The Good Ride TakeThe Good Ride Take on Burton Burton is huge. They have developed or acquired most of the technology that we use today. Burton is one of the only companies that can provide you with everything you need to snowboard from boards to beanies. Burton even owns arguably the best surfboard company Channel Islands because Jake likes to surf. They are like the Yankees of snowboarding because they can always outspend their competition to win. The positives- Burton provides more products for each gear/clothing/accessory category than any other company. Burton has possibly the best customer service in the snowboarding industry. Burton continuously spends more money than almost any company to develop new tech or just make what they have better. Burton sponsors more pro’s and get’s more high level user feed back than any other company. They have some of the best boots, bindings and boards in the industry. They also have great clothing. The bottom line is Burton is the 800lb patriarch of our industry that makes good stuff and backs it up with good customer service. The snowboarding world owes soo much to them but at the same time they can be very frustrating when it comes to price and proprietary technology.

Speed and float are your friends, and that’s what S-Rocker is all about. Entry rocker extends from the nose to under your front foot, then transitions to camber between your feet. Compressing the camber causes the entry rocker to naturally lift the nose, thus improving float while maintaining momentum and stability through deep-driving pow turns and variable conditions. ![]() 2010 The Burton Fish Never too deep. The Good Ride Take on Rocker/Reverse Camber - At first rocker tech was mainly for the park and powder. Now we are seeing many different riding styles of reverse camber and it's slowly establishing itself outside of the park as a viable all mountain solution. This was re-vitalized mainly by Mervin (Lib-Tech, Gnu & Roxy) and K2 also put out a board at the same time. This change in technology really makes it an exciting time for the sport of Snowboarding. We are seeing all types of technology out there but so far there are 2 predominant themes:
1. Pure Rocker where the board slowly curves up from the center.
2. Rocker and Camber where there is either a mini camber in the center or the board or the tail and nose bends back down. Everything seems to be trending toward this type of design over straight camber.
The Positives
Reverse Camber helps you maintain a catch free forgiving ride which is excellent for beginner and Intermediate riders. It’s also great for people who want to work on their game. It rides excellent in Powder and floats better than almost any cambered board. It helps you out of those situations where you could bog down. It is also incredibly fun to jib around on and hit rails/boxes. Some love reverse camber (especially rocker/camber) in the pipe and on jumps. So far the rocker/camber combo’s seem to be winning out over straight rocker. It provides more stability and is working its way into an all mountain ride.
The Negatives
the biggest issue we see is they are not very stable in the flats. The Rocker/Camber combo’s do a lot better than the Pure Rocker boards but they still don’t track very well compared to a cambered board. Almost every one we tried has to be on edge or it will wander. The only ones that didn't had a mini camber between the feet and those were our favorite. When you straight line a reverse camber board and get it up to high speeds it feels less stable than a cambered board. Some rocker/camber boards are getting very close but if you are about speed then a cambered board is the better choice. When it comes to pop the cambered board still wins out.
Is Camber dead?
In our opinion no way. There is still a purpose for camber right now and many at the good ride still love camber for groomer and hard pack days. Reverse Camber is not for everyone yet but this year almost every company has a rocker/reverse camber. Some companies don’t even offer a cambered board any more. It is our suggestion to go ride a few and form your own opinion. You might find a quiver board or even your primary board. We aren't sure on how reverse camber will play out but we feel that the next few years it will continue to evolve. We will say that we are riding in new ways and styles that continue to make this sport progress. We thank K2 and especially Mervin (Lib-Tech, Gnu and Roxy) for reintroducing functional rocker to our world! The creativity of the snowboard world has even lead to skiers copying us again!
