Rome Agent and Agent Wide Snowboard Review

agent-152
$499
Intermediate to Expert All Mountain
Camber Twin Like Directional Shape
This was designed from the creator of the Burton custom and it's very much like it in almost every way.  Rome did however make a few additions that make the Agent more sturdy and slightly more damp. The Rome Agent is a great all mountain do anything board that is built to last a long time. If you want something that not everyone has and is just as good or arguably better than the Burton custom then choose the Agent.  Not everyone wants the Rome Agent Rocker so we are happy to see this camber version still going strong.   You can also ride other bindings than Burton because this doesn't have the channel system.  For 2011 Rome improved the flex on the Agent to make it more responsive between the feet and we like this. For 2012 there wasn't much changed except there is some new pop rod tech in the board.  We felt the 2011 was pretty popy so it's hard to tell how much this improved. The Rome Agent will perform well anywhere on the mountain and is made to withstand a beating with big thick rails, a strong base and sturdy top sheet.  We are big fans of Rome at the Good Ride. The Good Ride Take

The Rome Agent Snowboard Review by The Good Ride

Board- 158 & 160
Bindings- Burton Cartels, Union Force, Flux SF45
People who tried the board- 5'10" 195lbs size 9 shoe, 6' 160lbs size 10.5 shoe
Days on the board 11

When trying the Rome Agent we already knew how great this board would be so we weren't that surprised when it lived up to our expectations. This is right up there at the pinnacle of all mountain boards.  If you can only afford one board to do everything then this is a good choice.  We had no surprises and no disappointments.  It's a fast mid flexing stable board that is built very well.   We would pick this over the Burton Custom any day for a few reasons.  1 is the price and 2 is that you can use any binding with this board.  Burton's channel system keeps you imprisoned to only Burton or Burton Channel compatible bindings which is a huge shame.  The Agent is very similar to the Burton Custom. Actually the designer of the Custom started this company.  This is a more sturdy version of the custom camber with thicker rails and an all around sturdy approach to the build.  It's a bit heavier than the Custom but to many the durability will be worth it.

Groomers- Let's face it.  Most people spend most of their time on groomers so this is a very important category.  This cambered board is fun and fast on morning groomers. As it gets chewed up it's still forgiving on bumpy terrain. We liked the ride and felt this might be its' best category.

Powder- With a twinish shape and not much set back this board is not going to blow your mind in the deep stuff but its exactly what you would expect for a cambered board.  It will be fun until it gets really deep.

Turn Initiation- It's easy to turn for a mid flexing board.  It makes big carving turns fun but if you need to make a quick turn in a jam it will be very responsive.  This is not for a beginner and will take a little while to get use to if you are an intermediate.  Advanced to Expert riders will appreciate this board immediately and enjoy its ability to turn.  If you compare this to the Agent Rocker you will see that this is going to be a lot more difficult but compared to other camber boards in it's category it's pretty easy.

Speed-  There is a fast base, mid flexing so that makes it very damp.  You can straight line this thing without issues.  Its not going to have the stability of the Rome Anthem but it sure is fast for it's category.

Weight-  It's pretty heavy but you can see why if you examine it closely.  The rails have a lot more steel and the board is thicker. It's built to last a long time and judging by the extra everything on the board you can ride this 100+ days a year for a many seasons before it gives up on you.

Edge Hold- This board will climb a steep icy pipe wall but it won't be the best board on an icy day.  Ice sucks but if it's something you have to face all the time look for a different board.  If you ride in mainly good conditions like we do then this board handles most situations we deal with.

Stiffness-
This is on the stiffer side of mid flexing which makes for a good all mountain board.

Switch- We thought this board would not be as much fun to ride switch as most boards of this shape but it did a very good job.  If you ride switch on occasion you won't be disappointed.  If you ride switch a lot then look for a twin or directional twin.

Rails and Jibbing- Great for a visit but you don't want this as your street specialist.  Its sturdy and slides well but flex is just to medium to really handle long kinked rails or big Jibs.  Still it's not bad if you just want to hit a mellow small rail or small jib.

Pipe-  The Agent is not bad in the pipe. It climbs the wall well and has enough flex to land a less than perfect hit.  We felt that there are other boards that really did a better job than the Agent but this is a ride everything well board but not great board.

Jumps- Go big or small and this board will be there for you. We also like how the Agent Camber generates it own air.  Both the 2011 and 2012 are very poppy boards so it's hard to say how much better the 2012's new pop tech is than the 2011.  It seems more poppy but again it's hard to tell.

A quick look at the 2012 Rome Agent

The Good Ride Take on Rome
Rome is relatively new but has some of the best people in the industry working there.  For example the designer of the Burton custom is now a principle and designer at Rome.  Their strong point is that they make exceptional park and all mountain snowboards.  They make boots and bindings that are loved or hated but don’t have the rep that their boards have.  From what we have experienced with their clothing its well made, fits well and the waterproofing isn’t bad for the price.   Their gloves are hit or miss and don’t really have the rep that their clothing does.  They have exceptional customer service and everyone at Rome seems to really love what they are doing so if you have an issue it will most likely be handled professionally.   Rome hasn’t really been leading the innovation charge the last few years but almost everything they make is well thought out and fun to use.   Rome has the average to 100+ day freestyle to all mountain rider dialed out.

Rome Agent 2011

Agent Snowboard
THE GOLD STANDARD, REINVENTED AGAIN
As Rome emerged from its pre-launch days in a poorly-heated loft above a garage back in 2001, the first Agent was born. A lot has changed with this board over the years, but one thing has remained the same: a fun, mid-flexing personality rooted in the park, but with skills that extend all over the mountain. Loaded with new technology in 2011, this evolution pops harder off the lip of a jump and slashes with more power for deeper trips to the white room. MSRP: $500.00 USD

Great all around board

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
If you want a great board to shred every bit of the mountain, then this is the board for you. It will dominate any flake on that snow covered mountain, including the park. It reminds me of the "jack of all trades master of none" because it certainly isnt the best option for any one thing, but it will compete and keep you up there with any board no matter where you're at. I always get compliments on my board, the design and look of Rome boards are second to none. You'll love this board if you enjoy the entire mountain rather than just the park or just the slopes. I ride a 158W w/ Cartels and Burton boots.
