Arbor A-Frame Snowboard Review

Arbor A-Frame $699

Advanced to Expert Freeride
The Arbor A-Frame is the closest you can get to making a euro carve without buying hard boots.  A long narrow waisted fast tight turning all around fun freeride board like this is hard to find. This is a direct competitor to the Nidecker Platinum and Elan Vertigo.  All three are made for hauling ass and locking into a hard carving turn.  Just because its big don't think its a powder board.  It will do better than most non tapered boards and make the majority of riders very happy but there are other boards out there that do a better job.  The Arbor A-Frame will still float much better than most boards of it's shape due to its size.  The fun part of the A-Frame is going fast and making high speed carves on well groomed runs.  Out of the Platinum and Vertigo we feel the Arbor A Frame is the most forgiving ride.  It's the perfect board for expert riders who want to have speed and control and good for advanced riders trying to really understand speed and hard carving. Very little has changed between the 2011 Arbor A-Frame and 2012 Arbor A-Frame models we rode and we weren't sure we could tell you which was which if you covered the top with tape.  Check out the detailed review below.

There are only a few other long but narrow wasted boards like the Arbor A-Frame out there you can ride.  If you live for  high speed carves on morning groomers but find yourself on the hill when it’s all rutted up the A-Frame is going to be the choice in this category.

Groomers- The A-Frame is all about well groomed runs.  It has the ability to handle just about any condition you want to go out in and can make a great board for the freerider that loves to carve. The good thing about the A-Frame is that it can handle chopped up groomers a lot better than most boards in its class and riding style.  We are not saying it’s going to be easy but it will be easier than some.

Powder- The A-Frame is no powder board but it’s sheer size and set back keep it afloat even in the deep stuff.   Most of us at The Good Ride enjoy something with rocker or hybrid camber in powder but it still floats well for a camber board.

Turn Initiation/Carving- This is not easy to throw around but we have to say that this does a great job for its size.  The 166 we had is a big board but it would be hard to make this board turn any easier.  We wanted the 170 because if you riding a big board you might as well ride the fastest and biggest.   If you compare this to other stiff camber boards in its class and size it turns the easiest.  If you compare this to hybrid rocker or hybrid camber boards out of its class it is more difficult.  We had a lot of fun making deep carves on fresh morning groomers and felt this is what the A-Frame is made to do.   It really springs out of a turn and helps you build speed into the next turn while still maintaining control.  All in all this board did its job very well and we liked the way it rode.   It was not easy but much easier than any board of this size we rode to make tight turns in rutted or mogul conditions.

Speed- The A-Frame is fast but probably not the fastest board in its class.  We went out with the Nidecker Platinum 168 and the A-Frame could not keep up.  However we liked more the all condition balance that the A-Frame had compared to the Platinum.  The Platinum is only good when the conditions are perfect and then you have to put it away.  The A-Frame you can keep around after things get a little rough.  So for speed the A-Frame is really fast compared to many boards but not the fastest in its class.  If you are into boarder cross then this will do well but might not be the best choice.

Weight- The A-Frame is pretty light for a big board so we would call it medium.  Its weight didn't overwhelm you on the chair and it never felt like a burden on some of our longer chair rides.

Edge Hold- We never felt the edge on the A-Frame give out and we rode this in all conditions except for ice.   A carving board should have a lot of grip and the A-Frame does a great job here.

Flex- This is a stiff flex but it’s more on the medium side of stiff.  The A-Frame is a lot easier to bend and twist than many other boards in its category.

Switch- There wasn't much switch riding but when we did it wasn't bad for a big directional board with a decent set back.

Rails/Jibbing- Don’t bother

Jumps- Not bad off a natural kicker but it’s more for a method than a 540.

Pipe- The A-Frame has the edge hold to climb any pipe wall but it’s a big board so everything else isn't so great.

All in all we found this to be a very fun semi-aggressive carving/freeride board.  All who tried it liked it and no one had any complaints.  If you like to keep your board transitioning from one carve to another on wide open groomer runs then the Arbor A-Frame is great choice.

THE TOPSHEET

POWER PLY - The A-Frame\'s inlaid wood Power Ply works like a 3rd layer of fiberglass. During construction resin locks the Power Ply\'s dense natural fibers in place, creating a composite layer that structurally enhances the board for added return and improved durability.  Our Power Ply technology allows us to reduce our overall reliance on chemically treated fiberglass and petroleum-based resin by up to 20%, which also provides important weight reduction.  All of our wood Power Plys are produced using a range of sustainably sourced, natural wood veneers. The variance of real wood grain creates a one-of-a-kind look on each board made with this technology.

