Jones Mountain Twin and Jones Mountain Twin Split $449

Intermediate to Expert All Mountain Freestyle
Hybrid Camber Centered Stance Directional Twin shape
The Jones Mountain Twin is from Jeremy's mind and made by Nidecker.  Nidecker and Jeremy both have quite a reputation in the freeride world so this is a good marriage.  The boys from YES and Jeremy have finally proved that Nidecker sucks at US marketing but makes amazing boards.   The combination of camber between the feet and a very mellow  Magnetraction side cut makes the Jones Mountain Twin a fun do anything go anywhere all mountain ride.  Another thing we love about CamRock is that little camber between the feet makes for such a stable ride in all conditions.  Many hybrid rocker snowboards that have rocker in the center have this very loose feel that is super fun but just not as stable flat basing or one footing. That is what we love about the mountain twin is it's like riding a small catch free camber snowboard that floats increadibly well in powder.  There is very little difference between the 2011 and 2012 models.  Jones just seemed to refine what debuted in 2011 and add a few more sizes to the line. On a personal note we like the new design better than the 2011.  Check out the detailed review below.

The Jones Mountain Twin is a pretty fun ride that many of us here at The Good Ride really enjoy. Jones is on fire these days and seems to be one of the hottest new companies out there right now.

Groomers- The Jones Twin is a good all conditions groomer board and works well for a directional twin.  It has many similarities to the YES The Basic  but it's a step up in tech and performance.  The Jones Twin is pretty loose and playful but when you want to step it up and make some more directional groomer riding it does a great job.

Powder- The Jones Twin is not going to have the float that the Yes Big City does but it floats very well for a directional twin without a set back.  There seems to be more rocker in the nose/tail than many other mostly rocker hybrid twins or directional twins with a centered stance out there. Still this is going to be a fun ride in powder.

Turn Initiation/Carving- The Jones Mountain Twin is very fun to make short radius turns.  The hybrid camber under the feet makes for a very lively easy to turn board. If you are new to hybrid camber it will take a bit of getting use to but after a few runs it will be really fun.  When it comes to long radius turns the Jones is almost as fun.  When it comes to carving it's really good for a board that looks like it's almost a continuous rocker board.  It's not going to carve like a camber board but it's pretty close.

Speed- Pretty fast. The Jones Mountain Twin's base is pretty fast and the board is pretty damp.  It's nothing like it's bigger brother the Jones Flagship or it's cousin the Yes Big City but it does a good job with most speed.  There is little to no chatter when you pick up speed either.  This is no freeride board built for speed but it's very good for its shape and riding style.  You can straightline most runs at moderate to high speeds with confidence and the way it rides won't sketch you out.

Weight- The Jones Mountin Twin is not terribly heavy but definitely more on the light side of things.

Edge Hold-  We like the mellow magnetraction that comes with the Jones Snowboards.  Unlike normal Magnetraction this is hardly noticeable unless you look close.  It has much more of a normal snowboard feel and isn't over grippy but when you hit a hard patch it's definitely helpful compared to a board without it. It's like there is a long extension of the edge at the middle of the board and the rest is almost un-noticable.  The more we ride this board the more it feels like the edge hold is good but closer to the excellent side of good.

Flex- This has a medium flex but it still has a very playful buttery feel for how stiff it is. We were impressed with it's ability to flex when you need it on the tip/tail.  We'd say this is almost on the soft side of medium.

Switch- Felt more like a twin than a directional twin when riding switch. We did not notice a difference with the centered stance.

Rails and Jibbing- You can hit rails and go through the jib park but there are many better boards out there than the Jones Mountain Twin.  That's why it isn't called the Jones Park Twin.  Still this does a good job with most small to medium rails and makes for a good board if you occasionally like to hit the jib park.  We'd say this is closer to the average side of good.

Pipe- Soo much fun in the pipe.  The flex is perfect for the pipe.  Not too stiff and not too soft.  There is much more control between the feet, excellent edge hold and a good rocker shape after the bindings to make this a great pipe board.  If you are all about lapping the pipe then the Jones Mountain Twin will do a good job for most riders out there. Well at least it did a great job for us.

Jumps- There is good pop and we found it pretty easy to generate our own air. It was also very easy to pop off natural terrain.  We didn't lap the roller coaster park but felt this could do a great job with just about any size kicker the average to good rider can tackle.

The Jones Mountain Twin didn't out shine any of the other mostly rocker hybrid camber boards we tried but seemed to tie with them in terms of performance.  The one edge it had over the YES boards which ride almost the same was the mellow magnetraction. We like this better than Nidecker's ultimate grip because it doesn't tune away like it does with ultimate grip.  We also had a very loose feel when you were in a slower more playful mood.  So in conclusion this is another excellent board from the Nidecker Umbrella that is Jones Snowboards.

