in these ways.  It's a little softer, has a little more camber in the nose and has more sizes for all types of riders. So if you like this style of board you have the Jones Flagship which is the stiffest and most aggressive, the Rossignol Experience which is more mellow but still aggressive and now you have the Krypto for those that want a more mellow version of the 2 above. Check out the detailed review below.

Here is a video of us taking the Krypto out for a few days in varied conditions

Groomers- The Krypto is a super fun groomer board if you like to ride good foot foward and carve or bomb the mountain.  It's especially fun on those top to bottom runs that provide a lot of speed.  What we liked is the Krypto isn't terrible when the groomers get rutted up or choppy.  It's a lot easier than the Jones Flagship here and a little bit easier than the Experience.  Understand none of these boards are anywhere close to ideal when it's choppy so think twice if you spend a lot of time on well tracked groomed runs.  All these boards are made for nice groomers and powder.

Powder- Pretty awesome.  Most of us would have liked to see a little more float but the Krpyto was pretty awesome.  If you like the camber type of ride in powder you will be pretty happy because it does that with a little more float.  We felt that both it's cousins the Jones Flagship and Experience were a little better when it came to powder riding.

Turn Initiation/Carving- The Krypto is easier than it looks when it comes to quick turns.  It still takes a little work but it's there when you need it.  It has that steep slidey feel that both the Jones and Flagship feel that isn't off the tail super surfy but it's still pretty fun. When it comes to carving the Krypto is super fun we had a lot of fun laying into hard carves on good to firm snow.
Speed-It can straight line pretty well.  Out of the Jones and Experience this is the slowest but the Krypto still has a lot of juice if you want to point it.

Weight- Not heavy or light

Edge Hold- If you ride in icy conditions the Krypto has amazing edge hold.  The grip felt limitless in almost any terrain. As usual with this kind of side cut it felt overly grippy when it came to softer thicker snow.

Flex- This is a softer flex than the Experience but it's still not soft.....especially tortionally.

The rest doesn't matter too much because this is a freeride board.  It can hang in the pipe and of course this is a great natural terrain jump board that has some pretty good pop.  If you feel like the Experience and expecially the Jones are too much board but like the idea of them then Krypo is a great call.  It's going to be more forgiving but still offer a very similar ride.  All of us had a good time on the Krypto and our only complaint is it took just a little more work in powder than the Flagship and Experience.

The Good Ride Take on Hybrid Camber
For the most part there are two types of hybrid camber that we see out there these days.

1. Mostly Rocker Hybrid Camber
This type of ride, like many boards, has camber and rocker but unlike other rockered boards the center has a mini camber. This is usually 1-3mm high, sits only between the bindings and then curves up right after. From a distance this board looks like a rocker board but when you look closer you see the little camber between the feet. This is not as loose as hybrid rocker but it’s very close. It is very stable between the feet and easy to one foot or flat base in any condition out there. Mostly Rocker Hybrid Camber is very versatile. You will see this design on anything from Freestyle to Freeride style snowboards. This will work well with all ability levels and riding styles.

2 Mostly Camber Hybrid Camber
There are all types of designs but this type usually looks like a Camber board and rides much closer to an old school Camber board.  ONe thing you will notice is usually when you step on the board the tip and tail rise up a lot more than a normal camber board will.  Some are mostly camber and others have a bit more rocker but you will always notice they have camber.  This allows for a stable, fast carve friendly feeling you get with camber but also makes it more catch free and floaty in powder.  This doesn't float effortlessly like hybrid rocker, mostly rocker hybrid camber or flat to rocker but it does better than camber.  You will mainly see this on aggressive freestyle to all mountain to freeride style snowboards.

Rossignol Krypto 2012 Description

Maybe sometimes you need a break from 40º pitches and 4ft of fresh pow in AK and just want to ride all day like a mere mortal. Grown from the same seed as the Experience MagTek, the Krypto MagTek's balanced, forgiving flex and full wood core goes down smooth every time you hit it.
