Hybrid Camber Tapered Directional Shape

What kind of rider will like the Solution? If you are an accomplished freerider that likes speed, big chutes, wide open runs and carving then this will be a very fun board.
The Jones Flagship is from the Mind of Jeremy and then out of the factory at Nidecker.  We are big fans of Nidecker and Jeremy!  Nidecker is one of the best high end freeride snowboard companies out there and Jeremy is one of if not the best freeriders so this is a good match. The Jones Flagship is definitely an evolution of the Rossignol Experience board designed for Jeremy in 2010.  The Flagship is considerably stiffer and feels more like this is what Jeremy rides instead where the Rossignol Experience rode more like a softer production model for the masses. Jones incorporated "Mellow Magnetraction" which is a barely noticeable Magnetraction like extension of the edges throughout the board.  It's nothing like Magnetraction from Lib-Tech and Gnu's.  It's much more mellow and almost barely noticeable.  The top sheet is a bit puzzling because it looks like un-treated wood but they soaked it with some sort of sustainable treatment. Some people like this top sheet and some hate it so it's up to you to decide how you feel about it. Top Sheet or no you can't deny that the Jones is one bomber of a big mountain board.  The  2011 and 2012 boards are not much different.  The ride, feeling and style are very similar.  The one cool difference is they added more sizing. The Good Ride Take

The Jones Flagship Snowboard Review by The Good Ride for 2011 and 2012.

Days- 15
Size-164
Bindings- Union Force SL, Flux SF 45
Boots- Burton SLX, Celsius Opus 6, Nike Kaiju
5'10" 195lbs size 9 shoe, 5'11 160lbs size 10.5 shoe
To start off with the board is different than almost any other board out there with the exception of the Rossignol Experience and the Rossignol Krypto.  All three seem to have the same shape/design. The big difference between the Jones and the Rossignol versions is the camber seems more pronounced with the Rossignol where the Jones seems almost like a flat/rocker board.  The same goes for the Magnetraction for the Experience and Krypto where the Jones is almost un-noticeable.  Another thing is the Jones is much more stiff than the Krypto and Experience.  The first thing that's almost impossible not to notice is how heavy this board is.  The 2012 seems a bit lighter but it's still heavy.  So far it might be the only flaw we have found.  Riding this board gives us a tiny little port hole into the world of Jeremy.  So let's get to the breakdown.

A Quick Look at the Jones Flagship 2012

Groomers- There is Such a huge difference between the Rossignonl Experience Jones model and this model.  The Design is very similar but the stiffness in the nose makes the board soo much fun to ride on groomers. The Experience had such a soft nose that it was very much like having a clown shoe.  The jones isn't as much as a carvy snowboard as it is a straighline everything you see kind of board.
Powder- The Jones has a solid ride in powder and the steeper it is the better it performs.  The bend in the nose after the binding and the small camber makes the Flagship ride bigger than it's size.  It had a somewhat similar ride and kind of similar design to the Capita Charlie Slasher.  The Flagship does have a little camber between the feet and less taper but it has that same plow through anything kind of feeling. It's not as slashy as many powder boards but the float is very much the same.
Turn Initiation-  For a board of this stiffness and size the turn initiation is surprisingly very good.  It doesn't have the edge to edge transitioning of the Gnu C2 BTX Billy Goat but it can turn in just about any tight spot.  It is a little more work in the rutted mogul like crud you can find on the well tracked routes back to the chair but for a stiff heavy 164 it does a good job.  The Flagship is going to shine when it comes to morning groomers and powder runs but if you are looking for a mogul board look elsewhere.
Speed- Even one of the steepest runs at our resort the Flagship felt so stable and damp it just said it's ok to straight line this board anywhere.  The base is pretty fast and the board is chatter free.  The design seems to truly match Jeremy's riding style so much it can make you feel a bit inadequate when trying to mach down a steep run.  There aren't many people that have the ability to take this board to it's limits. Some people feel that the Jones is chattery but that isn't quite correct.  It has problems at slower speeds in super chopped up groomers and hitting hard moguls.  It will pass through that roughness to you.  Here is the thing.  This board should not be ridden in those conditions.  This is for perfect morning groomers and powder. If you are an all day weekend rider who see's chopped up groomers and poor conditions then don't get this board.
Weight- One of the heaviest boards we have recently come across.  We'd really like to see the Flagship do a little weight watchers between now and next season.
Edge Hold- This type of magnetraction makes for very solid edge hold with out changing the characteristics of the ride.  In icy conditions and snowment the Flagship holds an edge very well.
Flex- Really stiff.  It's stiff like the freeride boards of old and this is pretty cool.  It's very hard to bend.
Carving- Really fun to carve in almost any type of condition.  However it's more fun to just go as fast as you can go instead of lean out and carve.  The edge hold also allows for you to carve in just about any condition as well.
Switch- The Jones Flagship is not bad switch for a board of this shape with a little taper.  You can comfortably mix it up and give your back leg a break here and there but it's no twin.
Jumps- Obviously this is great for natural hits but not really that good when it comes to the park.
Pipe- The Flagship will climb a pipe wall well but it's just not built for the pipe.
Rails/Jibbing- No way!

