Capita Indoor Survival FK Snowboard Review

indoor-survival-hero_0

Intermediate to Expert Freestyle to all mountain Freestyle
2011- Camber Twin Shape or Flat/Rocker Twin Shape
2012- Flat/Rocker Twin Shape
The Indoor Survival FK has evolved from a camber board in 2010 to a flat/rocker board in 2011 with the old camber option available as well.  The 2012 is all flat/rocker and the camber is gone. There is a lot more flat than rocker with the Indoor Survival and it makes for a more all mountain ride than some of the boards in Capita's line. Check out the detailed review below.

The Good Ride Take

The Capita Indoor Survival FK Review by The Good Ride
 Size 156
Riders- 5'10" 190lbs Size 9 shoe, 6' 160lbs Size 10.5 shoe
Boots- Burton SLX
Bindings- Union Atlas

Groomers-We had pretty decent conditions but it was towards the end of the day and there were places that are chewed up and places that were smooth and pristine due to week day riding.  The Indoor Survival had a very stable tankish kind of feel on the groomed runs and in softer chewed up slushy parts the Indoor plowed through it.  It's a feeling that some will really like and some won't.

Powder-No real powder to play around in but from our experience a twin like this with a flat/rocker and centered stance will be better than camber, plane well but doesn't have that effortless float that some hybrid boards do.

Turn Initiation/Carving- The flat/rocker almost flat camber board was more difficult to get from edge to edge than many other boards of this shape.  There is even a narrow waist which usually makes for a an easier board to turn.  At first it felt like a fat awkward kid but after a run or two you get use to its feel and it isn't bad.  If you like that lock an edge kind of stable feel then you will like this board but if you like short snappy turns then you might not be into it.  When laying into a carve there is just enough edge to lay into a turn and enough rocker at the end to make it dealable towards the end of the turn.  It's nothing like the BSOD but it's not bad for a mostly flat/rocker board.

Speed- The Indoor Survival is damp and has little to no chatter but the base is kind of slow which evens it out a bit.  We'd say this is closer to the good side of average.  It's still pretty fun and chatter free for a decent straight line but it's not going to keep it's speed like some boards on a long traverse.

Weight- This isn't terribly light but that's what you expect for the price.

Edge Hold- Not bad here and we never felt like we needed more.  Ice and snowment might be another thing but in most conditions you should be fine with the Indoor.

Flex- Felt like it was run of the mill medium with a slight lean towards the stiffer side of things.  It's not terribly easy to butter but it's not difficult either. We'd like to see them soften this up just a bit but to each his own.

Switch- Easy either way like a true twin should.

Rails/Jibbing- Not bad but the medium flex is a bit much for our taste.  Still the sizable amount of flat between the feet makes for an easy slide.

Pipe-Pretty easy to climb the pipe wall and easy to set an edge in the flats.  Something was missing in that made us say this was excellent but for the most part it's pretty fun.

Jumps- Flat/Rocker boards are hard to get a snappy feel when it comes to springing up from nothing and the indoor survival isn't super springy like the old camber board but it's not completely dead. It's not bad when it comes to hitting a kicker or two but it was missing something here.

All around the indoor survival isn't for everyone but could make a rider that likes the effort and stability of camber but with a little twist of rocker thrown in there.

The Good Ride Take On Flat Camber
Flat Camber is a byproduct of Reverse Camber.  There are many types of Flat Camber with many shapes.  Some have flat camber between the feet and then bend the board up after the bindings.   Some have a nose and tail like a regular board but it just goes completely flat between them.   It has a lot of positive qualities.  One is the ability to float well in powder.  It doesn’t have that leg burn free feeling like rocker but some say it floats and performs better.  It is also very stable at high speeds and doesn’t have the issues that rocker and rocker/camber boards have.  Generally most rocker/camber and pure rocker boards don’t ride well in the flats due to the bend in the center of the board.  The bend can sometimes be the only contact on the snow and that makes the board unstable in the flats and it can be a bit squirly at high speeds or on hard pack snow.  Flat Camber eliminates this issue.  It’s also very fun to jib and is very catch free. The biggest drawback is the lack of pop these boards have.  It is very hard to generate any spring to Ollie.  If pop is important then Flat Camber isn’t for you.  If you like to carve, stay close to the ground and want the same benefits that reverse camber offers in powder this might be a good choice over a cambered snowboard.

The Good Ride Take on Capita and Union
(same parent company)

Union-
Union really lead the charge with the concept of eliminating the dead spot bindings create on snowboards.  Because of that they have some of if not the easiest turn initiation out of any binding we have tried.  The bindings with the Force style base plate really shows this and can make a stiff snowboard turn easier than most bindings out there.  The bindings with the Contact style base plate have a more mellow turn initiation.  The last few years many companies have picked up on this design style and Union isn't alone any more in this category.  Still Union makes some of the best bindings in the industry.  One of the only complaints we have is the buckle on the toe strap is very difficult to undo when it’s cranked down.   We would like to see something like the ankle strap buckle that releases with little effort.  Another complaint is the adjust-ability of their bindings.  You can make some minor tweaks to make the bindings work for you but Union pales in comparison to Burton when it comes to adjust-ability.  If you aren't that into adjusting and want possibly the best turn initiation in the industry the Union's are your choice.

Capita- Capita knows how to make a good sturdy park and all mountain board.  They even have a good Pow board that’s priced appropriately for the amount of times you’ll use it a year.  As you start to look closer in the tech of Capita you can see little issues like some of their boards still have an extruded base instead of a sintered base.  You won't really see this on their high end boards like the Black Death but you will see it on their mid to entry level boards.  Because of this style of production you can sometimes find a Capita snowboard for $100-$200 less than some of their competitors in that class range.   If you are willing to put up with low tech in some places but still receive good performance Capita might be a good choice for you.

Story
At the center of all true chaos and self-destructive debauchery there is always a tortured soul.

The soul wants to leave behind the past, but is imprisoned by so much rage and bitterness. The horror that we see is this contradiction. This tragic and misguided battle between the need for revenge and the desire to escape.

So lost, hurt and confused, like the adolescent mind humiliated by the taunting and scorn of peers, chaos eventually lashes out.

If only there was someone brave enough, with the bottomless compassion necessary to encompass the whole of this fury, to give chaos a brief respite so it can untangle itself from the binds of self doubt, the storm will calm. And a new world will emerge, cleansed, redeemed, and sanctified by sacrifice.

But for now, there is only chaos and its insatiable need to inflict pain.

Capita Indoor Survival FK 2010
Story

In this world, fear cuts deeper than a sword.

But on the Isle of the Damned, fear cuts like a 16 foot tall blender filled to the brim with peyote, nightshade and hawaiian baby woodrose. You try to stay afloat but the rusty, chest high blades whirl and pull you under. They spin not fast enough to slice you cleanly and mercifully, but just fast enough to flay you layer by layer.

In this place there is no survival.
You are conquered. You are devoured.
You are nothing if fear resides in you.
