Intermediate to Expert Big Mountain
Directional Hybrid Camber Shape
This looks like a traditional cambered board but if you look closer you notice this has a lot more nose turned up in the front to make this a great powder snowboard. It's not rocker but it's definitely a different hybrid camber/MTX design. It performs well in powder and the magnetraction still grips the hell out of an icy peak on your way to the fresh stuff. Even though it looks like its not finished Rossignol put a lot of effort into making a good freeride board. It holds right up there with the good Big Mountain Freeride boards.  It's not for everyone but might work very well for you.  For 2011 Jeremy (Inspiration behind the Experience)  started his own company and created the  Jones Flagship which a stiffer version of the Experience. We thought when Jeremy left the Experience would die but it looks like the Experience will live on for 2011. For 2012 it rides pretty much the same as it was in 2011 except there is a little less chatter in the nose. There aren't enough freeride boards out there so we like to see 2 slightly different Jones creations out there. One thing we like over the Jones Flagship is that the Experience is softer than the Flagship. This year there is also a more mellow version of the Experience called the Krypto. Check the detailed review below.

The Good Ride Take

The Rossignol Experience Snowboard Review by The Good Ride

Days- 4
Board Tried- 167 & 163
Bindings Used-  Flux Feedback, Burton Co2's

Boots- Burton SLX

Rossignol makes good boards but they don't have the ultra fan boy following that many companies have. This board is cambered with Magnetraction but has something similar to Burton's S-Rocker where it has an extra long nose that turns up a little bit past the binding.  The 167 rides like a 163 on groomers but in the powder it rides bigger than it's size.

A Qick Look at the 2012 Rossignol Experience

Groomers- The mostly camber board with Magnetraction gives us a feeling of the mid 2000's when camber MTX was everywhere so it was fun to re-visit this tech.  This board is made for big mountain powder adventures but it performs pretty well on groomers.  We had lots of fun riding down a steep long groomed run or a long intermediate run.  The board was fun to make belly scratching turns and it does well at high speeds.  The only issue is it doesn't feel as stable with such a big turned up nose it flops around like a loose sock and gives the illusion of chatter.  Despite that sock floppy feeling it is great to make big or short turns on the groomers at almost any speed.

Powder-  Here is what this board is made for.  This extended nose does a great job of counteracting a cambered boards natural tendency to sink down and the size helps you deal with deep situations.   The board has a decent set back, MTX to help you get through icy tops to the pow, the decent set back and a crazy big extended nose will keep you afloat in deep situations.    The board is a great choice for powder especially if you like it in steep conditions.  The board is very easy to turn for its size and will do fine in the trees.  That being said it will be more fun in the steep and deep.  Also the floppy sock feeling goes away when straight lining in powder because the nose is being engaged.

Turn Initiation- If you are coming from a more aggressive camber freeride board you will find this very easy to turn for it's size in almost any situation.  If you are coming from an all mountain or softer more freestyle focused board you will find this more challenging.  The MTX cut makes for a quicker turn initiation and a better bite into the snow.  We forgot how MTX helps improve turn initiation.  It's not as easy as BTX or hybrid rocker boards but it's easier than most cambered boards.  It is the kind of board that will let you get almost parallel to the snow on a carve without too much effort.  We found this to be really fun to carve especially in firmer snow.  In softer snow it has a little of that overly grippy feeling but you quickly get use to that.

Speed- The rocker in the nose is great in powder but on hard pack it flops a little.  Each year this is getting better but it's still there.   After a while you get use to the clown shoe nose and you realize the rest of the board is stable and it becomes fun.

Lightweight- It isn't going to break any records but it is in no means heavy.

Edge Hold-  MTX with a mostly camber shape has an insane Grip and can turn a shitty hard pack morning into a good time. Some feel that this MTX is too grippy in good conditions or sticky snow.  So it's up to you to decide.

Stiffness-  The board has a medium stiff flex that is just enough to make it easy to turn but be able to handle higher speeds.  It's a lot less stiff than the Jones Flagship and a little stiffer than the Rossignol Krypto.

Nothing else really matters.  This big board will climb a pipe wall well but won't be able to throw around like a small board.  The rails/boxes thing is doable but not recommendable.  Switch is doable but not great and jumps are fine off of a cliff but not recommendable for the park.

We were really surprised that the board could ride the way it did on groomers and expected it to perform the way it did in powder.  We feel it's one of the better Rossignol boards out there and worth a try.  It's great for someone who wants to work on their freeriding to take it to the next level.

The Good Ride Take on Hybrid Camber
For the most part there are two types of hybrid camber that we see out there these days.

1. Mostly Rocker Hybrid Camber
This type of ride, like many boards, has camber and rocker but unlike other rockered boards the center has a mini camber. This is usually 1-3mm high, sits only between the bindings and then curves up right after. From a distance this board looks like a rocker board but when you look closer you see the little camber between the feet. This is not as loose as hybrid rocker but it’s very close. It is very stable between the feet and easy to one foot or flat base in any condition out there. Mostly Rocker Hybrid Camber is very versatile. You will see this design on anything from Freestyle to Freeride style snowboards. This will work well with all ability levels and riding styles.

hybrid-camber

2 Mostly Camber Hybrid Camber
There are all types of designs but this type usually looks like a Camber board and rides much closer to an old school Camber board.  ONe thing you will notice is usually when you step on the board the tip and tail rise up a lot more than a normal camber board will.  Some are mostly camber and others have a bit more rocker but you will always notice they have camber.  This allows for a stable, fast carve friendly feeling you get with camber but also makes it more catch free and floaty in powder.  This doesn't float effortlessly like hybrid rocker, mostly rocker hybrid camber or flat to rocker but it does better than camber.  You will mainly see this on aggressive freestyle to all mountain to freeride style snowboards.

Rossignol Experience 2012 Description

MAGTEK
You don't have to be a nuclear physicist to know that if matter and anti-matter combine you have one hell-uv-a cataclysmic event. The same holds true when 3X World Extreme Champion Xavier De Le Rue's warped sense of reality comes in contact with the endless possibilities in board design being dreamed up in the Rossi R& D lab. The result is the mind-blowing creation we call the Experience MagTek. AmpTek All-Mountain camber combined with Magne-Traction sidecut come together to create the only board capable of going where no one, except Xav, has gone before.

Rossignol Experience 2011 Description

Based on last year's Experience, the 2010 edition is a thrasher subgenre of all mountain snowboarding characterized by its combination of Magne-Traction edges for an infinite grip and AmpTek for ultimate absorption and flawless control. The new Experience elevates confidence to unprecedented level with an extended nose and tail that taper off just before the inserts. Those exaggerated nose and tail lengths absorb bumps and sharp trannies like nothing you've ever experienced and bring total control. Deadly - the end. Need say no more.
