The Good Ride Take

The Arbor Wasteland Review by The Good Ride

Size 163
Days 9
Riders- 5'10" 195lbs size 9 shoe, 5'11 175lbs size 8.5 shoe, 6' 160lbs size 10.5 shoe, 6'1" 170lbs size 10.5.

The Arbor Wasteland is a unique board with good graphics and a pretty interesting ride for a continuous rocker.  I guess it's supposed to be a mid/wide board but even the small footed guys who rode this didn't notice much of a difference in ride quality.

Groomers- This is good but it isn't great.  It was missing that special feeling on groomers that many boards have.

Powder- The wasteland is an easy float in powder.  We wish it had a little set back to make directional riding easier in deeper sierra cement but it's not bad for a centered directional twin.  We had a few pow days on this and really liked the effortless float it provided.

Turn Initiation/Carving- The Wasteland was easy to turn and could get from edge to edge very easy.  It made short and wider radius turns pretty and despite the continuous rocker feel it was still pretty fun. When it came to carving the wasteland wasn't terribly washy but it wasn't as fun as many hybrid shapes or camber shapes are.  The Wasteland isn't the choice for carving but it's strengths lie in other places.

Speed- This has a fast base and a pretty decent flex but the rocker shape made this not as stable as some boards we rode.  It felt at times like you were just riding on the center of the board and bombing a hill wasn't as fun as flat/rocker or hybrid camber and of course camber boards.  The more speed we picked up the less comfortable we felt. It felt a little like you were in a car with soft shocks when going fast or heading through in choppy terrain.

Weight- We didn't weigh it but it wasn't light but not heavy.

Edge Hold- We are big fans of Arbors take on edge hold with Rocker boards.  It makes their rocker boards hold an edge better than some of their camber boards.  The sizeable extension of the edge at each foot really holds to the snow while not acting grippy in thicker snow.  Very well done.  We rode this board in all types of conditions and we never once had our edge slip.

Flex- The Wasteland is rated as medium but we felt it closer to soft in the way it rode.  It's soft enough to butter but not super soft that it was incredibly easy.  Still it's a good all mountain freestyle type of flex.

Switch- The Wasteland was pretty easy to ride switch and doesn't feel much different riding either way.  It's a fun board to approach anything switch or regular.

Rails/Jibbing- It's not a dedicated jib board but it's sure a lot of fun hitting small to medium jibs and rails.  We had a good time stopping in the park with the Wasteland.

Pipe- The edge hold here with the Wasteland was good enough to get us up and down the pipe walls but it was missing something that made it excellent.  Still if you want to lap the pipe the Wasteland won't be a terrible idea.

Jumps- One of the best qualities of the wasteland.  What made it a little awkward at higher speed makes it incredibly poppy when you need to spring into the air off a natural feature on the mountain. It was just incredibly easy to ollie and we all had fun popping off things around the mountain.  When we stopped in the park the Wasteland was really fun as well.

All in all the Wasteland is a great board for crusing around the mountain and looking for jumps or lapping the park.  It's a good all conditions freestyle ride.

Arbor Wasteland 2012

Updated technical info and profile video coming very soon!

Arbor’s flagship snowboard has finally met our flagship System set of technologies; the result, an all new Wasteland that still delivers its signature street-to-mountain versatility and powerful all around performance, but with the ultra clean ride that only rocker provides.
Artist: Max Grundy

THE TOPSHEET

INLAID WOOD POWER PLY - Arbor’s wood Power Ply works like a 3rd layer of fiberglass - during construction resin locks the dense natural fibers in place, creating a composite layer that structurally enhances a board for added return and improved durability, while allowing for important weight reduction. The Power Ply technology allows Arbor to reduce our overall reliance on chemically treated fiberglass and petroleum-based resin by up to 20%.  The Power Ply is produced using sustainably sourced, natural wood veneer. The variance of real wood grain creates a one-of-a-kind look on each board made with this technology.

BIO-FILM - Every board in the Arbor line is now built with an ultra thin protective top foil made using 30% caster bean based bio-plastic.  This top sheet protects the board from damage caused by loose bindings, out-of-control skiers, or other unforeseen impacts.  Its natural glossy nature also eliminates the need for environmentally harmful clear coats.

WOOD CORE

SHAMAN CORE - Our lightest, most tech core; designed for high-end mountain and park riding; built with a 50/50 blend of Paulownia and Poplar wood.  Paulownia is a highly renewable, balsa-like species that delivers ultra lightweight performance.  Unlike Balsa, Paulownia wood’s tensile strength is similar to traditional wood core materials, which allows us to deliver maximum weight reduction, without reducing durability.  FSC certified, sustainably sourced Poplar is then added to provide more compression strength.

BASE

ROCKET BASE - A higher molecular weight, wax-infused sintered base that provides unmatched durability and speed

SIDECUT

STANDARD PROGRESSIVE - A blended tri-radial sidecut design that provides tighter turning and quicker initiation, while maintaining stability at speed and during landings.

SIDEWALLS

RHYTHM RAILS - Made from an advanced blend of ABS and urethane; delivers durability, a clean, acoustically damp ride, and solid edge performance.

GLASS BALANCING

BUTTER GLASSING - A biax over biax lay-up that’s designed for park and street inspired all-mountain riding.

REINFORCING

KEVLAR / CARBON REINFORCED TIPS - Delivers the ultimate landing durability and tip/tail pop for big park and backcountry level performance.

INSERTS

2X4 14-PACKS - An insert system that provides a wide stance range and amazing micro adjustability; used to create Arbor’s:

Sumo Stance - Max Stance: 25.2" / 64cm

SHADOW FLEX

MEDIUM SHADOW - Delivers mountain and park performance.  A slight tapered thinning of the core profile between the bindings, improves: turn and spin initiation; tracking in mixed conditions, on the flats, and during landings; and performance on rails, boxes, and naturals.

EDGES

RECYCLED STEEL - Built with hardened steel edges made with 60% recycled steel; provides maximum edge performance.

2-YEAR WARRANTY

Every board in the Arbor line comes with a two-year warranty on material and workmanship.  We stand by everything we make.
