Arbor Coda Snowboard Review

Continuous Rocker Directional Twin Shape
Arbor makes good boards and they are good guys. Like all boards these days the Coda changed from a good camber all mountain board in 2010 to a good all conditions and all mountain rocker snowboard.  In 2011 Arbor adopted the side cut from last years Arbor Draft.  Without brass edges and a soft flex the side cut can do great things. They extended the edge a good bit out at each binding so it holds an edge like MTX from Mervin (lib-tech and gnu) but has a smooth ride like a traditional snowboard.  For 2012 the Coda has pretty much the same design but more pop.  In fact we felt it might be one of the most springy boards we encountered this year. Despite the rocker shape the Coda still holds up pretty well on an aggressive carve.  Check out the Detailed Review below.

The Good Ride Take

The Arbor Coda Review by The Good Ride

Size 161

Days-7
Riders- 6' 180lbs size 10.5, 5'11" 175 size 8.5 shoe, 5'10" 195lbs size 9 shoe, 6' 160lbs size 10 shoe.

Boots- Burton Ion, Burton SLX, Nike Kaiju
Bindings- Burton Cartel RE:Flex and Flux

The Arbor Coda is a very interesting board.  It has the size of a mostly mountain board but acts like a freestyle board.  So this is very interesting to us.   We had a almost every condition and were pretty impressed with the all around freestyle approach you can take to the mountain with the Arboar Coda. Another thing to mention is the little extensions between the feet can now handle a bigger footed rider than before.  It's not a wide footed board but it can handle a size bigger than it use to.

Groomers- The Arbor Coda is a pretty good groomer board but its missing something that would make it a great groomer board.  It seems that the continuous rocker just didn't make it fun to take a higher speed assault on morning groomers.  It didn't have that ultra loose feeling that many continuous rocker boards had but it still was missing something we had on hybrid shapes and camber shapes we have ridden.

Powder- Even though this is a twin with a centered stance the Coda rides very well in the thick sierra cement that we encountered. It's very floaty and great for anyone who likes to ride switch alot in the pow.

Turn Initiation/Carving- The Coda is super easy to turn as are most continuous rocker boards out there.  The 161 turned like it was a 158 and we had a good time making quick edge to edge turns on this.  When it came to carving the Coda was better than many continuous rocker boards but it was still missing something that many hybrid shapes and camber shapes have. Still it was fun to make more mellow short and wide radius turns.

Speed- Bamboo is great for pop but not the best for dampening and keeping a stiff flex.  None of us were impressed with the way it handled higher speeds but none of us were dissapointed.  The Coda has a fast base but it's not damp.  This is borderline average.

Weight- This is just an average weight that isn't too light or too heavy.

Edge Hold-We all felt we never had an issue anywhere on the mountain where we felt like the Coda needed more grip.  It has the edge hold of a magnetraction board but a less grippy feel that is good even in thick sticky snow.  We all were very impressed at how this soft board could hold just about anywhere.

Flex- Arbor says this is a medium flex but to us it felt pretty soft and playful.  This isn't a bad thing but it's a bit of a suprise when you get it on the mountain and it's very flexy.

Switch- Even though this is a directional twin we didn't notice any difference riding either direction.

Rails/Jibbing- This was a lot more fun than we expected in the jib park and we had a pretty good time there.  It's not very hookey and it's soft flex could handle almost any terrain out there.

Pipe- The Coda held an edge very well and was very forgiving.  We spent a lot of time in the pipe with the Coda and had a pretty good time despite the fact we were riding a rather big 161.  We had a lot more fun on the  Arbor Westmark but it's not bad.

Jumps- Ok the Arbor Coda is one springy board.  It's possibly the most springy board we tried.  When we switched from the Coda to any other board we thought the new board was dead at first compared to the Coda.  You just had way more ollie power with the Coda and this was by far our favorite part about this flexy/springy board.  Maybe it's the Bamboo or a combination of the Bamboo and other tech but what ever it is we really liked it.  Hitting Kickers was really fun as well the Coda is forgiving and very playful in a spin.  If you are all about hitting natural jumps all over the mountain the Coda is ideal.  If you like lapping the park roller coasters this is great too.  The bottom line is the Coda will help you do more when it comes to jumping in and out of the park. This was just as if not more springy as any set up out there.  Very cool!

All in all the Coda is a very fun board but we felt it was more of an all mountain freestyle to freestyle board compared to the all mountain label Arbor gave it.  It could use some work on speed or carving but not at the price of the pop that this board has. This is a fun board for anyone who likes to get air.

