The Good Ride TakeRome Agent Rocker Review by The Good RideSize 157 The Rome Agent Rocker is a very unique board. On paper is seems very similar to many of the hybrid rocker boards from Lib-Tech, Gnu, Never Summer and Burton. If you look closer you will see it has a unique side cut that makes the ride different than all the other hybrid rocker boards we tried. Rome calls it "QuickRip" and it is difficult to describe. There is a very small radius side cut that extends a bit past the feet. It also extends out from the edge a bit to create better edge hold. Then there is a second side cut after that. Here is a picture from Rome that describes it better. When you look at the side cut this extension after the bindings is rather visible.
We find this tech to be a new approach to riding a hybrid rocker board and very versitile compared to other boards. It has a loose feel when not on edge and a very aggressive all mountain feel when laying into a carve.
Groomers- We found this to suit 2 moods. If you want to cruise, play around, butter and make easy turns the Rome Agent Rocker will accommodate you. If you want to be a bit more aggressive and take a more freeride/all mountain carving approach to the groomers the Agent Rocker will work well. The one thing we would like to see is a bit more stability between the feet. There is a lot of rocker going on here and it makes for a very loose ride until you put this board on a serious edge. This is a positive and also a negative in some cases. Most will like this feel but some might not. Getting on and off the chair is a more difficult with the Agent Rocker because of this loose feeling. You have to make sure your back foot is as close to the back binding as it can get so you have more stability. Powder- This is about as fun as a twin like board with a centered stance can get in powder. The serious bend between the feet makes the Agent Rocker a very floaty ride. It's no powder specific board but about the best you can do for a one board quiver. We didn't have a powder day but have on other Rome rocker boards very similar to this and have to say it's a pretty easy ride. We'd like to see a bit of a set back stance like a -20mm or even -10mm to make the performance even better for directional powder riding. Lets face it many of us just don't take on a switch/freestyle approach on powder days and it would be nice to have the option for those that like directional set back riding when it's deep. Turn Initiation/Carving- We touched on this a bit on the Groomer section but lets elaborate. To start off with "Quickrip" is not a gimmick. When it comes to making short quick turns this board is about as easy as it gets. The Agent is very loose and very easy to transition from edge to edge but we might say it's almost too loose compared to some of the other hybrid rocker boards we tried. As you lean into the turn to make a wider turn you start to feel the side cut engage. If you lay into a carve you feel like you are riding a different board and you almost get a surprise as the side cut grips in and accelerates your turn. We both really liked it but can't say for certain that it's for everyone. All we can say is we had as much or more fun carving with the Agent Rocker as we did with the Never Summer SL R, Lib Tech TRS C2 BTX, and more fun than the Burton Custom Flying V Rocker. Speed- The Agent Rocker has a very fast base and picks up speed very fast. We like this for hitting a little jump right near the chair or getting up speed for hits in the park. The serious rocker makes for a bit of a loose ride unless you are comitted to an edge so this isn't the best for bombing a hill. There is also some chatter you can experience at higher speeds. This is not ideal if you are a bomber rider. Weight- This isn't a feather weight but it's definitely light. The Agent Rocker is well built though and looks like it will last a 100 day season of average to rough riding. Edge Hold- The "Quickrip" side cut really increases edge hold. We haven't been on ice but found this board to be pretty grippy in snowment conditions. It's right there with Never Summer's side cut but we feel a step down from Magnetraction side cuts. Still this will perform well in just about any condition the average rider will want to be out on and we never felt like the edge wanted to give up on us. Flex- This is pretty much the middle ground of medium but due to the large amount of rocker the Rome Agent Rocker has a softer feel. Really fun to butter around if you want to slow down and play on the mountain. Switch- This is a Twin like directional board so the shape is almost like a directional twin. It's a little different switch but it's still very easy to ride either direction. The centered stance makes it easier to ride switch but it's still different. Rails/Jibbing- There are better boards out there but if you are in a jibbing mood you can do it all day if you need to. To most this will lean to the average side of good but it's still not bad to hit a rail or 2. If you are hitting more technical kinked rails and boxes you will want more but if you slide over the average rail in the park the Agent Rocker won't let you down. Pipe- There is enough edge hold to get up and down the pipe. The Agent Rocker also has a lot of forgiveness with it's rocker. We don't go big in the pipe but we had fun transitioning from wall to wall. Jumps- The Rome Agent Rocker is very poppy. We could generate our own air just about anywhere on the mountain and found this to be one of our favorite boards for springing off any bump we could find on a groomed run. Like the pipe we dont go that big in the park but we could tell this could be fun with just about any size kicker. We didn't notice too much difference between the 2011 and 2012 boards in terms of pop but one of the riders did feel the 2012 was a little more popy. It's always hard to tell.

