Rome Vinyl Snowboard Review

vynl-148
$370
Intermediate to Expert All Mountain to Freestyle
Camber Twin Like Directional Shape
The Vinyl is very much like the Burton Feelgood but it's not a copy.  It's a long story but the Feelgood is a female version of the Burton Custom.  The burton custom was created by one of the owners of Rome.  So if you want something that rides as good or better than the feelgood but don't want to pay a ton of money hello Vinyl!  For 2011 the Rome Vinyl has added some new tech.  Most of it will add subtle advantages to the pop but there won't be a terribly huge difference between 2010 and 2011.  With Union Trilogy bindings  or the Rome Madison bindings the Vinyl will flex very similar to the channel tech that Burton offers.  For 2012 not much has changed with the Vynl except for there is an upgrade to the pop tech that helps a bit with the springy feel but the ride is pretty much the same.  Check out the detailed review below.

The Good Ride Take

The Rome Vinyl Snowboard Review by The Good Ride

When trying this board we already knew how great this board would be so we weren't that surprised when it lived up to our expectations.   This is right up there at the pinnacle of all mountain boards.  If you can only afford one board to do everything then this is a good choice.  This board will do everything well but nothing great.  That being said most boards in this do everything category do everything ok and nothing great so the Vinyl is very close or is best in class.  We had no surprises and no disappointments.  It's a fast mid flexing stable board that is built very well.   We would pick this over the Burton Feelgood any day for a few reasons.  1 is the price and 2 is that you can use any binding with this board.  Burton's channel system keeps you imprisoned to only burton bindings which is a huge shame.  There are many great bindings out there that aren't made by burton that will match up really well with the Rome Vinyl so it's good not to pigeon hole yourself in to a 1 binding brand board.

A quick look at the 2012 Rome Vinyl

Groomers- Let's face it.  Most people spend most of their time on groomers so this is a very important category.  This cambered board is fun and fast on morning groomers. As it gets chewed up it's still forgiving on bumpy terrain. We liked the ride and felt this might be its' best category.

Powder- With a twinish shape and not much set back this board is not going to blow your mind in the deep stuff but it’s exactly what you would expect for a cambered board.  It will be fun until it gets really deep.

Turn Initiation- It's easy to turn for a mid flexing board.  It makes big carving turns fun but if you need to make a quick turn in a jam it will be very responsive.  This is not for a beginner but will take a little while to get use to if you are an intermediate.  Advanced to Expert riders will appreciate this board immediately and enjoy its ability to turn.

Speed- There is a fast base, mid flexing and very damp.  You can straight line this thing without issues.  It’s not going to have the stability of the Rome Anthem or Rome Design but it sure is fast for its category.

Lightweight- It’s pretty heavy but you can see why if you examine it closely.  The rails have a lot more steel and the board is thicker. It's built to last a long time and judging by the extra everything on the board you can ride these 100+ days a year for a many seasons before it gives up on you.

Edge Hold- This board will climb a steep icy pipe wall but it won't be the best board on an icy day.  Ice sucks but if it's something you have to face all the time look for a different board.  If you ride in mainly good conditions like we do then this board handles most situations we deal with.

Stiffness-
This is on the stiffer side of mid flexing which makes for a good all mountain board.

Jibbing-  This board is fun to jib.  It’s going to do just fine in the park but isn't the best choice if this is your favorite part of the board.

Switch- We thought this board would not be as much fun to ride switch as most boards of this shape but it did a very good job.  If you ride switch on occasion you won't be disappointed.  If you ride switch a lot then look for a twin or directional twin.

Rails and Boxes- Great for a visit but you don't want this as your street specialist.  Its sturdy and slides well but the flex isn’t going to be as forgiving as some boards if you are getting into the more challenging boxes/rails then it will not please you.

Pipe- This is fun in the pipe! It climbs the wall well and has enough flex to land a less than perfect hit.  We felt that there are other boards that really did a better job than this board but again this to try and learn everything instead of excel in one.

Jumps- Go big or small and this board will be there for you.

The Good Ride Take on Rome
Rome is relatively new but has some of the best people in the industry working there.  For example the designer of the Burton custom is now a principle and designer at Rome.  Their strong point is that they make exceptional park and all mountain snowboards.  They make boots and bindings that are loved or hated but don’t have the rep that their boards have.  From what we have experienced with their clothing its well made, fits well and the waterproofing isn’t bad for the price.   Their gloves are hit or miss and don’t really have the rep that their clothing does.  They have exceptional customer service and everyone at Rome seems to really love what they are doing so if you have an issue it will most likely be handled professionally.   Rome hasn’t really been leading the innovation charge the last few years but almost everything they make is well thought out and fun to use.   Rome has the average to 100+ day freestyle to all mountain rider dialed out.

BECAUSE IT ALL FEELS SO GOOD

The most versatile model in the women’s collection, the Vinyl is that board that is equally at home busting clean, rhythmic turns as it is spinning a backside 360 in the park. With its mellow flex pattern, it has always been a team favorite from peak to park. If you’re looking for a board that can put out pleasure on all sides of the mountain, the Vinyl is your deck. Carbon down the centerline adds a touch of pop in 2011.

PURE PLATINUM FOR PARK HITS AND POW SLASHES

The Vinyl is like that album you can’t get enough of: slightly poppy for park laps, edgy for carving but not too edgy for jibbing, and revolutionary in the way it rips freeride conditions. No matter how many times you ride it each season, in rain or shine, on ledges or park booters, on groomers or in deep powder, it’ll always turn that frown upside down.
