Camber Directional Twin

A Good Ride Favorite! This is not for everyone but for some this could be a dream.
Its soo hard to find a stiff twin and even more difficult to find a twin so we are sad to see this board go.  Rome knows what they are doing and should not be ignored when considering a good board. The companies principle invented the Burton Custom so they know what they are doing.  This is like a very light directional twin version of the 2010 Rome Anthem. It is fast stiff board for those who like to ride regular or switch on the groomers. It was hard to find something we didn't like about the Design.  Our only complaint was the attempt to be ultralight made the top sheet a little less sturdy compared to other boards and easy to scratch/ding.  Check the Detailed review below

The Good Ride Take

The Rome Design Snowboard Review by The Good Ride

Board Used- 162
Riders On it- 3
Bindings Used- Burton Co2's

Days on this board- 21

All in all we were very impressed by this light very fast snowboard.  We feel the Rome Design and the Salomon Special are the 2 best super aggressive all, mountain Directional Twin shape boards you can get your hands on.  This board is very lively and responsive for being so stiff.  This is probably the best Directional Twin you can pick for high speed mountain assaults.  If this had the edge hold that Salomon Special did we would declare this the tops.  We haven't had this much fun on groomers with a board like this for years or maybe ever.  This is not for beginners or even intermediate riders.  This is a fast technical board made for people who like to go big or people like us who just appreciate turning a good board regular or switch and occasionally want a chatter free straight line.

Groomers- This board owns groomers! It is great in just about any type of condition. It makes you want to get up early to enjoy the corduroy. Steep or flat this board has a very stable carvy feel.
Powder- This is pretty big for a directional twin going up to a 165 and is about as good as a cambered twin can be in powder. Its very fast base really helps keep speed in un-tracked pow.
Speed- This board is Fast and chatter free! Its the kind of board that doesn't ever have a sketchy speed moment. The board will never get weird on you. The only thing that will get weird is your head if you straight line and crash. This and the Salomon Special are our favorite directional Twins for speed.   They take that freeride feeling and put it in a twin.
Lightweight- This board is arguably the lightest board on the market. If your into light this is what all other boards should be rated by. If you pair this up with some light bindings you will almost feel like you forgot to put on your board when your on the chair.  The one problem we noticed is that Rome sacrifices a little sturdiness to make it soo light.  After many days and little taps against other snowboards in line and normal wear and tear we noticed it had lots of little nicks.
Turn Initiation- This board has that Custom X type of feel where it seems to want to help you initiate your next turn. We like this board better because it's lighter and a twin so its more fun to ride switch. Due to it's stiffness It takes a little weight transfer to make it happen but we really like that.
Edge Hold- Good enough to climb a big pipe wall and does its job in terms of creating a feeling of stability in almost any terrain. Unless your on ice you should never wash out laying a deep carve even on hard pack.
Stiffness- This board is really stiff for a directional twin. Most of the time they make directional boards this stiff so this is a unique find! This ain' t no jib board. It's made to handle someone who wants to haul ass regular or switch.
Switch- Almost perfect switch! It almost feels like a true twin. The centered stance is also nice. It seems these days that directional twin is used liberally and some can ride more like a twinish board than a directional twin.
Pipe- Its fun to have a stiff twin that can climb a pipe wall with ease. Its a friend of the pipe as long as the edges stay sharp. This is a bigger twin but if you size down it will perform really well in the pipe.
Jibbing/Rails/Boxes- Not jibtastic but will allow a little bit of jib freedom. Don't get this board if you want to hit the jib park all the time.  It probably shouldn't see a rail in it's life time.  It's sharp edges and delicate construction is just not really made for that.
Jumps- This board is made to jump in powder and hitting a big park kicker won't be too much of a problem either. Its made to go big.  In an attempt to keep snowboarding in to old age we haven't been hitting big kickers any more but we are pretty sure you will be happy hitting the 70 foot kicker at your local park.

All in all we were really impressed with the Rome Design and although we miss it at least the Salomon Special is still around.

The Good Ride Take on Rome
Rome is relatively new but has some of the best people in the industry working there.  For example the designer of the Burton custom is now a principle and designer at Rome.  Their strong point is that they make exceptional park and all mountain snowboards.  They make boots and bindings that are loved or hated but don’t have the rep that their boards have.  From what we have experienced with their clothing its well made, fits well and the waterproofing isn’t bad for the price.   Their gloves are hit or miss and don’t really have the rep that their clothing does.  They have exceptional customer service and everyone at Rome seems to really love what they are doing so if you have an issue it will most likely be handled professionally.   Rome hasn’t really been leading the innovation charge the last few years but almost everything they make is well thought out and fun to use.   Rome has the average to 100+ day freestyle to all mountain rider dialed out.

RIP THE WHITE WAVE

In the ‘60s, counter-culturists like the Merry Pranksters experimented with all kinds of mind-altering substances in an effort to attain a state of enlightenment. Roughly 40 years on, the SDS, having spent many years experimenting with various insanely light materials like pure carbon laminates and strategically placed bamboo, has arrived at an enlightenment enabler of its own—the high-tech Design. This time instead of popping a pill that could leave you drooling in a cup the rest of your life, you strap into the world’s lightest board and pull into a tube on the Design.