What kind of rider will like the Solution? If you are an accomplished freerider that likes speed, big chutes, wide open runs and carving then this will be a very fun board.

The Good Ride Take On Jones Snowboards
We all know that Jeremy is a legend but many people are always skeptical about a new company.  Jones Snowboards now has a year under its belt and is making pretty good snowboards with the help of Nidecker Manufacturing.  The quality is not as sterling as Nidecker but they still put out a great board that will last for a long time.  We are big fans of their hybrid camber tech and the very mellow magnetraction that they use with their boards. We like that they offer wide boards as well as regulars.  All in all this is a safe buy and one of the best new snowboard companies out there thanks to Team Jones and Nidecker.

The Good Ride Take on Hybrid Camber
For the most part there are two types of hybrid camber that we see out there these days.

1. Mostly Rocker Hybrid Camber
This type of ride, like many boards, has camber and rocker but unlike other rockered boards the center has a mini camber. This is usually 1-3mm high, sits only between the bindings and then curves up right after. From a distance this board looks like a rocker board but when you look closer you see the little camber between the feet. This is not as loose as hybrid rocker but it’s very close. It is very stable between the feet and easy to one foot or flat base in any condition out there. Mostly Rocker Hybrid Camber is very versatile. You will see this design on anything from Freestyle to Freeride style snowboards. This will work well with all ability levels and riding styles.

hybrid-camber

2 Mostly Camber Hybrid Camber
There are all types of designs but this type usually looks like a Camber board and rides much closer to an old school Camber board.  ONe thing you will notice is usually when you step on the board the tip and tail rise up a lot more than a normal camber board will.  Some are mostly camber and others have a bit more rocker but you will always notice they have camber.  This allows for a stable, fast carve friendly feeling you get with camber but also makes it more catch free and floaty in powder.  This doesn't float effortlessly like hybrid rocker, mostly rocker hybrid camber or flat to rocker but it does better than camber.  You will mainly see this on aggressive freestyle to all mountain to freeride style snowboards.

Company Information

Jones Flagship Snowboard  Description 2012

Big mountain freeriding demands both power and agility. The Flagship defines that balance and is the ultimate board for riders who want to shred like a rhino yet leap like a gazelle.

Jeremy Jones and his legion of podium proven freeriders have battle tested the Flagship for unmatched performance from the bulletproof steeps to the powdery runouts . Mellow Magne-traction keeps the Flagship solid on ice, while the blunt nose, directional rocker and camber underfoot deliver the float and stability necessary to bomb any line anytime. The Flagship knows no speed limit and is no doubt one of the most confidence inspiring freeride snowboards ever produced. Step on it and prepare to step up.

Lightweight and lady rippers don't miss the new "L" series Flagship- a 154 cm rocket tuned especially for smaller riders.

Jones Flagship Snowboard  Description 2011

The premier big mountain weapon.

Ideal For speed, stability, stomping airs, charging down the mountain. The apex of 25 years of freeriding experience, rigorous testing, and the latest construction technologies, the Flagship is a battle proven weapon for all-mountain attacks. The Flagship combines Magne-Traction, directional rocker and camber underfoot for the highest overall performance in even the most demanding terrain and conditions.