The Good Ride Take on Continuous Rocker
This is where it all started or re-started in the Mid 2000’s. In the beginning Continuous Rocker was mainly for park and powder. Today it's still pretty much made for the same 2 functions. There are a few boards that are made for all mountain to freeride use but most of those have migrated to hybrid shapes.  Continuous Rocker helps you maintain a catch free forgiving ride which is excellent for beginner riders or those who ride at slower playful speeds through the park.  Almost every one we have tried has to be on edge or it will wander giving you that squirrely feeling like a skateboard with loose trucks.  The biggest issue is it isn't very stable flat basing or one footing in firmer snow.  Continuous rocker is for the most part really poppy and helps you generate your own air.  There are many styles of this shape so this could be a good choice for beginners, park rats and people who only ride powder.

THE ARBOR SYSTEM

A FUSION OF INTERDEPENDENT TECHNOLOGIES THAT SUPPORT TRUE-ROCKER PERFORMANCE
Arbor offers The System to provide riders with an amazing amount of edge hold in a rocker design that preserves the full range of performance associated with true-rocker shapes. We did this by perfecting the true-rocker profile (Parabolic Rocker), while building in real edge control through a unique sidecut (Grip Tech).  In our opinion, the award winning “System” has proven to be the best rocker design yet offered.
This design is built on the Mountain System, which utilizes a flex and shape that are specifically tuned to freeriding and all-mountain riding.

OTHER FEATURES & TECHNOLOGY
THE TOPSHEET
POWER PLY - Arbor’s bamboo Power Ply works like a 3rd layer of fiberglass. During construction resin locks the Power Ply's dense natural fibers in place, creating a composite layer that structurally enhances a board for added return and improved durability.  Our Power Ply technology allows us to reduce our overall reliance on chemically treated fiberglass and petroleum-based resin by up to 20%, which also provides important weight reduction.  Arbor’s bamboo Power Plys is made from real bamboo, which is the most renewable, sustainably grown building material available today.  Bamboo also delivers that clean, Zen flavor.
BIO-FILM - Every board in the Arbor line is built with an ultra thin protective top foil made using 30% caster bean based bio-plastic.  This top sheet protects the board from damage caused by loose bindings, out-of-control skiers, or other unforeseen impacts.  Its natural glossy nature also eliminates the need for environmentally harmful clear coats.
THE CORE
MYSTIC 2 CORE - Our most bomber core for more aggressive big-mountain riding, built using FSC certified, sustainably produced poplar and reinforced with bamboo along the rails for significantly improved initiation and durability.  Bamboo is one of the strongest materials on the planet.  It has 40 times the effective life of carbon fiber and provides 60% more return than traditional core materials.  Bamboo’s tensile strength and weight-to-strength ratio are superior to steel; yet bamboo is light, flexible, and resistant to compression.
SHADOW FLEX - A slight tapered thinning of the core profile between the bindings, improves: turn and spin initiation; tracking in mixed conditions, on the flats, and during landings; and performance on rails, boxes, and jibs.
THE BASE
ROCKET BASE - A higher molecular weight, wax-infused sintered base that provides unmatched durability and speed.
THE SIDECUT
UNBLENDED PROGRESSIVE - Arbor’s unblended tri-radial sidecut technology; better known as “Grip-Tech.”  Please see “The System” Section for more details.
THE SIDEWALLS
RHYTHM RAILS - Made from an advanced blend of ABS and urethane; delivers durability, a clean, acoustically damp ride, and solid edge performance.
THE GLASS
MIXED GLASSING - A triax over biax lay-up that’s best for versatile on-mountain and park riding.
THE INSERTS
2X4 14-PACKS - Provides both a wide stance range and amazing micro adjustability; used here to create Arbor’s Mountain Stance, which has a max stance of 24.4"/62cm
THE EDGES
RECYCLED STEEL - Built with hardened steel edges made using 60% recycled steel; provided maximum edge performance.
WARRANTY
TWO-YEAR - Every board in the Arbor line comes with a two-year warranty on material and workmanship.  We stand by everything we make.

THE MOUNTAIN SYSTEM

A FUSION OF INTERDEPENDENT TECHNOLOGIES THAT SUPPORT SUCCESSFUL ROCKER PERFORMANCE

Make no mistake, rocker represents a completely different approach to snowboard design.  It requires a total rethink of long held ideas of how flex, materials, and shape interact and affect performance.  In response, Arbor developed The System to address the new physics of riding rocker.  In our opinion, the award winning “System” has proven itself to be the best rocker design yet offered.

Coda kills it

0 of 0 people found the following review helpful
I have the 2009 Coda before they added rocker so its A camber board. Size 155 great at high speed very little chatter directional 3/4" set back great in the park, best for high speed turns and also good in the trees a little stiff, but all mountain boards should be. My only complaint is that the top sheet is very prone to chipping unlike my other Never Summer Sl