The Good Ride Take on Hybrid Rocker SnowboardsThis is what we call a snowboard that has rocker in the center and then a camber bend at the tip and tail. The end result is the tip and tail are still off the ground but it helps bring some good qualities that people liked with camber to rocker. The camber usually keep’s the board from washing out when you lay into a harder carve and for the most part provide a more balanced all conditions ride compared to continuous rocker or camber. This is still nothing like camber board and it provides a loose forgiving catch free ride. Hybrid Rocker comes in all riding styles from Freestyle to Freeride and is a solid next step from where it started with continuous rocker. Hybrid Rocker is usually pretty poppy, floats well in powder, catch free and very forgiving. The one complaint is it can still be unstable flat basing or one footing in some conditions like hard pack or ice. The major companies are working on this problem and it’s been getting better since this was introduced. Most love this loose feeling and get use to the squirrely nature in certain conditions. We at The Good Ride feel this is one of the better shapes out there so give it a try. The Good Ride Take on Rome

Like so many people, I want to thank James for pointing me to the board of my dreams. Having demo'ed a Burton Custom Flying V, and loving everything about it except it's terrible edge hold on ice, I asked the Good Ride for help, and James pointed me to this board and the Never Summer SL, claiming they'd give me a similar ride but have better edge hold. This recommendation was right on. I took the Agent Rocker through some of the hardest ice Killington could throw at it, and unlike the Flying V, it gave me the confidence to carve through all of it. I was lucky enough to even take it through some ungroomed trails that had just opened up for the season (which meant about a foot of powder), and it held up great in that too. It's an incredibly fun, confidence boosting ride everywhere on the mountain, and I highly recommend it to anyone looking for a one board quiver who likes attacking everything the sport of snowboarding has to offer a beginning-advanced snowboarder, and have fun doing all of it.

agent rocker - do everything board

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
I was looking for the agnet rocker for a long time, as I've noticed i don' change my boards(i had a jib-üark board and a freeride board) when I go snowboarding, even for 14 days vacation. Im just too lazy, so i wanted one board to do it all.I ride mostly park oriented but never miss to go backcounty and use natural terrain, love freeriding and when on groomed run - i bomb it down as fast as i can. I bought agent rocker after sseing some reviws on youtube, but then i discovered the good ride and found here hands down the best reviews ever. (also thanks 2 james for personal support=)). I have 10-11 version of agent rocker 157, bought it on sale and have had 6 days on it now. Three days in ischgl were groomed runs only, no park. And another 3 days in Sölden were pow days with rly shitty to perfect bluebird weather. Also they had 2 rails there but no kicker, so basically no park as well. Have to say i wasnt sure at first about rome agent, cause it was bigger than my ususal size (157 to 154). But i got used to it rather quickly. First waht i mentioned - it carves, carves rly well, it was almost a fotgotten feeling after riding mostly park boards and i have had immence fun with it. Also its rly poppy and i had no problems flexing it. Was rly pleased with the flex to pop relation. The base is hella fast and survived some serious stone kinks in my powder days. To powder: i use rome 390 boss with 3,5 degree footbeds on them with a wide stance. so i press the rocker rly flat. Thats why i had to lean back a little while surfing through snow deeps but compared to a normal park board it was rly not difficult. The boards wants to float.Next time i'll take normal 0degree footbeds and i bet freeriding'll be peanuts. It was rly easy to do front 360 on any bumps i could find and pop n' ollie, so that board is rly fun. My biggest concern was the jibability with a 157 compared to my last GNU StreetSeries but i was rly surprised on that field. The board is rly easy to rotate or swing and feels smaller than it is. All in all a great do anything board. I'm rly happy with the purchase! if u're just like me who rides from pow to park in one day and dont likes to change setups depending on the conditions - this is the board 4 ya. Have had no kicker, but i think it will be there good as well. |