Directional Rocker

A hybrid rocker/camber flex pattern defined by more tip rocker then tail rocker and slight camber between the bindings. The rockered tip gives the nose added float and improves maneuverability while the camber underfoot gives you added edge hold and response. A slightly rockered tail maintains the power and stability of a traditional board but helps keep the tail catch-free initiating turns and landing switch.

My experience is that most falls in freeriding start from the nose of the board, you either go over the bars in powder, the nose gets caught under a weird crust and tosses you, or you hit a hard tranny at the contact point of the tip and get bucked. Directional Rocker eliminates most of these falls by moving your front contact point closer to your front foot and allowing you to swivel the board side to side without the tip catching on the snow surface. Thanks Shane! (Shane McConkey was the inventor of rocker.)

Blunt Nose

The Flagship, Hovercraft, and the Solution all feature a BLUNT NOSE that extends the profile and width of the board further toward the tip than a traditional board. Increasing the volume of the nose and tapering the tip profile at a much flatter angle than normal improves float by reducing the drag of the nose against the snow.

How a board glides in powder, crust, corn, or any snow condition more then an inch deep is dictated by its front contact point and just past it. Next time you are in soft snow watch how much snow comes over the corner of the nose near the contact point. The billowing snow means you are plowing through it which is obviously slowing you down. By adding a blunt nose you get the float benefits of a much longer board tip without the added length or swing weight.

Mellow Magne-Traction

Like a serrated knife slicing into the snow, Magne-Traction improves your edge grip by adding multiple contact points along the running length of your board. The Flagship, Mountain Twin, and the Solution all feature a refined Magne-Traction design where the bumps are biggest between your bindings for maximum edge control and smaller outside your feet allowing you to feather your turns without catching an edge.

Why trust your life to an edge with only two contact points when Magne-Traction gives you the grip of seven points of contact?! I have gotten to the bottom of countless steep, icy faces and thanked my Magne-Traction for giving me the edge control to hold on. Magne-Traction is also a key ingredient for rockered board designs. Adding rocker to your board makes it glide more smoothly, but it makes it harder to really lock into your turns and hold a solid edge. Though Magne-Traction on full-camber boards tends to feel too locked in, once I started testing different rocker designs it was clear that Magne-Traction was crucial to offset the drift typical of rocker flex patterns.

FSC Wood Core

FSC was established to promote the responsible management of the world's forests. The FSC wood cores come from forests that are managed to meet the social, economic and ecological needs of present and future generations.

Full Wood Core

Poplar core and beech. That gives the board more comfort and is more robust. The real all terrain core.

Wood Topsheet

Wood replaces a traditional plastic topsheet and lacquer to cut down on waste and weight.

Hickory Sidewall

Reclaimed Hickory wood is used for the sidewalls because of it's strength and durability. It is also a more environmentally friendly option then traditional sidewalls.

Sintered Base

Fastest natural base material available. Durable, absorbs wax faster and retains wax longer. Our sintered base added with carbon nano particules as well as additives, creates a better glide. This base is specially developed by Nidecker, and is very resistant to impact.

Recycled Base

P-tex scraps are recycled into new bases.

A- (9 out of 10)

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful
I am not a skulls and graphics dude so the Jones is right in my wheelhouse in terms of classic looks and killer performance. If they are to resolve the top-sheet issue, this could be a "10", A board. For now it is just a "9", A- board due to the top-sheet bio-film quality.

I own a Flagship and I am very pleased by its excellent performance, but at the same time it kinda sucks that Jones Snowboards did not think to provide a more quality seal to the top-sheet. All top-sheets chip and get dinged at the edges when they get hit, but they should all be waterproof.

The bio-film sounds great in theory, but does not provide a high quality seal from moisture. I really appreciate the review by SubHerb1, because treating the board with some Briwax sounds like a great move to ensure the long term durability of the top-sheet, and will hopefully alleviate my top-sheet concern.

I ride hard and fast, and rarely visit the park or pipe. The flagship can slash an excellent carve and is very damp and stable when B-lining the mountain. Excellent in the POW. The board just has a great all-around feeling of control, gives me additional confidence, and is very fast and fun to ride.

Topsheet Treatment for Flagship

6 of 6 people found the following review helpful
Just waxed and conditioned* my brand new Jones Flagship 164.