The Good Ride Take On Jones Snowboards
We all know that Jeremy is a legend but many people are always skeptical about a new company.  Jones Snowboards now has a year under its belt and is making pretty good snowboards with the help of Nidecker Manufacturing.  The quality is not as sterling as Nidecker but they still put out a great board that will last for a long time.  We are big fans of their hybrid camber tech and the very mellow magnetraction that they use with their boards. We like that they offer wide boards as well as regulars.  All in all this is a safe buy and one of the best new snowboard companies out there thanks to Team Jones and Nidecker.

The Good Ride Take on Hybrid Camber
For the most part there are two types of hybrid camber that we see out there these days.

1. Mostly Rocker Hybrid Camber
This type of ride, like many boards, has camber and rocker but unlike other rockered boards the center has a mini camber. This is usually 1-3mm high, sits only between the bindings and then curves up right after. From a distance this board looks like a rocker board but when you look closer you see the little camber between the feet. This is not as loose as hybrid rocker but it’s very close. It is very stable between the feet and easy to one foot or flat base in any condition out there. Mostly Rocker Hybrid Camber is very versatile. You will see this design on anything from Freestyle to Freeride style snowboards. This will work well with all ability levels and riding styles.

hybrid-camber

2 Mostly Camber Hybrid Camber
There are all types of designs but this type usually looks like a Camber board and rides much closer to an old school Camber board.  ONe thing you will notice is usually when you step on the board the tip and tail rise up a lot more than a normal camber board will.  Some are mostly camber and others have a bit more rocker but you will always notice they have camber.  This allows for a stable, fast carve friendly feeling you get with camber but also makes it more catch free and floaty in powder.  This doesn't float effortlessly like hybrid rocker, mostly rocker hybrid camber or flat to rocker but it does better than camber.  You will mainly see this on aggressive freestyle to all mountain to freeride style snowboards.

2011 Jones Mountain Twin Company Info

The all-mountain, all-terrain fun board.

Ideal For all-mountain freestyle‚slashing banks, boosting wind lips, rallying ditches, and bouncing down pillow lines. When you feel like rallying the mountain like it's your own personal skate park, strap into the twin profile, directional flex, Mountain Twin. CAMROCK frees up the tip and tail offering extra float in soft snow while camber under foot combined with Mellow Magne-Traction give the Mountain Twin the snap and hold of a traditional board. A progressive free-style shape with a freeride heart, the Mountain Twin is designed for the fall line creativity of Jones team rider like Jonaven Moore.

Mellow Magne-Traction

Like a serrated knife slicing into the snow, Magne-Traction improves your edge grip by adding multiple contact points along the running length of your board. The Flagship, Mountain Twin, and the Solution all feature a refined Magne-Traction design where the bumps are biggest between your bindings for maximum edge control and smaller outside your feet allowing you to feather your turns without catching an edge.

Why trust your life to an edge with only two contact points when Magne-Traction gives you the grip of seven points of contact?! I have gotten to the bottom of countless steep, icy faces and thanked my Magne-Traction for giving me the edge control to hold on. Magne-Traction is also a key ingredient for rockered board designs. Adding rocker to your board makes it glide more smoothly, but it makes it harder to really lock into your turns and hold a solid edge. Though Magne-Traction on full-camber boards tends to feel too locked in, once I started testing different rocker designs it was clear that Magne-Traction was crucial to offset the drift typical of rocker flex patterns.

Camrock

The Mountain Twin features CAMROCK, a unique rocker/camber flex pattern defined by evenly balanced tip and tail rocker and slight camber between the bindings. CAMROCK improves freestyle finesse by keeping your tips playful while maintaining the power and pop of camber underfoot.

Full Wood Core

Poplar core and beech. That gives the board more comfort and is more robust. The real all terrain core.

Film Topsheet

A thin piece of film replaces the traditional plastic topsheet. This eliminates plastic and reduces the weight of the board.

Flip Flop Base

By flip flopping the base graphic colors, P-tex waste is drastically reduced by increasing the material yield.

Sintered Base

Fastest natural base material available. Durable, absorbs wax faster and retains wax longer. Our sintered base added with carbon nano particules as well as additives, creates a better glide. This base is specially developed by Nidecker, and is very resistant to impact.

The review is correct, it is a Directional Twin (NOT a true twin)

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
Eric is wrong. A true twin has BOTH symmetrical shape/stance AND flex. If ONLY ONE of shape/stance and flex is symmetrical (and the other is asymmetrical), it is call a directional twin. This board has a symmetrical shape but asymmetrical flex, so it is a DIRECTIONAL twin.

It's a true twin!!!

1 of 3 people found the following review helpful
I couldn't stand seeing this review describe this board as a directional twin all over the place. It is a true twin shape, directional flex; there is no setback on the inserts and the nose and tail are the same shape. The only difference between the tail and nose is the flexibility. But you can decide which end you want to use as your tail since its a true twin shape!

BTW I have not ridden the board but I have been hearing from many people that this board kicks some serious arse.