BIO-FILM - Every board in the Arbor line is built with an ultra thin protective top foil made using 30% caster bean based bio-plastic.  This top sheet protects the board from damage caused by loose bindings, out-of-control skiers, or other unforeseen impacts.  Its natural glossy nature also eliminates the need for environmentally harmful clear coats.

THE CORE

SHAMAN CORE - Our lightest, most tech core; designed for high-end mountain or park riding; built with a 50/50 blend of Paulownia and Poplar woods.  Paulownia is a highly renewable, balsa-like species that delivers ultra lightweight performance.  Unlike Balsa, Paulownia wood’s tensile strength is similar to traditional wood core materials, which allows us to deliver maximum weight reduction, without reducing durability.  FSC certified, sustainably sourced Poplar is then added to provide more compression strength.

SHADOW FLEX - A slight tapered thinning of the core profile between the bindings, improves: turn and spin initiation; tracking in mixed conditions, on the flats, and during landings; and performance on rails, boxes, and jibs.

THE BASE

ROCKET BASE - A higher molecular weight, wax-infused sintered base that provides unmatched durability and speed.

THE SIDECUT

STANDARD PROGRESSIVE - A blended tri-radial sidecut design that provides tighter turning and quicker initiation, while maintaining stability at speed, when flat boarding, and during landings

THE SIDEWALLS

POWER RAILS - Made from environmentally friendly bamboo, delivers amazing landing and impact durability, unmatched edge performance, and powerful return off your rails.

THE GLASS

HI-LOAD GLASSING - A triax over triax lay-up that is ideal for on-edge performance: steeps, carving, speed, and pipe

THE INSERTS

2X4 14-PACKS - Provides both a wide stance range and amazing micro adjustability; used here to create Arbor’s Mountain Stance, which has a max stance of 24.4\"/62cm

THE EDGES

RECYCLED STEEL - Built with hardened steel edges made using 60% recycled steel; provided maximum edge performance.

REINFORCING

CARBON TORSION A-FRAMES - Running carbon fiber out to the contact points from the inserts creates structural a-frames that increase the torsional flex as you move out toward the tip and tail.  This increases on-edge performance without negatively affecting turn initiation - designed for carve-oriented, at speed, and in-the-steeps performance.

WARRANTY

TWO-YEAR - Every board in the Arbor line comes with a two-year warranty on material and workmanship.  We stand by everything we make.

Rocket Base

An advanced, ultra-high molecular weight sintered compound that provides unmatched durability, wax absorption, and speed.

Shaman Core

Our lightest core, designed for on-mountain and park riding, built with a 50/50 blend of ultra lightweight paulownia wood and poplar for added compression strength.

Progressive - Standard

Durafilm

An ultra thin layer of nylon that tops our full length wood and bamboo topsheets to protect them from damage caused by loose bindings or out-of-control skiers.

Protecting the planet is about the environments we utilize everyday. We need clean air to skate, clean water to surf, and snow to ride.

STRUCTURAL WOOD TOPSHEET - Works like a 3rd layer of fiberglass - during construction resin locks the dense wood fibers in place, creating a composite layer that structurally enhances a board, providing added return and durability, while allowing for important weight reduction.

FSC CERTIFIED WOOD CORES - All of Arbor’s wood cores are made with poplar that has been certified by the Forest Stewardship Council as sustainably produced.  Poplar is still the best choice as a primary wood core material due to its combination of lighter-weight performance, durability, and availability.

PAULOWNIA WEIGHT REDUCTION - Paulownia is a fast growing, plantation-cultivated wood species that we use as an ultra-lightweight, balsa-like core additive.  Unlike balsa, Paulownia’s tensile strength is similar to traditional wood core materials, which allows us to deliver maximum weight reduction, without reducing durability.

Arbor A-Frame: My Freeride Dream

1 of 1 people found the following review helpful
From the outset, I loved Arbor's look, and knew I wanted to go with either the Element or the A-Frame. I eventually decided on the A-Frame because it was more of a freeride board, perfect for my riding style.

The first thing I noticed was the stability of the board - this board made me feel invincible. The guys here at thegoodride described this board as very damp and stable at high speeds, perfect for riding groomers whether they've been chopped or freshly groomed. This statement fits the A-Frame perfectly.

What I enjoyed most about this board was its carving ability. I was able to rocket down a steep run with amazing speed and stability while laying down long hard carves.

I would recommend this board to any freerider out there, you won't be disappointed!