*By "conditioned", I mean:

I had read the concerns about the topsheet not being sealed and, therefore, potentially absorbing water. (thus causing long-term outer or inner damage)

I am a woodworker (as a hobby, not a profession) and immediately tested the wood for absorption properties. (with water as well as various waxes and sealers) Sure enough, the wood is very absorbent and takes in a fair amount. While I'm sure the wood would be fine untreated .. I am a bit of a perfectionist and I want my board to last a very long time. Therefore, I decided to make the wood somewhat waterproof.

Because I wanted to preserve the matte finish (not shiny) and also didn't want to use a urethane- or epoxy-based product, I decided to use a wax. I settled on 'Briwax'. [link: http://www.briwax.com/briwaxpp.htm ]

I hand-rubbed the wax over the entire surface, starting at the front and working my way back. Be careful to not get wax down in the threaded screw holes.

You can leave the wax as-is(without buffing) OR rub with a terrycloth rag to create a bit of a luster.

Good as gold! Should shed the snow, ice and water like a baby duck's back!! Probably will give it another treatment at the end of the season before I tuck my baby into bed for the reverse-hibernating summer.

Off to Tahoe on Friday. Might even run into Jeremy himself.

Now I need to go get my Mantra's waxed! :-)

Pop-Sick Stick

Great board. Excellent turn initiation, edge hold, and stability at high speeds. If you are a park/ twin guy then this may not be the ticket for you. This board loves the powder, and carves like a dream. I do not see any problem with dampening, but then again, to each his own perception.

The top-sheet is sealed with a thin film, which is a eco-friendly move. I have yet to see the long term durability of the top-sheet, but mine is looookin good.

The Jones Snowboard company is focused on the quality & sustainability of the supply chain used for these boards from sourcing to lean production (reducing waste). Not everyone's cup of tea on the hill, but for those who on a reasonable level appreciate the responsibility aspect of the highly competitive gear game, it does not get any better than this...a great product at a good price.

They should demo these out to people on the hill because everyone asks about it.

Sweet Ride

2 of 2 people found the following review helpful
This is the sweetest ride ever. It is adept at handling all conditions, from ice to bottomless powder. The design elements all make sense, but more importantly, works in reality. It makes quick, short turns in the trees effortless, and is a blast to ride in open terrain. The mellow mag provides a subtle but noticeably increased grip when needed. I have never had any problems with the top sheet except under the bindings where it is stained. No evidence of water absorption or weakness. I have never been happier with a snowboard.
Oops, forgot to mention, the one drawback to the board is that people keep asking me about it in the lines.

A few things most people won't tell you...

8 of 13 people found the following review helpful
Me: 6'2 200lbs, 7 years riding
Big mountain Colorado
Ride FUL boots
Burton Co2 bindings.
Jones flag 164

I put 6 days in on this board at Vail, A basin and Beaver Creek.
It was ridden in pow/chop/groomed/steep/open bowls

THE GOOD:
- Turn initiation is pretty easy and you can get in and out of tight spots with no problem
- You'd think this board is a stiff beast, but it's not. Just past middle of the road(my t6 is stiffer)
- Rides well in powder--this is where the CAMROCK tech really shines, YOu can haul ass on untracked snow with no speed limit.
- The Magnetraction on the Flag is barely visible and gives you about the same edgehold as Burtons PDE.---- Slightly above average
- Base/build of the board is quality-- nidecker. I have ZERO issues with the topsheet.

THE BAD:
- Board is EXTREMELY heavy. In fact, you notice the weight, the minute you pick it up
- My biggest issue is the fact that there is ZERO, if any dampening. You feel every single hit, vibration, chop, crud etc. It's a "rough ride". In comparison, my T6 with it's aluminum core is not the easiest board to ride, but it's smooth as a cadillac in variable conditions compared to the flag. I've ridden alot of decks, and this is the least damp board I've ever ridden.

Conclusion:
If you ride bottomless pow all day---this deck is for you.

I saw DEEPER, met Jeremy and I
REALLY wanted to like this deck but the lack of dampening was the game ender as it's simply not a fun board to ride in variable conditions. I've spoken to few other flag owners who complained of getting "Beat up" at the end of the day in Chop.

Sadly, all the Jones fanboys fail to mention this in their reviews.

