Rome Artifact Snowboard Review

Intermediate to Expert Freestyle and Jib

Camber Twin Shape
Another great jib park snowboard from Rome that is cambered, pretty poppy and very jib friendly.  Rome makes great boards and although camber isn't as popular these days it still does a great job in the park. It's a border line noodle board but still in the soft range.  In 2010 the Artifact had bronze edges and a normal sidecut making it pretty much a pure jib board. It makes for a shitty ride on icy cat tracks but blows minds on rails or anything that tries to stick to the boards rails.  In 2011 the Artifact added a new sidecut and changed the rails back to steel. This changed the dynamics of the board to make this a a jib board that can handle other things in the park as well as play around on the mountain without high expectations. The new side cut is the key element here because the extension of the edges past the bindings creates better edge hold and makes it easier to carve.  The change in side cut brought the edge hold from rough to good.  As you ride more rails and hit more jibs it will go to average.  In 2012 the Artifact refined the ride a bit and added a newer pop tech to make it a bit more poppy but the ride is very similar to 2011.  All in all the Rome Artifact is a fun camber jib board that can do ok in other places as well.

The Good Ride Take

A quick look at the 2012 Rome Artifact

The Good Ride Take on Rome
Rome is relatively new but has some of the best people in the industry working there.  For example the designer of the Burton custom is now a principle and designer at Rome.  Their strong point is that they make exceptional park and all mountain boards.  They have also made some really good boots, binding and clothing.  They have exceptional customer service and everyone at Rome seems to love what they are doing.  Rome should be considered when you are looking to buy and they are often overlooked.   Every product we have experienced from Rome has always been well made.  We would like to see a few more Freeride boards, boots, and bindings but all in all Rome has the average to 100+ day all mountain rider dialed.

Artifact Snowboard

GOOD, MEAN FUN

First designed six years ago, the Artifact is the OG of jib-specific snowboards flexed and shaped for rails, ledges, boxes and barrels. And priced for shreds who live in resort-town ghettos and wash dishes. With QuicGrip Sidecut and a new impact-resistant core, we’ve evolved it for the new season. Still a buttery-ass board, it’s LNP’s choice if he knows he’ll be spinning onto rails. He also likes feel of the Stay Positive Camber for locking into long blunts. MSRP: $370.00 USD

A soft board that can still hold a eurocarve as well as a rail

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful
I usually ride snappy camber boards, having grown up with pipe boards and equipment that was best suited to busting out Mach 9 eurocarves and hitting big jumps - lots of carbon stringers and pop. I recently started to teach my 5 year old daughter to snowboard, and figured I would need something better suited to going slow, so I bought the artifact camber 156. It was ideal for noodling around, but I was also surprised at how well it handled high speeds and early morning ice. So I then took it into the park to hit some kickers, and it nailed that too. After years of being obsessed with super stiff boards, I realised that as I lay down a eurocarve (admittedly in slush) on my artifact, that soft boards can ride damn well too, and also let you get away with way more. Converted.