I sold mine after 6 days and replaced it with a GNU billy goat as my big mountain deck and it's like night and day.
Gnu:
- Faster edge to edge.
-has better edgehold as it has more aggressive MTX
-is similar stiffness,
- C2 rocker is precise,and slays pow.
- DAMP.(only mervin deck with built in dampeners---it rips thru any terrain like a knife)

Jones is changing the flex on decks next year and adding some carbon and I'm looking forward to trying a mountain twin.

For it's purpose one of the best boards out there!

5 of 6 people found the following review helpful
Board: Flagship 163 wide
Bootsize: US 11
me: 33 years old, height: 5'9 1/2", weight: 140lbs, riding since 18 years, ISIA instructor
days on the board: around 30
This board is fast and can handle the speed. Camber between the bindings gives you a lot of the normal camber-feel back and gets rid of all the squirreliness flatbase on hardpack at "mach 10". No funny nose chatter either, as the nose is a bit stiffer. The mellow magnetraction is noticeable, but doesn't make your turns feel too locked in. Edgehold on this rocker board is fantastic! To make a tight carving turn, you have to know how to do it, as a 9.3m sidecut radius wants to go down the hill and not too much into the turn, which on the other hand is awesome at high speed, as the board doesn't tend to oversteer. The tail is stiff and helps you holding your edge at the end of the turn, also gives you enough pop! Due to a rockered tip and tail the board still turns well in tight spots, such as trees or narrow chutes, but it is a rather stiff board and that requires some work! Powder on this stick is just pure pleasure! Every word Jeremy says about the nose design is true! It floats and floats and floats and cuts through all that crud like a knife. Over all I must say, this board made me feel more confident, as the ride it offers is so incredibly stable and solid.
The topsheet doesn't crack more than any other board's topsheet does - all normal, all okay! I don't know what kind of people always complain about topsheets - you can find those complaints about almost every board out there, and it's stupid! A topsheet is fully exposed to all the little and big hits you (and skiers in the liftline) give it through the day, and yes, it cracks here and there!
Water leaves some little dark spots underneath the bindings, but that is far, far away from soaking up water and: it dries entirely if you let it. This is nothing that could seriously bother me for having a way more environmentally friendly topsheet. All some weird panic in my opinion, as there's no way for the water to make it to the core! Looking at next year's Jones boards it seems like this topsheet hasn't changed, except for some graphics on it. I don't think, Nidecker would keep this construction if there were serious issues.
Enjoy the ride!

The good and the bad

3 of 3 people found the following review helpful
I have 7 days on my Flagship and have not noticed any water issues; however, the top sheet seems to be fragile. Mine is separating/ splintering from the main top sheet at the edges. I have inspected the board and have found no issues (dings gouges etc) that would indicate a cause for the problem. It just doesn’t seem like the best choice for a top sheet and I’m not even sure if the top sheet is cosmetic or functional.

With that said, the board is unbelievable to ride. It is fast, sure footed and a great all-conditions board. I can’t say enough about how well this board performs; unfortunately, I have to make a decision to either cut and run for a more robustly constructed board or stick with this boutique masterpiece.

Bomber!

4 of 4 people found the following review helpful
This is the best board I've ever rode. Can't sink it in the deepest pow, or unsettle it in the worst crud, and it keeps up with everything except my buddy's Burner. What amazes me is the way it handle literally ANYTHING with ease here in JH, boosting my confidence and inspiring me to charge harder than ever.

Regarding the top sheet, I had doubts after I first unwrapped the board and realized it didn't have a top coat. But the local shop owners where I bought it assured me it didn't need any treatment/etc, and they'd already put dozens of days on theirs by the time I took mine out. I've rode it now a good 10 days, in all manner of conditions, including very wet snow during an unseasonable heat wave last week... so far not a single problem with the top sheet, looks good as new.

I would buy this board again in a heartbeat, and for the price, it's a steal... any other name on the board, it would be at least a couple hundred bucks more expensive.

Cheers!

Jones Flagship quality

Can other flagship users comment on the topsheet quality of the board. The comments above look scary. I was willing to buy one but would like to make sure it doesn't absorb water of course.
Thanks

Yes! My flagship topsheet absorbed water after two days of riding. Jones won't even e-mail me back. DO NOT BUY! There are much better built board out there. He used to be my favorite rider- but F*%$ him and his cheap boards.
